Hi Chip,

I just got back from a Thrift Sore run and purchased a 10" LP  Mario Lanza Sings Christmas Carols - RCA Victor LM 155.  I tried searching online to find a release year but all I can find is the same album I just purchased and a couple boxed sets of 45 RPM's with the same cover art but none list a year.  This album isn't in the best of condition and I'm not even sure if I will try to clean up the tracks to transfer the album to my computer.  I basically bought it for nostalgic purposes.

Susan,

The release year for the original 10" LP version of Mario Lanza Sings Christmas Songs was 1951. Then, in 1956, RCA Victor re-released the album as a 12" LP (catalog #LM-2029). After Mr. Lanza recorded a new stereo Christmas album in 1959, Lanza Sings Christmas Carols (stereo catalog #LSC-2333 & mono catalog #LM-2333), RCA released his original mono album on its Camden budget label in 1963 as Christmas Hymns And Carols (mono catalog #CAL-777 & simulated stereo catalog #CAS-777). Finally, the simulated stereo version of the LP was released by Pickwick in 1977 (catalog #CAS-7777E).

You're very welcome, Susan.

By the way, in my previous post I only gave one of the two catalog numbers for Mario Lanza's 1959 Lanza Sings Christmas Carols LP, and there were two: one for the stereo, and one for the mono version of the stereo recording. I edited my original post above to show both catalog numbers.

I have "Ave Maria" by Mario Lanza on a Rhino 2-CD compilation "Home For Christmas".  Is this cut on Lanza's 1959 RCA LP, "Lanza Sings Christmas Carols"?

No Frank, it's not.

Mario Lanza released Ave Maria as a single 45-rpm record in 1955 (catalog #47-6334); the B side was I'll Walk With God. Several years later, RCA reissued the song as a single again (catalog #447-0774); on this reissue, the B side was The Lord's Prayer.

My late Aunt Arlene had this 10" Lp in her collection-it was the most played, especially around the Holidays! My Mom,who'd gave her the Lp,got the Camden Lp shortly after Arlene passed from this world..I've got The Original 1963 Camden Lp,with totally different artwork than its 1970 reissue cousin, and the 1987 Pickwick version, again, with different artwork, and the 2-fer on Collectables and the one on Delta.

Mario's entire Christmas input, minus the "Living Stereo" Remakes, were, and,I think, are still,Available on the RCA Gold Seal's "Christmas with Mario Lanza" CD..all his 1956 Lp and the complete 10" Lp are on it,plus the only "Live in London" track on it "Pieta,Signore",as well as "I'll Walk with God" from The Student Prince..at only $9.95,I think! A GREAT CD! (If you can get around the "Fake Stereo", that is!) Michael Boyce

Yes Michael, that is correct.

By the way, the Gold Seal CD also includes 3 other bonus tracks that you didn't mention: Ave Maria, O Holy Night and The Virgin Slumber Song
