Scotrail Bargain Berths, arguably the first low cost rail service in the UK - introduced in Spring 2005 - operates an overnight sleeper train from London to Scotland with berths available for as cheap as ?9.

I would argue that this sounds a lot more convenient than getting up at a ridiculous hour to head up to Luton or Stansted airports and fly to Scotland on easyJet or Ryanair.

It's also a lot better for the environment.

It's fairly competitive in terms of price too.

Then again, if you're travelling in both directions the GNER Great Value Fare from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh - see above - is even better.

The dutchflyer is the UK's only international low fare train service to date.

Formerly known as the Amsterdam Express service, the dutchflyer now connects by train from London Liverpool Street - and several other stations across Essex, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk - to Harwich port.

Passengers then transfer to a ferry and cross the English Channel to the Hook of Holland before getting back on the train. The ticket is then valid for onward transport to any railway station in the Netherlands.

A one-way fare comes to ?5.

This is very competitive compared to the best one-way airfares offered by easyJet and Transavia from London airports to Rotterdam and Amsterdam, especially when you take the costs of getting to and from the airports into account.

Then there's the soon-to-be-introduced megatrain service which has one-way fares from London Waterloo to either Southampton or Portsmouth for as little as ?.50...

.. which makes the other low fare rail services look expensive by comparison.
