THE WPIX Yule LOG

CELEBRATES 44 YEARS

THE YULE LOG TO AIR ON DECEMBER 25

FROM 9am to 1pm

NEW YORK, December 2, 2010 – It wouldn’t be a holiday in New York without the WPIX Yule Log! The Yule Log, the famous film loop of a burning log in a hearth, has warmed the hearts of` viewers since its debut on WPIX in 1966. To celebrate the Log’s 44th anniversary, WPIX will air The Yule Log (available in HD) from 9am-1pm on Christmas morning, Saturday, December 25th. At 1pm, immediately following The Yule Log, WPIX will air the beloved holiday classic, March of the Wooden Soldiers.

The Log will also be offered with downloadable elements including wallpaper and a “portable” Log at www.wpix.com. Viewers can follow the Yule Log on twitter @PIXYULELOG and become a fan of the Official Yule Log on Facebook (PIXYuleLog). Log merchandise (including “Nice Log!” and “That’s HOT!” boxer shorts) can be found at: www.cafepress.com/wpix/.

In recent years, The Yule Log has been digitally re-mastered and fully restored. In 2001 the original film was color corrected and cleaned. In 2003, the Log was up-converted to High Definition and WPIX now airs The Yule Log in HD. In 2006, to celebrate the Log’s 40th anniversary, Lawrence F. “Chip” Arcuri and Joe Malzone, the creators of TheYuleLog.com, restored the audio of The Yule Log and in 2009, with the assistance of “Chip” Arcuri, WPIX added a new fourth hour to the program, including 23 classic holiday songs. The fourth hour (which begins at 12 noon on 12/25) leads off with Mantovani’s beautiful interpretation of Adeste Fideles, a classic that aired on the Yule Log in the late 1960s; now restored back to the program. The new hour also adds 9 new artists including Bert Kaempfert, Mitch Miller, Bing Crosby, Sammy Kaye, Vic Damone, Johnny Mathis and Mike Douglas.

In addition, the WPIX Yule Log will be airing on the following Tribune Broadcasting Stations:

(All broadcast times are for December 25th and are shown in that city's local time)

Sorry Michael, but that listing in the press release is for the local WGN Channel 9 in Chicago.

As I said earlier on the board, WGN America is not showing the Yule Log this year. It will be on the new Antenna TV network next year, Click here.

Hi Chip,

I was searching our guide on Dish Network and it shows that KTLA is showing the Yule Log from, 7:30 to 9:00 am pm the 25th and then from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm on the 25th.

And it shows that KWGN is airing it from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm on the 25th.  But the Press Release shows 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Is the press release from WPIX incorrect?  Being they don't mention KTLA.  We don't subscribe to KTLA or KWGN, but could add those two channels as well as WSBK if we wanted.  But none of them are available in HD as is with WPIX we can only get it in SD but that is better than not getting it at all.

According to WGN America, They are going to be airing a couple episodes of In The Heat Of The Night.  Walker, Texas Ranger.  Law & Order Criminal Intent.  The Unit between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm Christmas day so I guess, Sean Compton hasn't had a change of heart and wanting to give the viewers what they want.

Such a disappointment.  But hopefully next year we with get to watch The Yule Log in HD, but as of right now, Dish Network has no information on whether or not we will be getting "Antenna TV"

Susan,

The Dish Network is wrong: the Yule Log will be shown on KWGN in Denver from 12pm to 3pm, as stated in the press release. I called program director Garrett Sailer on his cell phone and he confirmed that for me. He also said that following the Yule Log they will be showing Miracle on 34th Street from 3pm to 5pm.

As for KTLA in Los Angeles, they are showing their own version of the Yule Log, not our original program.

Hi Chip,

I think I forgot about time zone changes, so KWGN would be right for them but the time they are showing us Eastern.

The guide doesn't give me any specific information on any of the channels that are showing "The Yule Log".  All the information shows  "Series/Special - Seasonal Music"

I thought maybe KTLA would be the WPIX Yule Log being the second airing is 4 hours, but you already clarified that for me.

Thanks

Re: 2011 Yule Log Availability on Antenna Network and 2010 Availability

For those on Time Warner cable in the rest of New York State......I'm just curious how/where the 2010 broadcast could have been received?  Anybody out there in Western NY have the opportunity to watch it???  Please drop a note.

For 2011, not sure of TWC will be carrying the Antenna NW or not.  I hope so.....would be fun to see the Yule Log broadcast after all these years away.  Loved our system when WPIX was one our cable's flagship import stations. I found myself watching NY City news, sports & weather as much or more than I did our own.  Great memories.....fond recall of the Yankees on PIX before the broadcasting dynasty got put in place with YES, Gerry Gerard on Sports, et. al.

If any info, please re: above, would love to have the feedback.  Thanks in advance.

RE:Official 2010 WPIX Yule Log Press Release
(Date Posted:05/01/2011 09:05)

Tenorplayer23,

I live in the Buffalo, area and Time Warner Cable doesn't carry WPIX.  I was going to go with Time Warner after they took over Adelphia and I asked them specifically about WPIX Channel 11 out of New York City and they told me that they don't and can't offer the channel to their customers in Western NY.  I'm not sure who too over Adelphia in the Rochester area so I can't answer for anyone in that area.

We had DirecTV for a while about 12 years ago but they weren't going to give us our local channels.  Dish Network was able to give us our local channels, well, some of them, but to get a couple of them they would've had to install a 2nd Dish and the landlady had just had the house done over with vinyl siding and didn't want any holes in it.

