Check out this link. You can play some backward song clips to hear some "backward messages." I'm sure some of you remember the satanic controversy surrounding Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," but hey, check it out for yourself.(bottom of the page once you get there) Whether The Zepdid it intentionally or not, alot of people can definitely make the words out. And don't forget Styx...."Oh Satan, move in our voices."The Beatles' "Help" was kinda interesting, too. The alleged message is "Now he uses marijuana," which is kinda striking, considering what they were getting into at the time.(Maybe you'll also be able to make out the chorus singing "marijuana" in the background.)One of the dumber song samples on the website is Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About." I played it backwards, butits a bit ofa stretch to say I could hear "Grab our butt and whip us. Squeeze it." Go figure. And I thought this wasDAMN funny....they have an N'Sync song where you're supposed to be able to hear "I really got to eat penis."Well...as much as I hate to admit it, I couldn't make it out. (Oh well....I know Timberlake will come out eventually anyway.)There's even somebackward "Christian" messages. I playedan Inxs song and could hear "Oh Christ claim me then" as clear as if it was being played forward. As to whether Christ got around to claiming Michael Hutchence(Inxs' singer) the verdict is still out.Hutchence eventually died...allegedly from an an attempted act of autoerotic asphyxiation.http://www.reversespeech.com/music_reversals.htm

The one I remember is the theme song for Mr. Ed - the talking horse.  Who the Hell has time to listen to the theme song for Mr. Ed backwards?  What made them think of it?  Do they listen to every theme song for television shows, or did the talking horse prompt them?

funny thing is that the travelling preachers who came to our church sold a lot of merchandise (tapes/books) that got me into a lot of the music that i went out and eventually bought. queen, judas priest, the beatles etc etc etc. i realised how much better than the gospel trash that was force-fed to me that i actually took the mention of the group's names as a positive review and so i hunted down the music and started listening to it. i also rescued a heap of albums from one of my church bonfires. while everybody was inside the church conducting their service, i was sifting through the pile of albums outside before they came out to spark them up. my buddy and i were giddy with delight as we loaded up the trunk of our family cars with all this wonderful banned music. ....oh, and we sold the ones we didn't like and bought beer and cigarettes. at least i made the best of a crappy situation while being forced to go to church, huh?

ps - anybody that could burn a beatles album doesn't deserve to own one in the first place.

I find the whole thing to be very amusing, myself. I figure Jeff Lynne had the last word on it a long time ago: "hkab nrsht, hkab nrsht, hkab nrsht, hkab nrsht... myaht tb l'bsirivr za hk'zuim th"

Seriously, though... between back-masking and subliminal messages, it amazes me that people are still scared about things that it's proven don't get past our senses. People go looking for these imaginary demons, and musicians turn around and sometimes throw real ones into their work just to make fun of them...

Interestingly, William Poundstone mentioned the infamous "Snowblind" reversal in one of his books, but couldn't find "satan move through our voices"... I've heard a sample, it's definitely there, but that still doesn't mean I believe it was done intentionally (in any case it sounds like it was recorded through a very poorly tuned vocoder), and even if it was, there's no saying it wasn't a joke.

I can still remember when some backmasking bozos came to the Adventist college and lectured us all about how horrible rock and roll music was. Conveniently there was one thing they never talked about: what happens when you play Christian music backwards? Are there Satanic messages in The Battle Hymn of the Republic or A Mighty Fortress is Our God?

OK, that was trippy. Didn't know "Another One Bites the Dust" was so full of messages...My church wasn't into this. They just didn't believe in listening to rock music at all (because it was full of sex and violence).  I'm kinda suprised and freaked out...

Back in my fundie days we had this guy in our church who was obsessed with "backward masking" in rock music. On Saturdays a bunch of us guys would be at the church building, working on our buses, the building itself, etc. and this guy would be in a small office in the back, hunkered down over an old turntable, spinning Led Zep or some other album backward to get the lastest "message from Satan". Some of us more rabid bible thumpers would quote verses from Paul such as "touch not the unclean thing" or "have no fellowship with unbelievers but rather reprove them" and he'd just give us this blank stare, then say "But we gotta know what the devil is up to!"

On a side note regarding the Beatle's "Strawberry Fields" where John allegedly says "I buried Paul" (noted in the Reverse Speech web site's sound file), it's more likely he said, "cranberry sauce". If you have the Beatles Anthology CD's, listen to the less polished version of "Strawberry Fields" and it's pretty clear John's saying "cranberry sauce"...twice. Makes me think most of this backward masking crap is either a joke being played by the artist, coincidence, or a "cranberry sauce" reinterpreted to suit whatever purpose.
