I guess this is kind of relevant since it's NY and it's music, both of which are important to us Yule Log fans.  But can you believe WNEW-FM has undergone ANOTHER format/image change????  And Infinity chose WCBS over this to "hi-Jack"?!!?  2W2T...What Were They Thinking?!!!?

Nothing more needs to be said about the latest format flip by CBS Radio.  Any wonder why Sirius now boasts 6 million subs and XM has about 8 million?  Those are 14 million subscribers that aren't returning to FM radio.  That represents lots of lost ad revenue.

I'm a Sirius subscriber and this past holiday season, they had three channels of Christmas music.  Starlite became Holiday and played a potpurri of popular Christmas music from the past six decades.  Roadhouse became Country Christmas.  New this year was Classical Christmas on Sirius Pops.  Very interesting choices.  Though I mostly listened to Holiday, I found myself spending time checking out Country and Classical.  All of it was commercial-free.

Also, I love that "no more old songs" campaign...so long as you're being hip and edgy, it doesn't matter if they are trying to alienate the people who, you know, LIKE older songs, I guess.  Then again, look at Jack's grating catchphrase, "not caring what the listeners want" or whatever it is.

Actually, Fresh 102.7's ads boast that their station doesn't play "too many tired old songs". What upsets me is that in their TV ads they think that the song, "You Light Up My Life" by Debby Boone is considered "tired" and "old". I like that song ever since it came out in 1977 and I have never found that tune to be "tired" nor "old" even though it was recorded 30 years ago. The problem with today's FM stations is that they are all contemporary (appealing to younger listeners from the teens up to the 20s) and they don't play that many oldies but goodies, especially from the 50s and the 60s. At least Lite FM 106.7 plays some 70s and 80s hits. I myself listen to Music Choice on Comcast digital cable. I enjoy their channels: 70s, 80s, Solid Gold Oldies (50s and 60s music), Soft Rock, Party Favorites and Showcase. The Showcase channel plays classic disco every other day. Unfortunately, it has to share that channel with old school rap which I don't listen to. During November and December, Music Choice's Sounds of the Seasons channel plays Christmas music which I enjoy listening to.

Either way I just see them as "dissing" vintage songs.  If we need less of one thing, it's people encouraging others that our past is worthless. Over here in NJ, I've gone over to AM radio...on WMTR 1250.  It is pretty much everything WCBS was and should never have stopped being.

Sometimes I wonder, "Who is doing the research for these radio companies?"
The reality of "free-radio" is that many of the people listening to it are of the demographic range that WOULD want to listen to an "oldies" format.
Many of those listening to "new" music are doing so through an MP3 player or by subscribing to a satellite service like Sirius or XM(or whatever they'll be called when they merge). For some silly reason the radio conglomerates continue to turn up their noses at classic music(unless your idea of classic is 7 Led Zeppelin songs per hour on 104 or 102.3). Apparently they have learned nothing from the recent format failures in the NY area. Here's hoping that somebody, in a position to do so, gets their act together soon.

Cheers,

Bob
