I PM'd some questions about the pending WA site to St Thomas a while ago, but I assume Aimoo lost it. So, I'll throw these out to the group. Since it's the 3rd WA anniversary, I'd really like to see a permanent website up and busy before the end of the year. (Hopefully sooner than that, but I'd settle for end of the year.) Is there a desire to move the forum away from Aimoo and to our own site/server? Aimoo is very unstable and does not keep older posts even when it is stable. Hosting the forum will require more work on our parts, but would certainly mean future stability and greater control over WA's future. Is there already a WA or WA-related domain name under St Thomas's/WA's control? If not, I found a few that will work. I will be happy to provide my findings to St. Thomas via PM, as I don't want any lurking domain name squatters to get it. What type of site is it that we're moving towards? - One like the old WA site hosted at ifas.org - very simple site, several articles and links, rarely updated. (also much like losingmyreligion.com and several others) - One like the current Aimoo site - forum only, with content generated by users/members only, content changes frequently. - One like newsforge.com - news/articles only site, updated frequently, content generated by users and news feeds, no forum. - A combination of the old WA site and Aimoo - articles and forum closely connected, frequently updated content, possible news feeds, etc. What are the needs and functions of the site? What do we know will be absolutely necessary? What's our want list? Our fanciful pie-in-the-sky wish list? (i.e., newsletters, news feeds, press releases, etc.) This site could become very popular. Let's go into this knowing that it could become a huge target for proslytizing. Especially if the forum and site are combined. I'm not saying that the forum/site combo is a bad idea. In fact, I think it's the best route. I just think we should be ready for the influx of fundies out to save us. I do have the articles from the ifas.org site saved on my hard drive. Not sure how we'll get permission to post them. Probably have to track down each individual author. Any other ideas or questions floating around out there?

Hey, Brake, good to hear from you.  This is my first day back from a 4 week vacation and I'm just now looking at the forum.  Thanks for your input.  YES yes, and yes, I would like to start a companion site for our WA Aimoo forum.  I see it at least initially as you stated: "A combination of the old WA site and Aimoo - articles and forum closely connected, frequently updated content, possible news feeds, etc."

I actually started a draft of a site awhile back.  I'll try to find it and send you the URL or a copy.  Please PM me with all the data you have found on a possible host for a site.  I am willing to initially host it on my space on my University's server, but it would have to be temporary -for a  period of time as yet unknown (i.e until someone in administration decides they won't let me do it anymore)

I am ready to make this happen - asap - hopefully by the end of the summer at least.  I'm standing by for your info.

Hi

My computer just died.  I won't be able to replace it until next month, but when I do, I am back in the game.  I had still been developing the links page.  It's on my inaccessible hard drive, but am pretty sure I can recover it.

Just letting you know I haven't abandoned the project!

Lauren

Hi, foxmaiden.  Sorry about your computer.  Brake is sending me some data on a possible host for our web site.  Hopefully, by the end of this summer we will have a web site up (maybe before).  Let me know when you recover your data and we shall incorporate it into our plans for the site.  I'll post back to this thread when we have something together or something to see or evaluate.

Anyone else out there who wants to help or contribute should post to this thread.  I'd like to get together a planning group for this site asap.  Thanks.

I did post the link page here

http://www.laurenlewis.com/WA%20links.html

so we have that to start with.  I had done more work on it since then.  Pretty sure I will be getting a new computer in August and I will check the old hard drive then.

Thanks for the re-link, foxmaiden.  I do remember your stuff now.  You have created some great content.  The dummy site (with no content other than brief explanations) that I created is here: http://www.cofc.edu/~seay/walkaway

As all can see, foxmaiden has taken her rich content site and integrated her design into mine (actually by sticking her content to the right of my navigation bar).    We would appreciate some feedback on a design.  I am a "break things up into many more smaller pages" guy - as opposed to one long page.  Seems to make navigation a bit easier.

The first step, seems to me, is to decide on the catagories or how to divide up our site.  Both foxmaided and myself have had a go at dividing things up.  Foxmaiden has come up with more divisions than me.  Perhaps there is a combination of these two that will work.  Or perhaps there is something completely different that someone out there can come up with.  I like to keep the initial navigation bar relatively simple and subdivide it for each section.  But, hey, thats just me.

Any web designers out there who wish to join our design team, let us know on this thread.  So far, our team consists of foxmaiden, brake the poet, and myself.  I'll post a URL for a redesign of an another idea shortly.

