One can only hope Joe Van Horn will do as well as Gordon Anderson.

Yes, it's quite sad and I will certainly miss Gordon. However, I'm hoping that Joe will get Collectors' Choice Music back to the business of reissuing on CD classic Christmas LPs in their entirety with their original artwork, rather than these compilations/anthologies that Gordon seemed to develop a penchant for in his last days at CCM.

I had a very nice conversation today with the person who will be taking over Gordon Anderson's specific duties regarding future exclusive Collectors' Choice Music CD releases. It is actually not Joe Van Horn who will have this key responsibility, but another gentleman that I am not at liberty to divulge here right now. Stay tuned; more to come later.

Anyway, we had a very nice conversation about the upcoming 2011 Christmas season and my recommendations for future CCM Christmas LP on CD exclusives. I am looking forward to the real possibility there will be some great classic Christmas LPs that will finally be released on CD in 2011. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

For now, anyone who wishes to send their list of desired LPs for release on CD by CCM (Christmas or otherwise), just send them to the main email address of mcatalog@ccmusic.com. Or if you'd like, you can mail them to P.O. Box 1347, Ottawa, Il. 61350.

Hi Chip,

Just wanted to follow up on this...should we still continue to send requests for LPs to be released on CD to the general Collector's Choice email address or did you happen to have a direct email address to Mr. Castellana that we could use?   Thanks!

I do have a direct email address for Gabby, but I'll have to contact him and ask if it's alright to give it out to the general public.

Unfortunately this post brings sad news. I spoke today to Gabby Castellana (GM/VP of Super D/Collectors' Choice Music), and he told me that there are currently no plans this year to release any exclusive Christmas CD releases. In addition, there are also no current plans to reprint/reissue the exclusive Perry Como Christmas CD compilation, which was just released for the first time only last year.

For me personally, let me just say that this is the very thing that I had mentioned in the past on the message board and had feared: that the day would come when the program for releasing these CD exclusives would be terminated. I knew that the window of opportunity to get these classic Christmas albums back in print was limited, which is why I fought so hard these last several years to make it happen. I'm just so thankful that during this period I was able to score a big one by securing the release of one of the all-time greatest: Mantovani's 1958 LP, Christmas Carols (Click here). Thankfully, according to Gabby, they will continue to print this CD in the future.

And while Gabby didn't completely close the door on any future exclusive CD releases, in my estimation it is unlikely that they will revive the program, as an educated guess on my part would be that the combination of the lagging economy, as well as the decline in CD sales (in favor of online downloads), would preclude this eventuality.

As always, I will keep everyone posted on any updates, changes or developments.

You know, I realize that the bean counters have to crunch the numbers and figure out whether or not it is worth the money invested to reissue these Christmas albums on CD that we here cherish and hold dear . . .

. . . but this just kind of feels like a shot to the gut.  Collectors' Choice Music is just about the last bastion of hope for releasing of out of the way albums that no one else would touch.  I keep hearing things like "Christmas music is seasonal" and "declining CD sales," "downloaded music," etc.  I do get all of that.  I just don't like it.

I for one am not a fan of buying my music in mp3 or AAC format unless I cannot find it any other way.  I'll take a CD and rip my own mp3 files for portability, but I still want that CD (or wave file ripped from an LP) in all of its uncompressed glory.  I may need compressed music files to haul around in my iPod, but I don't need or want them for my home stereo listening pleasure.  I want every last ounce of music that is available to me, without compression and without artifacts.

In light of that, there seems to be many others out there that are in agreement with me.  After all, how do you justify a company spending resources on pressing new vinyl albums in today's market if no one cares about whether their music is in mp3 or AAC format?  How do you justify recording music in high resolution formats that not very many folks could play on their computers, let alone on their stereo systems?  Yet there are markets for just these types of music even though the number of folks who purchase them are extremely small compared to the rest of the music buying public.

Given that, why can we not get someone to cater to the likes of us, the Christmas music aficionados?

Collectors' Choice Music was just that company.  At least they were in spite of the fact that their Christmas album releases on CD were limited at best.  I feel like a dog waiting at the table for a few crumbs to be tossed my way, only to find out that it wasn't worth someones effort to brush those crumbs onto the floor.

Sorry Perry; I got so wrapped up in answering your LP questions on the other thread that I failed to comment on your thoughts here.

I totally agree; I am not a fan of music downloads either. First we lost the LP, and now sometime in the near future, we'll probably lose the CD. And yes, Collectors' Choice Music was indeed our last great hope for future Christmas LP releases on CD.

Unfortunately, the mission of the new company that took CCM over (Super D) is totally different than that of the old owner (Infinity Resources). Super D's main target in its purchase of Infinity Resources was to acquire the Deep Discount.com website and get stronger foothold in the DVD market. I really don't think forging ahead with the Collectors' Choice Music record label of exclusive CD reissue releases is really something that they have any real interest in doing.

I wonder if there are any other companies out there that would do this, such as Collectables Records (oldies.com) or the company which released the Johnny Douglas/Living Strings collection last year.

As much as we all on here hate to see this happen, we probably knew it was inevitable, especially considering the direction of CD sales generally, let alone the profitability of such a niche product as classic Christmas music from 40-50 years ago.

Thanks to this message board, it was a treat for me to discover the availability of Buckingham Strings music in a downloadable format, which I took advantage of. To be sure, I would miss the artwork and all, but if I were to see the Jack Halloran Singers or Hugo & Luigi's Children's Chorus available for download, I wouldn't hesitate making the purchase. Since it's next to impossible finding this kind of music to even download, now I'm wondering if there's a better chance of getting record companies to go this route rather than releasing CDs. Any thoughts, even though I know you all aren't fans of mp3's?

No go with either Collectables Records or Dulcima Records, Jim.

First, regarding Collectables Records, A&R chief Mike Stefanic has told me that they generally don't reissue Christmas material because of its limited marketing potential (being a seasonal item). I successfully worked with Mike in the past in getting regular music by Percy Faith reissued on CD, in particular his 1971 LP, I Think I Love You. But again, they are extremely reticent when it comes to holiday/seasonal fare.

As for Dulcima Records, owner Norma Camby, with whom I am acquainted, generally releases material her father, Johnny Douglas, recorded. That's why she reissued the three Living Strings/Living Voices Christmas albums in 2009. Those three albums, by the way, were all produced by my good friend, the legendary RCA Records producer Ethel Gabriel, and she was thrilled that these albums were finally released on CD.

Oh, and just in case anyone is wondering about Dutton-Vocalion Records; I've already spoken to A&R chief Oliver Lomax about this, and unfortunately, like Collectables Records, they also generally don't reissue Christmas material because of its limited marketing potential. The Mantovani and Ronnie Aldrich Christmas CDs they released in the past were two rare exceptions.

As for mp3 music downloads, I agree that it's better than offering nothing at all. At least this way the music will still in some way be available to the general public.

Thanks for this information, Chip.  It's rather surprising how these companies stay away from [good] Christmas product when it seems every contemporary artist today puts out a Christmas CD.  I'm talking about the Mariah Carey - Barry Manilow - American Idol artist type stuff.  Personally, I call it cashing in to make a quick buck... most of it is just plain awful to me.

Hey Chip, what about Gordon's new Real Gone Music label? Any possibilities there?

I don't know either, Chip.

I'd probably be feeling like an idiot, if I wasn't too happy to care thanks to that announcement!
