No way, the unabridged Capitol David Rose "Little Drummer Boy" LP with his original "Christmas Tree" song? Are they going to lease the original master tapes too, I wonder? This is great to us music people!

Then there's also the David Rose's first Christmas LP, "A Merry Christmas To You". released in 1956. However, this album exists only in mono. Chip, are they going to release just the music on "The David Rose Christmas Album" or a combination of both?

RE:Ed Ames & David Rose Christmas CD Releases Coming Soon!
(Date Posted:08/23/2011 19:00)
Unfortunately there has
been a small glitch in the CD release of the David Rose Christmas LP. It seems
that our friends at Capitol Records cannot locate the original 1968 album cover
artwork in their archives.
Oy vey... I'm really not sure what
was more shocking today: the earthquake we experienced here in New York
or that revelation from Capitol Records.  But not to worry kiddies;
Chipper to the rescue! I will be sending Gordon Anderson my pristine copy
of the David Rose LP to his home in Hollywood for him to give to the Capitol
Records technicians. They will then do a high-quality digital scan of the album
cover artwork of my LP which can then in turn be used for the release of the
new CD.
 This small setback
shouldn't delay the anticipated November 22 release date; but if it
does, I'll certainly let everyone know.
By the way, I usually never let any of
my Top 300 LPs out of my house -- especially the ones in my 1st Tier
(albums 1-125); but it's either that or the new CD gets released with the 1969
reissue artwork; and I certainly won't let that happen.
Update coming soon!

So glad the original cover art is being used. Good job Chip! Do you have any idea what the cover art will look like for the Ed Ames cd? Will both album covers be featured on the front or perhaps the 1967 LP cover on the front and the 1970 LP cover on the back?

Jim:
Thanks for the offer, but no worries;
I have a couple backup copies in my archives. Unfortunately, though,
neither one is in as pristine a condition as the one in my main collection which I lent to Gordon to make the CD; although, one of those extra copies is actually
personally signed by Mr. Rose himself.
I packed the LP really good and shipped
it Express Mail next day delivery with extra insurance. So it should be fine.
Notwithstanding, it was still very difficult for me to part with it. The album
is quite rare as Capitol Records only printed the LP with the original cover
for just the one year in 1968 and it took me many years of searching to find such a
pristine, mint copy as the one that resides in my main collection. But it's a sacrifice I just had to make in order to insure
that the CD gets released in its original form.

Justin:
The cover of the Ed Ames double CD with sport the artworks of both the 1967 and 1970 LPs.

This is shaping up to be a very expensive fall for me. First the Beach Boys' Smile Sessions box, and now these!
But, yes, as someone who made a point of writing Gordon and requesting these, I'll *definitely* be putting my money where my mouth is.

I know what you mean. Several years ago I was spending money on bringing my Christmas CD collection up to date. Then over the last 5 years or so, that has slackened off considerably, as I now only wait for worthwhile new re-releases such as these. (And don't forget that upcoming Christmas Celebration compilation with the Percy Faith tracks).
There was a period where I would buy every new Christmas CD just for the sake of having them in my collection, such as the one by the American Idol artists. But I am happy to say I've learned my lesson and stopped that practice. If you don't care for that type of "music" in the first place -- or should I say "moaning" -- you're not going to like their idea of what passes for Christmas music either.

RE:Ed Ames & David Rose Christmas CD Releases Coming Soon!

Hello Chip and the rest of the Christmas music gang:
Does it still look like we'll be able to purchase the David Rose Christmas CD in just 2 months? That will be fantastic.
Also, seeing that our long time friend (and my avatar since day one) Mr. Glen Campbell is ailing, it would certainly be most appropriate for an American release of "That Christmas Feeling" that has never been on CD in the USA, only in Australia and Europe, that it make it's initial USA release, with a bonus track of the song cut from the LP as an unreleased single too.
My wish list after that is to get the stereo/3-track 1959 Percy Faith "Music of Christmas" master tapes and have Mike Bernicker or another talented Columbia producter re-equalize and remaster this LP onto CD, along with a re-release of the 2nd Music of Christmas / Halleujah.
Then, to locate the 'hidden masters' of Perry Como's 1968 Christmas LP recordings so that you can remix it to bury the background singers and pull the master's voice up and out in front of the mix, as there were two mixes of everything after people were fainting from the NON-air conditioned RCA recording studio and re-recordings at Webster Hall!
Now, to win the lottery..... Hope Gordon & Gabby can get our Christmas faves rolling!

