Did you get any info on PIX yet Joe?? You said you had a tape from 1971 or 72 from somebody who had recorded it from the radio that year, was that true, and did you find out all those songs that were not on the current yule log?? And what about all those splices, and cuts in the film, it seems to start a song in the middle and cut right out, poor editiing job by somebody(.

On WGN Superstation 9 they did a very good job of The Yule Log -no sudden jump cuts - but no announcer. Great Job WGN! I LOVE THIS SITE! Michael Boyce

You probably didn't realize this Michael, but this post you replied to was made by camaroz-28 last year. Since I believe you and I are about the same age, I dare say to you that this is what happens when you get to be our age buddy! I have a good ophthalmologist I can refer you to.

Oh well, not to fret. The upshot of this is that now that you posted a reply, and providing he subscribed to the topic, perhaps he'll rejoin us here on the board.

I also noticed that Joe never responded to his question, and since I cover for Joe if he's too busy to respond to a directly asked question, I'm not so proud to say that I missed it myself.

Oh well, to quote the great poet Robert Burns: "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry." So, if you're out there camster, sorry.

So let me get to it right now, albeit 10 months late:

1) The tape you are referring to is an audiotape of the 1971 Yule Log presentation, but it's only a partial.

2) What we do know, unequivocally, is every song that was played on the program from 1973 on, when the music soundtrack was revamped and improved creating what I refer to as the "classic" program that ran in various forms until 1989, and then beginning again in 2001.

3) Yes, the program which began airing in 2001, which parenthetically, is a 2-hour abridged version of the "classic" 3-hour program (that in the last few years has been shown back-to-back for a total of 4 hours), is not only missing an hour of original music, but has been sliced, diced, chopped, and even pureed. To say as you did that it was a poor editing job, is being a little euphemistic, to say the least. In fact, it was perfectly pathetic.

4) As for this year's 40th anniversary broadcast, as I said in an earlier post, we are not ready to make the announcement yet as we are waiting for the go ahead from WPIX. In the mean time, as I said before, stay tuned and keep checking the website -- it will be coming very soon, and believe me, it's a big one. However, let me reiterate that the one thing I will proudly say is that this all happened due to the sole and exclusive efforts of Joe and I working as a team with WPIX to make it possible, so you have us to thank.

Guys--let me be the first to say thanks for your efforts.  I have been a log fan since I was a kid & had been lamenting it's loss prior to my finding this site.  You both have done a truly amazing job!

Thank you!

I hope that WPIX gives you two the go ahead to bring back all the music restored to the Yule Log.  I look forward to any updates here about this. I can't wait until this Christmas.

Our work on this project for WPIX has concluded. All that is left now is our official announcement, which we will make after the go-ahead from the station.

All I can say is that everyone will be very pleased with the two things we will announce exclusively here first on the Yule Log.com.

I know the anticipation and suspense is killing everyone, but please have patience -- All good things are worth waiting for, and in this case that's no small understatement!

I can hardly wait myself.  I hope that it will have the music in the original order too.  I remember watching the first show on our black and white tv on Christmas Eve in 1966, though I don't remember the the order of the music they played.  I was only 8 lol.  It would be nice to see it  with all the original music.

Michael Boyce previously inquired on August 25,2006 about the original music of the Yule Log and whether anyone had a copy of one of the original 1960's broadcasts.

Here's the gist of how I responded to his inquiry:

If you had a copy of any of the Yule Log presentations from the 1960's, you would be sadly disappointed.

First of all, the iconic and classic Yule Log fireplace that we are all familiar with today was actually shot and aired for the first time in 1970. It replaced the original and inferior Gracie Mansion fireplace footage that was shot in 1966 and aired until 1969. So if ever one day you could see one of the original 60's broadcast from 1966 through 1969, it would look quite different from what you are familiar with today.

Second, it would also sound quite different as well, and again not near as good as to what we would come to know later -- beginning in 1973 when the musical content of the program was revamped and improved. You see, prior to 1973, the program consisted of fewer musical artists, but multiple songs by those same artists. That's how they filled in the time. Moreover, some of the songs that aired in these years were not in keeping with the standard that was set in 1973 with the advent of what I refer to as the "classic" program.

The revised program that began airing in 1973 was more eclectic, had a much better balance, and was a superior blend because of the artists and songs that were added to the bulk of the great program that already existed. It is this definitive program that aired for the duration, and consequently bulk, of the Yule Log's run on WPIX TV. It is also the version that the great majority of people today are familiar with.

Based on my knowledge of the musical content of these early programs from audio tape that I have, and from advertisements WPIX used to promote them where they listed partial discographies, I can tell you unequivocally that these presentations were indeed musically inferior to the revamped "classic" program that aired in different forms for 17 years from1973-1989. It is also this version that WPIX formerly aired in an abridged form between 2001-2005.

When Fred Thrower and WPIX revamped the musical content in 1973, believe me kids; they really struck gold -- like Yukon Cornelius. It is indeed the quintessential Christmas music soundtrack, and has set the standard for all others. As a Christmas music collector and connoisseur, I am eternally grateful to Mr. Thrower and all those at WPIX who had a hand in creating this wonderful program and forever enriching my Christmas season.

Thanks for your post Rob as it gives me the opportunity to be able to finally announce to everyone that the wait is almost over; WPIX has finally given us the go-ahead to make the long awaited announcement, which parenthetically, will be exclusively here first on the Yule Log.com website

While our grand announcement is being prepared, along with the grand unveiling of the new Yule Log.com website, the message board and the website itself will brought down and temporarily suspended.

Can you feel the anticipation and excitement in the air

I speak for Joe as well when I say that this is the proudest thing that we have done in our entire lives. A legacy we can leave for our family, friends and the millions of people who love this endearing program.

Joe's late mother was a big fan of the show as well, and I know she's looking down on us and giving us a big wink and a smile.

Stay tuned
