Dear All, Wish you were here in Sofia. What a pleasant city! Maybe it's just me, but all the locals I've come across have been so nice! Getting a smile when you order your baklava - would could be better? I'm off further afield in Bulgaria tomorrow, and will be interested to see how the provinces compare. Accommodation-wise, both Hostel Mostel and Hostel Sofia are super-friendly. For cheap, excellent local food and wine, with sweet, competent service, in smart surroundings, 24 hours a day, head to Divaka. I believe there are at least two branches. See you in Plovdiv!

Nice postcard, Bennox.

So are you going anywhere else apart from Sofia and Plovdiv?

What was your best experience in Sofia?

Thanks, Alan - it's nice to have one's efforts appreciated  Apologies to you and anyone else anxiously waiting to hear what happened to me in Plovdiv, but you know how it is finding time to write postcards!

I'm back home now.  Plovdiv is rather lovely, and even lovelier in my humble opinion is Veliko Tarnovo, which was my next stop.  We also went to a fairly nondescript town named Pleven.

General impressions of Bulgaria were forged by very friendly people, doing their best to confuse with the old shaking/nodding heads thing.  Waitresses will respond to orders such as 'Bulgarian red wine please' with their slightly demented-looking rolling of the head from side to side, accompanied by a cheery grin.  It's easy to be caught out.  What I saw of the country is very pretty, though there's obvious poverty and lots of development going on.

Every second shop seems to sell shoes.  The Bulgarian ones are cheap and some are very nice.  In Veliko Tarnovo the other dominant industry appeared to be estate agencies aimed particularly at Brits.  Since our tour involved meetings with European info centres and national radio, we were given an interesting insight into the attitudes of the people prior to entry to the EU.  Apparently the locals are quite welcoming to the British invasion.  Support for accession is apparently also high, though recent high-profile assassinations and the rise of an extreme-right political party have clouded things.

Overriding impression of Sofia?  That restaurant was hard to beat.  The food was excellent and cheap generally, actually.  Plovdiv's citizens are not very good at directing tourists, or even being able to say where they are in the city.  And as for Tarnovo, our tour guide was lovely.  I'll put you in touch if you like
