Hi Folks:

Glad to be able to get through for a new posting (Chips thanks for your email response). I think that it's not so much a 'technical glitch' not to get onto the site but a testament to you Chip that you have made such a great site for all of us who grew up in the glow of the WPIX fireplace that we now have a great place to gather.

Anyway, thanks, and as I look at my own 'hot' fireplace in my own home all these years later, I thought that maybe, just maybe. we could start a Topic that speaks to our own individual favorite Singles renditions of the classic songs by the great artists.  While Chips 300 Best Albums probably encompass all of these, I thought that in these days of Ipods and MP3s when folks of my generation (40 plus!) have listened the great stations and music (from WPAT FM and WPIX TV, etc) forward to today could list and ultimately rank: 1) our favorite  Christmas songs and 2) our favorite versions of those singers (or orchestras as the case may be) performing those songs and 3) in some cases, the particular versions we like. For instance, Perry Como, to my mind 'owns' the song, There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays.  That being said, I have a WCBS FM compilation of a version which is too fast and too loud (and often heard on FM today) but the BETTER and more 'classic' version is the one I have from the Time Life compilation, Home For Christmas Vol 2, at 2:58 is a far superior track.

So I would like to start:

From A to Z by Song Title:

A Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives - from the Rudolph & Friends (Rankin & Bass album collection, not the Burl Ives & the Weavers album ( run time:  1:21)

A Wonderful Christmastime -  Paul McCartney & Wings - the 'classic' version -(my newest from on That's What I Call Christmas Vol 1) ( run time 3:45 )

...I will continue with this level of detail....is there interest?  For instance, since there are arguments to be made to include both Nat Kng Cole's classic rendition of "The Christmas Song", it is equally important to include Frank and Bing's duet on the song, released in recent years as culled from old tv shows....

Is this a good topic?  Please let me know and I will add 100s more and will encourage response and additions as well as criticism if so needed.

Please let me know and again Thanks Chip for letting us have a great Metro NY based All Christmas forum.

Regards,

Jim A

Jim,

If this is something that other board members would like to participate in, that's perfectly fine with me.

However, since my views on most Christmas music has been stated many times on the board before and are pretty well-known, I will for the most part abstain, except for an occasional comment here and there.

And the first comment I'd like to make is regarding your reference to Burl Ives' two versions of the song A Holly Jolly Christmas. First, I agree that the definitive version is his 1964 recording which he did for the Rankin/Bass animated classic, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. However, the version that Burl did for his 1965 Decca Christmas album was not with the Weavers as you had stated. The only Christmas music the Weavers ever did were eight songs for Decca Records in 1951. These eight songs were initially released on four 45-rpm singles; then, the next year, in 1952, Decca released them again on a 10" LP entitled, We Wish You A Merry Christmas.

I'll go with THE CHRISTMAS SONG by the legendary Nat King Cole - specifically, the popular 1961 version.

From the now instantly recognizable opening notes to the famous "Jingle Bells" guitar ending,  no other Christmas song ever captured the magic of the Christmas season more than Mr. Cole's THE CHRISTMAS SONG. But that's just my opinion.

Chip,

Thanks for the information...very much appreciated.

I do very much appreciate the input...if I get more responses I will continue this thread...I do have my favorite Christmas playlist which numbers about 400 songs...sometime I will share, if there's interest.

In the interim, thanks for the forum...this is a great place for all things Christmas and New York.

We all really appreciate the ability to have this to enjoy.

Merry Christmas always,

I'm a fan of lists, and favorites, and best of's - so I thought I'd respond to this thread.

I think everybody agrees that "The Christmas Song" is one of the greatest - and most covered - Christmas songs. It's kind of hard to ruin this song. I like almost every version I've ever heard. So, I thought I would choose that song and list my Top Ten favorite versions of "The Christmas Song".

1. Nat "King" Cole (the popular version however you refer to it)
2. Perry Como (from Perry Como Sings Christmas Music)
3. Roger Whittaker
4. The Carpenters
5. Mel Torme (his earlier version - 1966?)
6. Johnny Mathis
7. Jack Jones
8. Vince Guaraldi
9. Frank Sinatra
10. The Canadian Brass

What are your favorite versions of this or any other songs?