But Dish Network was able to offer us a Superstation Package.  WPIX, WWOR, WSPK, KWGN and KTLA or you could get them A-la-Carte so we were able to get WPIX.  Then DirecTV finally came out with all our local stations and we only needed one 3 LNB Dish so we switched back to DirecTV and unfortunately lost WPIX, but like everyone else, we did get WGN America.  So we could still watch the Yule Log, but even after the 3-hour restoration, they would only show the abridged 2- hour version.

I had called DirecTV several times a year to see about getting WPIX and they told us because we already have a CW affiliate, that the FCC wouldn't let them give us another, but then we also get WGN America which is a CW Affiliate and that was OK.  They told me it has to do with a Direct Market Broadcast Area. (That isn't the exact wording, but I can't think of how they explained it)  But if Dish Network can give us all 5 of the stations I mentioned above, why can't DirecTV?

We moved about 16 months ago and there was already a DirecTV Dish here and 2 Dish Network Dishes so for DirecTV I just had to connect the cables to the receiver,  but the way the DirecTV dish was installed, it was on the railing of our deck and our neighbor has a garage just on the other side of the deck and it looked like it would block the signal, but it was OK.  Until, we got a couple snow storms and the snow piled up on the garage roof and blocked out or signal.  So the first Christmas, we lost part of the WPIX broadcast due to snow on the garage roof.

In February 2010, I called Dish Network and they would give us a $15.00 a month discount for 12 months for switching with them and we got WPIX and WWOR so we were able to watch The new additional 4th hour even though at the last minute, WGN broke their promise to us all, and didn't broadcast the WPIX Yule Log, we were still able to watch it on WPIX.

I've called and emailed all our local stations and a coupe of them are competitors on Antenna TV as WGRZ Channel 2  carries Retro Television on digital 2-3 over the air.  Channels 4 and 23 WIVB and WNLO are owned by Lin Broadcasting which is a competitor of Tribune.  Channel 67 WNGS carries THIS TV which is a competitor or Antenna TV.

Channel 7 WKBW won't give us Antenna TV

Channel 17 WNED is our PBS affiliate.

Channel 26 WNYB is TCT and they carry TCT Family on Digital 26-3 which is sort of a competitor of Antenna TV as they show some of the classic TV Shows and Movies.

Channel 51 WPXJ is ION Television and we can only get it via Dish Network and not over the air as we can with some of out other local Digital TV Stations.  So that only leaves Channel 29 WUTV is FOX and Channel 49 WNYO is MyTV and they are owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group and they have been in contact with Antenna TV and they are not going to be carrying it as I guess they couldn't come to a financial agreement.  So Western NY is out of luck.  Dish Network has no plans of giving us Antenna TV as a new channel and they do not have to give us the sub-channels of our local channels.

I don't know if Time Warner has any plans of giving their customers Antenna TV and I don't know if DirecTV has any plans either.  But if you wanted to go with Dish Network, you could get WPIX just not in HD  But that could change as they are moving people on the East from the 61.5 110 1 119 orbital locations to the 61.5 72 and 77 orbital locations and they are changing out all the dishes.  They call it the Eastern Arc Upgrade and it is done for free.  They are keeping the 110 and 119 orbital locations for the West Coast.

They are doing this because there are too many HD channels now and with each satellite having only a certain number of transponders, they move the East Coast or Eastern States to the 72 and 77 locations so that they can free up transponders and give other Cities more HD Channels as some Cities have more than 10 local stations broadcasting in HD but with everyone on the East and West on the 110 and 119 they just couldn't offer every customer their local channels in HD because of all the other channels that are in HD too that everyone get.  CNN and The Weather Channel are just 2 channels but of course there are several more that everyone gets so now they have more transponders so they can offer more channels.

But even if I wanted to tell Dish Network that I moved to NYC and gave them a phone # and address that I moved to.  (Lets say it was a friend who was already a Dish Network Customer and they added my to their account, I wouldn't be able to get WPIX in HD because physically I am in Western NY and WPIX is a SPOTBEAM and the NYC SPOTBEAM doesn't reach Buffalo.

So my best suggestion is to look into Dish Network and they do offer WPIX for $2.00 a month for individual Super Stations that I mentioned above or you can get the entire package.  It used to be $6.00 a month, but they raised their rates recently and we don't subscribe to any Premium channels, but get their America's Top 250 Package and we get our locals and WPIX and WWOR and we have an HD Dual tuner DVR so our whole bill with taxes comes to about $87.00 a month and we don't do any VOD or PPV.  We are also getting Starz for free for a year because they raised our monthly rate $5.00 a month.  At least you could get WPIX just not in HD.

I hope this is helpful to you but I don't believe Western NY will be getting Antenna TV any time soon.  At least over the air with a Digital tuner or Digital to Analog converter box and external antenna or on Dish Network.  Again I can't answer for Time Warner, DirecTV except about WPIX.   Or even FIOS.  But FIOS doesn't offer WPIX.  Buffalo can't get FIOS TV but can get FIOS Phone and Internet,  but Tonawanda, West Seneca, Lackawanna and Cheektowaga all have FIOS TV and their channel line-up doesn't have WPIX available.

I wanted to add that not only did I call and email all our local stations, but also called and emailed their Parent Companies and none of them will give us Antenna TV.

Thank-you Susan for the detailed note.....great information, except that I have TWC and probably won't switch. Was just curious about any other experience with TWC (Monroe County)......but would think that much of the non-local programming would be identical.  Not going to switch carriers to find the Yule Log....just thought it would be fun to have.  Appreciate the info.

You're quite welcome.

I know I didn't want to switch from DirecTV, but financially at the time saving $15.00 a month for a year was helpful but we lost some channels on DirecTV that we would have to pay extra for to get on Dish Network, but it's worth it just for WPIX.
