Yes, perhaps this will motivate Sony Music to re-release the remastered CD they issued in 1997. But we shall see.

RE:Percy Faith - 'Hallelujah' on iTunes

Its been a while since I've posted but I have been prepping/buying my music for the season and came across this thread. I had a few questions? Was anyone able to discern the source of this Hallmark release? I know that it has been mentioned that much of their catalog is ripped from LP but there was a mention that it also could have come from the cd re-release. Its tough to tell from the itunes samples. Any ideas? Also, even if this is a rip from the '58 lp, is it a worthwhile download? (I'm leaning towards "yes" due to the records significance.) Opinions? Cheers Bob

There's really no way to tell from the iTune audio samples what source Hallmark Records took the material for the downloads their offering.
But in the end it really doesn't matter, because even if they took it from an LP, as long as it was a good clean disc, then the download would be well worth it -- especially if one doesn't already have this absolutely essential Christmas LP in their collection. This, of course, being one of the two greatest Christmas albums ever recorded, along with Music Of Christmas. (Click here to see my list of the Top 50 Christmas albums of all-time.)
For those who are new to this forum and haven't seen it, here's an excerpt from a post I previously filed on the message board that pretty much says it all about Percy Faith's classic and legendary albums Music Of Christmas and Hallelujah:
In my entire collection, there are only two albums that I do not have the audacity to rate on my scale of 1-10, as they are beyond my ability to apply such an arbitrary number due to the sheer perfection that was achieved in their majesty and reverence of arranging, conducting and performance. They are: Music of Christmas, originally released in 1954 in mono, then re-recorded and re-released in 1959 in stereo; and Hallelujah, originally released in 1958, then later reissued in 1965 as Music of Christmas Vol. 2. To rate these two albums in my opinion, would be like putting a price on the Mona Lisa -- which of course, is priceless. Mr. Faith's third Christmas album was Christmas Is from 1966, and I rate this album at 8 on my scale of 1-10.

Thanks Chip, I agree that it doesn't matter and I've just downloaded it. I was just wondering since I have taken to transferring many of my Christmas LPs, as well as CDs to digital format (by way of USB-ready turntable). I suppose I was wondering if the download would be worth the money after having gone through the trouble of digitizing my LP copy. My LP is clean but this version seems a bit clearer so I suppose the answer is yes. You definitely hit the nail on the head though......If you don't yet have a copy of this amazing album this is a MUST download. Cheers, Bob

The sound on the iTunes samples is very clean. However it is also very compressed and sounds as if an extreme amount of noise reduction has been applied when compared to samples from the 1997 remastered CD. I love the sound of vinyl and don't mind the crackles and pops at all. It is in attempting to hide the fact that vinyl has been utilized as a source that the sound gets degraded.
My personal feeling is that the best (and most realistic) chance to get this music back out there in a way that truly allows it to shine is to lobby ArkivMusic to add the 1997 CD ("Music of Christmas, Volume 2") to their Arkiv program. For those who aren't familiar, Arkiv releases are CD-Rs of out-of-print CDs produced with the blessing and cooperation of the original record companies.
I emailed them earlier this year requesting specifically a release of the 1997 Sony CD, and this was their response:
The title you are seeking, Percy Faith - Music of Christmas, Vol. 2 on Sony 65401 is on our research list of sought masters for future licensed ArkivCD reissues. For now, I can only suggest that you check back with us in the future should a reissue become available. Licensing is also a consideration as we do not have access to every record label or release.
Also, be sure to check for desired pieces through our search tabs along the top of the ArkivMusic homepage as often times an album or performance assumed to be long out-of-print is in fact available again.
I would urge others who would like access to this remastered CD at a reasonable price to do the same. Contact ArkivMusic at the following email address:

Brian,
I can tell you right now that the chances of this happening are extremely unlikely, as Sony Music is very protective of Mr. Faith's Christmas material and has never before leased it out for distribution. As I'm sure you already know, Sony is still printing the 1959 stereo recording of Music Of Christmas directly on their own label. In fact, last year was the album's Golden anniversary, and never once in those 50 years has it ever been out of print. As for Percy Faith's third Christmas album from 1966, Christmas Is, it too is still being printed by directly Sony, and has never been out of print since its original release date as well.
With regard to Hallelujah (aka Music Of Christmas, Vol. 2), even though Sony Music is not currently printing it, they have up to now refused to lease it out to other record companies for distribution. And even if they ever did, the chances are almost nil that it would ever be to a company like Arkiv Music. In fact, it is probably even unlikely that they would ever in the end consider leasing it out to a record company like Collectors' Choice Music. However, I will still keep working toward that end, as CCM releases genuine CDs, and not CD-Rs like Arkiv Music.
I speak quite candidly when I say that I, myself, would not like to see that precious album fall into the hands of a company like Arkiv Music. I think we can do better with it, although it might take a while.
As for the rest of Mr. Faith's music library (a total of 76 albums), all the printing rights have now been leased out to Collectables Records and Taragon Records.

I too await the day of salvation when Columubia/Sony/Legacy actually does a decent remaster of "Music of Christmas" or let's Collector's Choice do it. I bought a 'foreign" CD of MofC and it is from the 1954 mono LP, clicks and all. Bought an 'import" and it too, ws mastered from an LP! So hard to get a nice copy. The best I''ve been able to do to date is to buy an unopened 7-1/2 IPS Reel to Reel tape of MofC. The wait continues.....

Well..having downloaded the itunes version of the album I can say that it is absolutely worth it. Especially, as Chip mentioned, for those who do not yet have a copy of this masterpiece. As I mentioned, I had digitized my LP copy and the quality of the Itunes download is noticibly better. While I can't say it is on par with CD quality, I can say that anyone considering it should absolutely spend the 6 dollars and listen to this incredible album. Overall, it was a relief to find it after seeing the market for imports and out of print copies. These were either too expensive of an unknown commodity. Cheers, Bob

I was blessed when I found a copy of Sony's 'Music of Christmas, Vol 2' in a used bin at a record store a few years ago for less than five bucks.
