WPIX announced a new manager, Eric Meyoritz who was at the Tribune station in Washington DC.  Also, any word if WGN America is going to run Yule Log this Christmas?

Most importantly, will WPIX be showing it??  You never know what new management might do.  I sent a thank you note to Betty Ellen after she was dismissed, and she felt the "Log" was safe, but we should never take anything for granted.

RE:New Manager at WPIX
(Date Posted:09/13/2010 23:43)

I wish I could say different, but absolutely nothing has yet been decided regarding this year's programming of the Yule Log -- nothing.

As I have said previously on the message board, the odds are great that the Yule Log will indeed be shown as normal this year despite the absence of Betty Ellen Berlamino, as the program has consistently done so well in the ratings and also because of its place in the history of WPIX-TV. But because the program is shown commercial-free, in today's tight economy nothing is a given nor should be taken for granted. That's why I have been encouraging everyone on this message board to contact the station and make your voices heard -- especially at this critical juncture when there has been a change in management at the top.

Let me remind everyone again what happened in 1990 when Michael Eigner came in as the newly appointed station chief: he promptly cancelled the program because he felt it was too much of a drain on station resources -- and that was in an economy that was light-years better than it is now. Well, as anyone who is a fan of the program knows, it took us 11 years to get the show back on the air. In fact, that's how this very website was born -- as a vehicle to coordinate efforts to lobby the station to do the right thing and restore the program to its rightful place on the air.

While it's true that history has a way of repeating itself, and that mankind has a lamentable way of making the same mistakes twice, I am determined that in this case it will not happen here. So therefore I implore you all not to become complacent and to do your part by contacting the station by either phone, fax, email or snail mail and make your voices heard. If indifference is allowed to prevail and the station does not receive this critical feedback from the viewers, the show might eventually go to pot. And if that happens, after all the hard work that Joe Malzone and I have done all these years on behalf of the program and this website, needless to say, I will not be a happy camper.

As all you board members already know, I sent a group email out last night providing contact information for WGN America (our national feed) to lobby the station to air the entire 4-hour presentation this year. So let me reiterate that again here in this post, and also encourage all of you to contact your local Tribune affiliates as well -- including all of you here in New York with regard to WPIX. Don't let me down.

By the way, most of the affiliates, including WPIX and WGN, will be completing their holiday program schedules in the next few weeks. As soon as I begin receiving broadcast times, I will immediately post them in the Yule Log Broadcast & Schedule Information section here on the message board.

I just called WPIX but they have an automated phone system. Either you can speak directly to the News Room, Leave a message for Help Me Howard, or if you are experiencing technical difficulties you can leave a message.  And the last option was to leave a general comment about the station programming.

I basically asked them to please, please air The Yule Log this year as I have been watching it since 1966 and would miss it very much as would a lot of other fans.

One voice can't do much, but if we all get together on this, I'm sure we can pull if off.

Unfortunately, our local CW affiliate isn't a Tribune Owned Station but instead owned by LIN Broadcasting.  But I am able to get WPIX via Dish Network just not in HD and even though we get WGN America, in HD, a majority of their programming doesn't fill out the screen.  All that I've really seen in HD on WGN America is their newscasts.  I don't watch the station that much, but had to depend on them to see The WPIX Yule Log.  But now I will be able to watch it on WPIX if they broadcast it this year, it just wont be in HD.  But just because it's on WPIX makes all the difference in the world.

I got a confirmation that WGN America will air it and WPIX will air it.  That came from a person I spoke with at Tribune corporate offices in Chicago.  WGN America said yes but not sure of the 4th hour and when I asked about WPIX I got a clear yes, the exact response was "of course they are".  The Yule Log lives another year.  WGN America is now airing a bunch of new programming all in Hi-Def, gotta imagine the Yule Log will be in Hi-Def as well.  WGN America is very different from what it used to be.

Susan
:

Live operators are on duty at WPIX between 9am and 5pm. However, if the lines are very busy, it is hit or miss as far as reaching one; otherwise you will get the automated message. But if you keep trying, you will eventually get through. I have internal numbers that I use when I call the station, but they are proprietary and I'm not at liberty to give them out. Thanks for doing you part, I appreciate it.

