Notice he says a copy of The Yule Log was "found." I wonder if there could be any more jewels in there - perhaps some Zacherle tapes?

Those two Yule Log 35 millimeter film reels that were found in the vault a few weeks ago are the masters of the program as it aired in the mid to late 1980s after it had been chopped down to a paltry 2 hours. It is not the original 1966 footage, which was shot on 16 millimeter film; nor is it the classic 3-hour program that aired up until 1981.

I've received many private emails via the main website about this and it's a shame that folks were led to believe that this was some great "find." It isn't.

This really shouldn't have been hyped as a "long lost hidden vault" or "the secret room that time forgot" as it was only last accessed just about a dozen years ago.

Oh that would have been a wonderful Christmas gift if the original 1966 Yule Log footage had shown up in that vault.  Too bad.  I'm thinking there are probably more of these "vaults" scattered around, one of them being in Kay Cooper's home.  I have a feeling there are some more great pictures and other treasures in her possession.  The problem is that she is very old now and could quite literally die any day.
Hey Chip,

Are you still in contact with Kay and/or her family?  I recall a thread where you mentioned that she may one day go through Bill's old stuff (or something like that).  Have you heard anything about this lately?  I feel like we are running out of time and some priceless stuff could get lost forever.  I shutter to think that some of it could end up in a landfill.

I thought the whereabouts of the original footage was known, but it had deteriorated so badly that any attempt of restoration was impossible?

Patrick:

Kay is only 71. She was actually 20 years younger than husband Bill.

For those new to the message board and not familiar with Bill Cooper, he was the legendary WPIX producer who produced the Yule Log. (Click here to see pictures of Bill and the WPIX technical crew filming the now classic and legendary 35 millimeter re-shoot footage in California in August of 1970.)

Kay is still working today and very active in a number of causes. And although she hasn't done very much acting lately, she is still an active member of the Screen Actors Guild. By the way, in case you didn't know, Kay's stage name is Kay Arnold (the "Arnold" being her maiden name). She has acted on the Broadway stage (in numerous plays) as well as on television (namely in TV soap operas as well as in a couple of appearances on the Roseanne show). She also had a bit part in the 1996 motion picture, Carpool. Also, in case you didn't know, she is the aunt of Tom Arnold and ex-aunt-in-law of Roseanne Arnold (who now, after the divorce, once again goes by her original name of Roseanne Barr).

I just talked to Kay and she is doing just fine. And no, she still has not had any luck in finding the original 16 millimeter 1966 Yule Log footage among Bill's things. But don't worry, it's slow work, but she is still looking!

Chris:

No, that is not correct. The original 16 millimeter 1966 Yule Log footage has never been found. We have been looking for it for years. However, Kay still thinks it's among Bill's possessions somewhere in their house. Bill passed away in 1987, by the way.

But yes, since it was only a 17-second loop shot on 16 millimeter film, it had become seriously worn by 1970; hence, the reason for the 1970 re-shoot on 35 millimeter film that I mentioned above. This, among other things, is mentioned in the FAQ section on my main Yule Log website, click here.
