This started out as such an easy project.   I mentioned multiple times that I like retail outlet series LPs.

The Zenith series has been one that has been a challenge,  I slowly collected the 6 LP most of the series.
LP number 4 has eluded me.  till now.

I have done my internet research and have seen copies on ebay and elsewhere but never bit.  I am still searching the local thrift stores.   So recently a friend who is a Record reseller ,   got an estate sale and he gives me any Christmas stuff he gets because to him there is no resale potential to Christmas stuff ,  and he would just recycle them to the thrift stores,   bonus to me.     Sorry for the long story.

One he recently gave me was Christmas A Gift of Christmas which looking at the cover was familiar but not noteworthy,   however when I looked at the back it said zenith volume 4.   But the front cover had no Zenith  logo like all the Zenith series usually have.

Then it gets weirder,  the front cover is different,  yet familiar,  looking thru my archives I find the same cover,  same name,  but the back has no Zenith  identification.   All have the same Capitol   SL -6687  ID

This is the typical Zenith #4  Cover I have Been Looking for

This is the Zenith #4 I found,  no Zenith on the cover but called out on the back
which is below.

Now recognizing the cover,  I found this in my archives with no Zenith attachment,  the cover is
the same,  only the back has the Zenith removed.

Anyone got any explanation of what is happening,  All have the same LP # of SL-6687.
I am so frustrated,   seems  I had Zenith #4  in music form anyway for years.

So am I just a Bozo or is there some story or logic here. How and when  did Capitol release this guy and
how many times without the Zenith tie in?

Edited to correct error ,  release company is Capitol

Steve,

First of all, twice in your post you referred to the Zenith Volume 4 LP as a Columbia LP, but it isn't; it is a Capitol LP. However, Columbia did produce Zenith's Volumes 2 and 5.

Secondly, as for the Capitol produced Zenith Volume 4 LP that you are inquiring about, Capitol Records was notorious for double-marketing their custom-made LPs. They did the exact same thing for Volume 8 of W.T. Grants A Very Merry Christmas in 1974. Capitol had a version for Grants to sell in their retail stores with the Grants identifiers, and they also had a version with the exact same front and back cover that they sold direct without the Grants identifiers. The only difference with what Capitol did with the double-marketed Zenith Volume 4 LP is that they used a different front cover for the version they marketed directly to the public. Another thing they did (and why I don't know) was to create a hybrid of the LP with the direct-marketed front cover and the Zenith-marketed back cover. Perhaps because they had to print more copies of the Zenith-marketed LP and ran out of the custom-made Zenith front covers. It's really anybody's guess.

By the way, among other LPs that Capitol Records double-marketed were the LPs they produced for Firestone in the 1970s.

Chip and Steve,

I've noticed this on other albums too, where they use the same artwork, but but it's for double selling purposes trying to fool people into thinking they are getting an entirely different album.

Another one is J. C. Penny "That Christmas Feeling" Colulmbia Special Products, 10390  It was also make for "The Treasury" but the album is identical in every way on the vinyl, but on the jacket on the front and back, not on the shrinkwrap, they have a sticker coverying J. C. Penney I don't have the album with me being I am at McDonalds using their free Wi-Fi,  but I think it was a black label with silver lettering.  And that was the only difference.

Oops  thanks  Chip for the correction
I was so focusing on all the LPs I had with the same number my mind must have vapor locked .

the other interesting thing on the two LPs I do have,   the hybrid  Zenith   and the release without the Zenith name,    The actual LP Vinyl labels are completely different in their color one is gold the other black with red trim.   Neither has the Zenith name on the LP labels.

Susan,

That is not the correct Columbia Records catalog number for JC Penney's 1973 album That Christmas Feeling. The correct catalog number is P-11853. The partial catalog number that you alluded to was for JC Penney's 1971 winter album entitled Winter Memories. And the complete Columbia catalog number is C-10390.
