Hello there,How lovely Riga is. I'm sorry I'm leaving tomorrow, and already looking forward to coming back. The Old Town is great, but the Art Nouveau elsewhere is breathtaking too. The biggest surprise I've had over the last few days has been the contrast between the capitals of Lithuania and Latvia. Vilnius, though also pretty, is a provincial backwater at this time of year. Riga, for better or for worse, is a roaring city.I Love You is a nice bar, from which I just got back. It has a room dedicated to Sigur Ros! And the hostel is smart, despite the unequivocal name - ProfitCamp - and the fact that I'm clearly getting too old for dorms and their occupants returning home at all hours.Arlabunakti!

Good to know that you had a great time in Riga. You're right, it's much louder and brasher than Vilnius. I think it's a reflection of the fact that the Russian influence in Riga is much stronger.

As for being too old to sleep in dorms... surely not!

Here's an article in The Times about two girls who went Inter-railing across Europe in 1973 when they were 18. And then decided to do it all again last summer, thirty-two years later...

Back on tracks

$%*'`[Alberto]%*'`@Ciao Bennox,
I have the questions about Riga.
you wrote that Riga is beautiful but is it safe? I don't know east europe good but they say it can be dangerus sometimes although worth to go there. I want to go in may and my wife say she want also to go with me but I worry something can happen to her. you think it is safe for she to go or is it better to go alone or in the gruppo? You can think it is stupid but I relly want to be sure. And other question: must I reserve a hotel earlier or I can find something no problem on place? And which contry near I should visit if I have free time? Thank you very much for answers for my questions. Bye!
Alberto

PS. and what it means ?Arlabunakti'? :-)

Ciao Alberto,

I was only there for a few days, so I'm hardly an expert.  Do people say Eastern Europe can be dangerous?  Of course, some parts can, as can anywhere in the world.  You definitely should not be discouraged from travelling by ridiculous generalisations, though.  I'm sure that you can look after your wife, or she can look after you, as long as you take the same precautions you would at home.

I stayed in a hostel, booked beforehand.  I imagine that booking somewhere in advance would make sense, so that you at least have peace of mind when you get there.  If you have time, then you can take your pick from Lithuania and Estonia, or travel further afield, depending on what you want to see.  Or you can give Riga the time it deserves, and go for trips outside the capital too.  Alan knows more than I do about that, though.

Arlubanakti was supposed to mean buona notte, although I wasn't sober when I wrote it..
