I made my annual Christmas visit to Rockefeller Center this past Saturday and was treated to a Tuba Christmas concert on the ice rink.  No joke, over 500 tubas playing Christmas carols!  I had no idea they would be there.  I happened to be standing next to someone whose kids were playing in the tuba orchestra!  The players were anywhere in age from 8 to 80.

Even though I wasn't attending the Radio City Christmas Spectacular (I'd better get back there soon!), I was treated to quite a sideshow nonetheless.  I had a nice bus trip from NJ, than got stuck for 30 minutes at the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel.  When we finally made it into Manhattan, everyone on the bus gave the driver a well-deserved round of applause.

Every year when I come to Rockefeller Center, I have lunch at Dean and De Luca's.  I was having my lunch facing the window across from NBC News when three attractive young women dressed as Santa's elves came strutting down the street!  Maybe they were Rockette understudies or wannabees!

Over on the concourse was another take on Santa's elves - dressed in drag!  People were actually taking pictures with them!  Could only happen in Manhattan!  I've been coming to Rockefeller Center for many years and have never seen anything like that!

Also I never saw so many Santa impersonators!  There even was one wearing a Santa suit with the Playboy logo and the letters PLAYBOY across the back!  Again, only in Manhattan!

Rockefeller Center at this time of year is a very popular destination for marriage proposals.  One proposal took place at the center of the ice rink as it was being cleared of skaters just before the Tuba Concert.  Everyone on the concourse could see the young man drop to one knee as he presented the ring to his girlfriend.  Of course, she accepted and everyone cheered.  They sure had everyone's attention!  Another took place during the concert, right next to the ice rink.  They didn't get the ovation as everyone was focused on the concert.  I'll be they planned it that way.  I spotted them when someone pointed them out to me.  I wish both of those couples many years of happiness and many Christmases together!

I think more people are coming to Manhattan at the holidays than ever before, despite the economy.  I believe people need Christmas, no matter what's happening in the world.

How's that for a Christmas visit to Rockefeller Center!
