Just wanted to let everyone know that Jo Stafford passed away on Wednesday of Congestive Heart Failure.  I just heard it on the radio today.  She was 90 years old.

Though she didn't have any songs on Thw WPIX Yule Log, she did record Christmas music.  She will be missed.

Yes Susan, it's very sad news. It's so heartbreaking to see all these great legends gradually leaving us one-by-one.

Jo Stafford was known as the lady with the perfect pitch. All three of her holiday albums are in the 1st Tier of my "Top Play" (albums 1-125 in my collection). She and her husband (the late conductor/arranger Paul Weston) made a great team together.

In recent years, her son, Tim Weston, has taken an active role in getting his mother's music reissued on CD; including the two holiday albums she did for Columbia Records in the 1950s: "Happy Holiday" (1955) and "Ski Trails" (1956). For those who might not be aware, the tracks from these two LP's were released in 1999 on the compilation CD, "Happy Holidays: I Love The Winter Weather," which was produced by Tim Weston himself.

Her third holiday album, "The Joyful Season," which was originally released by Capitol Records in 1964, was reissued on CD in 2005 by DRG Records. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6939176 Included on this CD are 5 bonus tracks, including two 5-song medleys she did with frequent collaborator, Gordon MacRae. I've actually read several articles online that claim that these two medleys with Mr. MacRae were previously unreleased; and this is a prime example of where I emphatically remind people NOT to believe everything you read -- unless that is, yours truly wrote it. The fact is that both of these medleys were previously released on an album that was distributed exclusively by Sears called "Silent Night, Holy Night." On the LP are 2 songs by Ms. Stafford, 1 song by Mr. MacRae and 3 duets of the two together, including the two aforementioned 5-song medleys. This album resides in the 2nd Tier of my "Top Play" (albums 126-250 in my collection). It's a pretty rare LP to find, especially in good condition; however, there is currently a mint mono copy on eBay as a "Buy Now" for $25. If anyone is interested in this LP, I suggest you move quickly as it won't last long. http://cgi.ebay.com/JO-STAFFORD-GORDON-MACRAE-SILENT-NIGHT-Christmas-LP_W0QQitemZ350057850992QQihZ022QQcategoryZ306QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247

Some children of these legendary artists take an avid interest in promoting their parent's careers and legacies, and others clearly do not. In addition to Tim Weston, another good example of children who have taken an active role on behalf of a parent are the Sinatra children (Nancy, Tina and Frank, Jr.), who have worked very hard to promote their father's legacy by getting various CD's and videos released.

However, on the other side of the equation, when I spoke to Nathaniel Crosby the other day, I found no such evidence. In fact, when I expressed my indignation at MCA/Universal for changing the title and artwork of his father's classic and legendary LP, "Merry Christmas," he seemed to be somewhat indifferent. What's more, he incorrectly said that he and his siblings did 11 straight TV Christmas specials with their father; the truth is that from 1966-1977 they actually did 11 out of 12 (they did not appear on the 1969 special). In his defense though, Nathaniel was born quite late in his father's career; Bing was 58 when he was born and was easily old enough to be his grandfather -- so there is quite a cultural as well as generational divide. In addition, when his father died in 1977, he was only 15 (2 weeks shy of his 16th birthday). But most importantly, it's only fair to note that it is his mother, Kathryn Crosby, who exclusively controls all the rights to Bing's name, likeness and image -- as well as all the rights to his recordings. When Nathaniel and his siblings, Harry and Mary Frances, eventually inherit the Crosby estate from their mother, perhaps then they will take a more active role in the promotion of their father's legacy. Let's hope.

Hi Chip,

Wow, that is a lot of new infomation.  One of the radio stations I listen to is CHWO AM740  They are a prety powerful station and can be heard, basically in every state East of the Mississippi River  Mostly in the evening.  I fall asleep listening to them and wake up in the morning to them also.

They also have a streaming station online.  AM740.CA  The play a lot of the old standards, Big Band etc as well as some current songs.  They play a lot of Jo Starrord's Songs.

Great radio station, Susan.

That's the first time I've heard the Anita Kerr Singers on the radio since the days of the great Easy 93, WPAT.

I'll definitely bookmark it. Thanks for the tip.

Hi Chip,

You're most welcome.  I found this station by accident.  We use to have a ''Music Of Your Life'' station but they changed their format.  Then one night I was scanning through the stations and heard a ''Gunsmoke'' episode so I kept the station on and heard a lot of Big Band and so on and then I heard a promo that they had an online station.

They they play an Elvis Presley song at least once an hour.  On Sunday, they even have a Scottish DJ who plays music by Scottish artists.

I pretty much keep the car radio tune to 740 on the am dial. and often listen to the station online while I'm doing other things online.