Garrett
:

First, with regard to WGN America, the issue is not whether they will air the program this year, as they have already committed to doing so. The issue is whether they will show it for the full 4 hours. I will forward to you the email that I sent to board members on September 13 just prior to you becoming a member. It gives instructions of how to contact the station to petition for this. By the way (and this is very important), t
he station has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy for quite some time now and there are rumors that a takeover might be imminent, with chairmen Sam Zell being replaced by former Disney chief Michael Eisner. If such a thing happens, there is no telling what might happen with regard to station programming -- especially 3 months down the line at Christmas. So again I caution not to become complacent; I really can't stress that enough.

Second, with regard to WPIX, I am in direct contact with the station and I can tell you categorically that while they have every intention of broadcasting the program this year, the fact is that the final decision will ultimately be made by no one else but newly appointed station chief Eric Meyrowitz -- period. And while I have all my contacts at the station lined up to advocate for the program's return, it is Eric alone who will make the final decision.

So I'll say it again just one more time to everyone: please do not become complacent and do you part to make your voices heard.

You're welcome Chip,

Maybe I will try calling again and hope to get to speak to someone.

I didn't know that WGN/WGN America was in Chapter 11.  It seems like Disney is in the TV Network buying business these days.  They are purchasing or may have already purchased SoapNet.

They've come a long way since Walt started the company and made a lot of changes that Walt probably wouldn't approve of, but it's a sign of the times.  They used to show full movies without commercials, especially the Disney Classics as well s the original Mickey Mouse Club.  Now it's a lot of things like Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zach and Cody or The Suite Life on Deck,  Phineas and Ferb, Wizards of Waverly Place, just to name a few.

I'm wondering it it would also help to ask WPIX on their Facebook page if they will broadcast The Yule Log this year?

On a slightly different note, have you heard anything on whether or not Kay Cooper has gone through her husbands stuff and found the original footage from the 1966 shoot?  I vaguely remember something that there might be a possibility that the footage may still exist.

Susan,

Just to clarify, it's not the Disney corporation that is rumored to possibly be taking over Tribune Broadcasting, but rather former Disney chief Michael Eisner. Again, whether this will happen or not remains to be seen.

And yes, it would be fine to contact WPIX via their Facebook page. But better yet, I suggest that you contact them via their website, Click here. By the way, don't forget to stress that you want them to air the entire 4-hour presentation.

And finally, with regard to Kay Cooper, she continues to look through her late husband's possessions as she has time, but to this point, she still has not been able to locate the original 1966 16 mm Yule Log footage. If she ever does, I'll be the first to know and, of course, I'll post it here on the message board.

RE:New Manager at WPIX

Thanks for the clarifying about WGN Chip,

I have to learn to read things more carefully.

I believe I did use the web form to contact WPIX and also called their phone number.  The web form looks familiar to me, but it may be that I contacted them about a post on Facebook about the 9/11 memorials and there was this ignorant person swearing and telling everyone to get over it and move on and have closure.

This in turn caused more anger and swearing.  The more I think about it, it was about the Facebook post and I was asking them if they moderate them and can delete the post with swearing and stuff (I believe it worked as I can't find the post and I commented on it myself.)

My comment was that there are hundreds of families that can't have any closure because their loved ones remains have never been found or what has been found hasn't been able to be identified so these people can't possibly have closure.  I even mentioned to the ignorant person very politely I might add,  that I hope he never loses a loved one and they can't identify the remains and he doesn't have to go through the pain of what these families are still going through.  To my knowledge, I didn't have any friends or relatives in the Twin Towers, but I am still hurting myself.  Not just because of the Twin Towers being gone but also for the families who lost their loved ones that day.

He commented on several other posts that WPIX had done.  One in particular was when they were asking where they were when the first plane hit the Twin Towers and he said he was home in bed and couldn't care what happened then.

Oh well, I will contact them via the web form and ask them to please broadcast the 4 hour Yule Log this year.

Thanks again for clarifying about WGN and former Disney chief Michael Eisner.