Foxmaiden, I've just been looking at your site design again, and the more I see it, the more I like it.  You and I have come up with two different approaches to the material.  Me, being the librarian that I am, have divided stuff into material and communication type (articles, books, introduction, forum, etc).  You, however, have divided into topics that tend to be more useful in areas that seem (to me anyway) more user friendly and sensible (more direct) to a person walking away  (walk away support, critical examination of xianity, moving on, etc).  I really LIKE your topic areas.  Although I think we could perhaps have a small amount of cross pollination (specifically in the arrangement of things), I think I'd like to go with your topic areas for an initial go.  You have inspired me, foxmaiden.

I'll have a URL posted for my newest draft shortly.

Hey, thanks for the compliment.  I had just been trying to divide up the links page because there were so many links -- hadn't thought about how the over-all site would be organized.  I'm flexible.

Sorry that I didn't get this posted Sunday as planned. Spent most of Sunday and Monday night trying to get sound working on a new install.

Here's a possible layout for the site. http://www.chickitychina.com/wa/

I'm trying to come up with some other ideas, but for a purely informational site, I like this type of layout. Please, please, please, I'll listen to any suggestions, so feel free to pass them along. I'm using Cascading Style Sheets for layout, which should mean a faster download and easier layout changes for the future. I couldn't test how it looks on a Mac. If anyone has access to Mac, please see how it looks in Safari and any other major Mac browsers.

I took the image from the old site to make the logo in the upper right. If one of our more artistically skilled members could come up with a logo, then I say go for it. I do really like the idea behind the one that's there now. It seems to portray the right attitude.

I did stick with the current forum colors as a starting place. What I've done is plain, so our artistic members could really help out by adding some better visuals.

Foxmaiden, your link collection is ASTOUNDING! Thanks for your hard work tracking all this down. I do like St. Thomas' idea of breaking things up into smaller pieces. Here's a post I found helpful on Information Architecture, which should be up St Thomas' alley. The process gained a lot of its ideas from the Library Sciences. I used St Thomas' division of areas, but there may be another way to divide everything up into 5 to 7 areas. It all matters on what is going to be on the site.

Anyway, it's here's one layout possiblity to ponder.

Oh, and as far as a host goes, anything will do right now since we're not currently using any scripts or a database to generate the site. I would even volunteer space on my host for Walk Away. BUT, I'm not sure how some of my upcoming content for the rest of my site would go along with Walk Away. I don't want to piss anyone off if they are coming here for info on walking away and also get some of my juvenile content. But, the offer stands, regardless.

For small sites, there are some free hosts, but they usually mean advertising and popups. Hosts like BlueVirtual.com (and a ton of others) offer hosting for $9.95 or less, and that includes access to things like using scripts, a database, stats software, etc. It all matters what is needed for the site.

At last, I have a new computer and have recovered the old hard drive.  I will try to take a look at the links stuff this weekend.

Any luck with recovering the links?

I've emailed St Thomas a couple of times, but haven't gotten a response. Not sure where the site stands now.

Sorry I've not been around much -- have suddenly met someone wonderful and am in the throws of early relationship -- not spending any time at the computer!  I do have the links, but they are still under construction.  I will try to get to them soon.

Go and enjoy. The computer will always be there. The wonder of the early part of a relationship does not last forever. Enjoy it.

Brake,

Would you be willing to be our intitial web master and (at least initially) take full command control of producing and maintaining the WA website?

Asolutely! I'm on it.

I really want to see a permanent site at least as informative as the old one up, mostly because I know how much it meant to me.

It's too late tonight for me to begin anything, but let me get my notes back together.

Quick questions though: Do you have anything in writing or email from the old WA site folks that gives permission to use their old articles/site info/etc?

No, I can not get anyone from there to respond to me.  In fact, the old WA web site is only available in archives from somewhere.  I'll see if I can find it again.  Apparently the site is now defunct.  The walkaway.org domain name is not being used according to Netsolutions.  Or at least that is what appears to be the case.

If we can get copies of old articles, I think we could probably use them if we at least properly credit from where we got them.  Contacting the authors would be helpful as well.

Actually, I found an archive of the old WA site from one of your posts, Brake.  Here it is again:

Thanks for the archive.org link. I've been able to save all but two pages of the old site to my hard drive.

Guess we'll have to get busy tracking down the authors.

Unfortunately, someone already owns walkaway.org. They're just not using it.
