Just found this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vf-4lCsLlpg The clip does not contain any of the music that we have all come to look forward to each year, but the clip does show our yule log burning bright for about 2 minutes. Hope you all enjoy!

Thanks Trace. We previously discussed this clip and the YouTube.com website on the board.

Here's a link to it:

Chip, I tried to find the post from a few weeks ago about the Youtube "Fake" but the only thread that shows "YouTube" is this one, and one that says "Only can be access by Moderator"

My question is, if by chance that the original footage might still be in Mr. Cooper's personal archives, etc., might the original soundtrack be there too? or is the original soundtrack gone forever?

Also, the link for your post before mine, brings me back to the main message board page, and not any particular posts.

Susan,

It's anyone's guess as to what Kay Cooper actually has in her home -- if anything. Someday when she sifts through her husband's things, perhaps she'll find the original 1966 footage. In the meantime, the only thing that survives is the picture below. As you can see, the original Gracie Mansion fireplace does not compare in any way whatsoever to the classic and legendary 1970 California re-shoot fireplace. That doll on the mantel of the original Gracie Mansion fireplace was absolutely hideous and the fire was not near as grand as the 1970 re-shoot.

Hi Chip,

Yes indeed the doll is hideous lol.  The stockings look different too, but that could be because they aren't in color.  I thought they tried to get the same type of fireplace for the re-shoot, but it isn't even close.  The California fireplace is better in a lot of ways.  The only thing to me that looks the same is the Andirons.

Oh well, it would be interesting if the original soundtrack somehow survived too, though I know it wouldn't have all the wonderful songs that we have for it now.

Yes, the andirons do look the same, but if you look closely at their feet you can see the difference. Nothing from the original 1966 Gracie Mansion shoot was used in the 1970 California re-shoot, including the stockings. As for the original soundtrack, and the variations of it that were used up to 1972, they were all inferior to the definitive and classic soundtrack that was created in 1973 and aired for duration of the program's run until 1989. That's why I based my 2006 audio restoration of the soundtrack on the 1973 model. There are only two pre-1973 songs that I added back to the program: David Rose's The Christmas Tree (which I added back to the program as a bonus track in my 2006 audio restoration), and Mantovani's Adeste Fideles (which I restored back to the program this year when I added my new 4th hour).

Chip,

I vaguely remember hearing during at least one of the broadcasts, can't remember if it was before the 1970 re-shoot that the Yule Log was being filmed from beautiful Gracie Mansion.  It was during one of the breaks when the camera pans in and out.  This wasn't anything from the special "A Log's Life" but during an actual broadcast of the WPIX Yule Log.   Am I mistaken or am I remembering correctly?  Thanks.

Susan,

Every year the hourly and half-hourly station ID announcements always had the reference to Gracie Mansion as being the fireplace on your screen. However, even after WPIX re-shot the Yule Log footage in California in 1970, they continued the reference to Gracie Mansion; thereby making those hourly and half-hourly announcements a longstanding anomaly on the program for years -- in fact, right up until the late '70s.

For some reason, WPIX never removed the reference from the announcements, giving the false impression that the fireplace was from Gracie Mansion. I speculate it was because they weren’t so keen on folks knowing that the Yule Log was re-shot in California. It wasn't until almost a decade after the 1970 re-shoot that the station ID announcements no longer made the reference to Gracie Mansion.

Thanks Chip,

Glad to know that my memory is starting to work again lol,  With all that the Yule Log means to people, I don't think it would've made much of a difference with the viewers.