RE:Ed Ames & David Rose Christmas CD Releases Coming Soon!
(Date Posted:09/28/2011 23:11)
Well there I was . . . thinking ill of Gordon Anderson and his Christmas compilation CDs. Then he leaves the company and Collectors' Choice all but closes the door on our longed for Golden Age of Christmas Music album releases on CD. The clouds roll in, the sky darkens and the sun no longer shines. Life becomes a burden rather than a joy. No, I wasn't very happy with Mr. Anderson at all. After all, in that line of work, you are only as good as your last CD release, right? Trudging through the days, kicking the dirt and becoming even more disgusted day by day with the lack of new and wonderful releases of Christmas music, I just couldn't think of where a ray of light would come from. "It's all HUMBUG, I tell you, HUMBUG!" Suddenly a flash of lightening, a crack of thunder . . . I look up to see God rays beaming down from a break in the clouds! Angels start to sing and my face is warmed by the golden glow of sunlight breaking through the darkness. Who is the bringer of these glad tidings of joy? Who brought truth to "It's always darkest before the dawn? "
Gordon Anderson! Uh, did you say Gordon Anderson? Well shut my mouth. Unclean! Unclean! I am such a heathen! I repent in sackcloth and ashes. Not just one, but two of Chips top tier releases on CD for the first time! I have been looking for a nice copy of The David Rose Christmas Album for two years without luck. I couldn't even find an old beat up crappy copy. Neither could I find The Little Drummer Boy reissue. Man! I couldn't be happier! Ed Ames to boot? And a double album CD too? Wow! And a heartfelt "Thank YOU!" to Sir Chip for mailing out his precious and pristine copy of Mr. Rose's album cover for the CD art work. An outstanding act of charity and risk that is much appreciated by us all. (By the way, have you gotten your album back yet?" It may
sound stupid, but I have been sweatin' the load on this a bit. You are
like the National Archives of Christmas Music. I would hate to see
anything happen to one of your treasures. -=Perry

"Order-Up Folks" - time for us to put our "money where our mouth is" and get some initial advanced orders placed on Amazon.com for these Christmas treasures so that more Christmas treasures will be forthcoming next year! And Perry ( Strider77 ) - superb prose; how you wove an Old Testament reading from Ash Wednesday into your Judeo-Christian ethics regarding our friend Gordon was worth of a Pulitzer! Goes to prove we "Christmas music lovers" have a sense of humor as well as a love for special music! John

Thank you, both John and Chip for the kind words. I'm glad that the humor was appreciated. Needless to say, I have pre-ordered both CDs and will be anxiously awaiting their arrival in my mailbox.
Chip, I am thrilled to hear that the album cover is safe and secure. I'll be thinking about you every time I look at my new CD. Well, almost every time. ;-)

SinterKlaus: have no fear; just one song "The Christmas Tree" makes the David Rose LP/CD a worthwhile purchase; it is an original one of a kind Christmas song that captures the Christmas spirit and makes my Top 50 Christmas 'Singles' Songs list as does the short "I Saw 3 Ships". Regards, John

RE:Ed Ames & David Rose Christmas CD Releases Coming Soon!

That's exactly right; the highlight and centerpiece Mr. Rose's Christmas album is his great original composition, The Christmas Tree.
Mr. Rose used to perform the song and many of his other great original compositions (Holiday for Strings, The Stripper, Calypso Melody, etc.) on the Red Skelton Show, where he was the long-time musical director from 1951-1971.
By the way, in my 2006 audio restoration of the Yule Log, I restored The Christmas Tree to its rightful place on the soundtrack; it had originally aired on the program from 1968-1972. (For my article on the 2006 audio restoration, please Click Here.)

Has johnnyelectron ever posted his Top 50 Christmas Singles elsewhere on this board? I think that would be interesting to read. Do any other members here have such a list? (Is there another thread somewhere?)
Chip: I'm constantly consulting your Top 300 Album listing for various reasons. Do you have another listing for individual songs, or has that been asked before?

Got my copy of the David Rose Christmas Album yesterday. Not one I'd heard in full before. It's good, but short. A nice addition to the collection. Chip gets a shout out in the credits for providing the cover art.

Tom:
Glad to hear that you enjoyed the new David Rose CD.
To all:
One thing I just wanted to point out about the new David Rose CD is that there is an error in the CD liner notes that were written by Gene Sculatti. He incorrectly stated that the release year for the original LP was 1967, when in fact it was 1968. I advised Gordon Anderson of this and sent him links to the Billboard magazine articles from November 16, 1968 and December 14, 1968 which clearly substantiate that my information is correct.
So again, let me reiterate categorically that the original LP was released in 1968, not 1967. Unfortunately, there is no way to change what's been printed already; but at least I can set the record straight here on this message board.

We received our copies of the David Rose and Ed Ames releases late last week. Both are excellent and I particularly like the Ed Ames renditions of some of the "standards". In particular, his take on Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! is very nice. Is everyone enjoying their Ed Ames this year?

Johnny,
It makes no difference where you order the new CDs from as Gordon tracks the sales numbers for the discs from each retailer. In fact, he told me yesterday that they are selling very well.
