Dear Friends,

I have both bad news and good news regarding the national television coverage of the WPIX Yule Log.

First, the bad news:

I spoke with WGN programming president Sean Compton today and he informed me that regrettably they will not be able to broadcast the Yule Log as planned this year on their national cable/satellite station WGN America, as they cannot sustain the financial sacrifice of airing the program, which as all of you know, is shown commercial-free; however, it will still air as planned on their local station, WGN Channel 9 in Chicago.

This was a very difficult decision for Sean to make as he hated having to disappoint all the viewers, but they just couldn’t broadcast it this year given the current economic conditions -- coupled with the fact that Tribune Broadcasting is still in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

But now, the good news:

Beginning next year, for Christmas 2011, they plan on airing the Yule Log in its entirety (all 4 hours) on their new classic TV network, Antenna TV, which is set to debut on January 1, 2011. This new network, which is dedicated to the programming of classic TV shows, is a perfect fit for the Yule Log and a place this beloved classic program will now have a permanent new home.

For more on the soon to be launched Antenna Television Network, Click here.

In the meantime, for this year 2010, don’t forget there are still 15 Tribune Broadcasting affiliates across the country that will be airing the Yule Log; for the complete affiliate schedule, Click here.

So Chip, are you saying WGN American is now only going to carry 3 of the 4 hours of YuleLog, or are they are going to carry some stupid infomercial and NO YuleLog at all? Thanks.

Why doesn't he just reach out to any of the many businesses in the Chicago area that might be community minded that might be able to underwrite the cost of the timeslot - I find it hard to believe that not one firm would want to give the viewing public a Christmas gift of The Yule Log to the US!   Dunkin Donuts, Macy's, McDonald's BK, Kohl's, JC Penney, Toy's R Us, etc or Met Life, Sears etc    -  C'mon Sean Compton work the phones!!!!   All they need to do is say at the start of the program "The Yule Log is brought to you by Etc etc commercial free and as a Christmas gift"

This is greatly disappointing.  Every year I try to get a recording of the entire yule log, and every year I fail for one reason or another (although I did luck out and get A Log's Life that year that that aired).  I was all set for this year, and then this.  I have to question, how widely available will this new channel be, and how expensive of a cable package will I have to purchase in order to get it?  I'm afraid I only see this as bad news, and more bad news, no yule log this year, and yule log only at a premium in future years.  I will be expressing my disappointments in an email to Sean.

Hi Chip,

Really sorry for the news.

I read the Antenna TV website, and I'm still confused.

It reads that it will be available for "national broadcasting" but does that mean it will be/sell as an "extended cable" channel?  Does this potentially mean that WPIX may not carry it next year?

...Laugh, but I am still a 22 Channel with 100 Channel capable TV.  The Smithsonian called and wants the solid state for their archives.

I feel badly for those who live outisde the market areas of the stations that will televise The Yule Log who can receive WGN America.  Many of them once lived in the New York and Chicago viewing areas and will not be able to share the wonderful holiday tradition this year.

Will Antenna TV be widely available?  Will it even be available on New York area cable providers?  What about areas not served by Tribune stations?

Very sad, indeed!

I understand his excuses, but I have to agree with maxx151 on this one.  It doesn't sound like they are REALLY too worried about it not airing, or they would have put out more of an effort to fund it so it could still air.  Highly disappointing.  I'm not far from Chicago in Peoria, but I'm not sure if we can get the channel 9 or not.  I'll have to check that out.

Johnny:

At this point WGN America will not be airing the Yule Log at all; instead, they plan to air holiday movies.

Bob:

The sponsor concept is a good one, and one which WPIX has used successfully since they brought the program back in 2001. However, because you can only have a limited number of sponsors, the revenue generated from this approach is still considerably less than normal commercial programming. So much so, that it is still apparently to big a financial sacrifice for WGN America to make. But please, I encourage you and everyone reading this post to pass along your comments directly to the station and let them know how you feel. Sean assured me that they read each and every message they receive. There is still plenty of time before Christmas for them to reconsider their decision -- and I'm holding out hope against hope that they will indeed do just that. Click here to send them a message.

Jon:

The idea of this new Antenna TV Network is a good one. Not only because of its commitment to airing classic TV programs, but also because I need to find a permanent home for the Yule Log. I just can't be fighting these battles every year with the networks to get the program aired. This new station offers for the first time a permanent and secure home where the Yule Log can take refuge. And while I don't like the fact that I now have to wait another year for the full 4-hour program to premiere nationally, I don't mind as long as from that point forward it will be smooth sailing.

By the way, this new network will be much more widely available across the country as it will be offered for national distribution to non-Tribune stations as well. My suggestion to everyone is to call your cable or satellite provider and make sure they will be carrying the new Antenna TV Network. It might take a little while, but in due time it will be as readily available as Nickelodeon and TV Land are today.

Diane:

How each cable and satellite company will handle the new Antenna TV Network is not something I can speak to. But as I said earlier, I believe eventually it will be as readily available as Nickelodeon and TV Land are today.

And rest assured that this new network does not in any way affect WPIX's airing of the program -- none. All of the Tribune affiliates are separate and independent entities.

Frank:

Yes, to all three of your questions about the new Antenna TV Network: it will be widely available; available to New York cable operators; and available to non-Tribune stations.

Dave:

I understand how you feel; nobody is more disappointed than me. This is why it is so important for everyone to speak up make their voices heard. This is also why I am constantly rallying the troops to the cause and passionately cautioning against complacency. You just can't take anything for granted.

I can understand to a degree WGN's current plight; Tribune Broadcasting is still fighting their way out of bankruptcy and trying to divide the company up between several investors. Thankfully, this should all be done by the spring. I'm just glad the bankruptcy hasn't delayed the roll-out of the new Antenna TV Network.

Chip,

Just curious, If WGN/WGN America is having such trouble financially and being in Chapter 11.  Wouldn't they be just adding to the problem by creating a whole new channel?  I admit, I don't know a lot about Chapter 11, but I believe that it protects them from creditors so they can restructure or something, but still if its so much trouble now, why bother creating another expense?

I clicked on the link to contact them, but  it takes me to Tribune.com and under "Contact Us" it shows the following:

Susan,

The Antenna TV project was in the works before Tribune filed for Chapter 11. But please understand that just because a company declares Chapter 11, it doesn't mean the operations of the business just come to a halt. On the contrary; they proceed as normal as they reorganize -- especially with ventures that could be money earners for them in the future, like this new Antenna TV network for example.

As far as contacting the station is concerned, in addition to the contact email addresses that you have received from me via my group emails, another email address that you can use to send a message to the station is WGNAmerica@tribune.com (just make sure you address it to Sean).

Hi Chip,
With the Yule Log moving to a permanent place on Antenna TV , does that mean that WPIX will no longer be broadcasting it?  Or is this just the option which WGN is providing to its customers?
I am lucky to have spent my whole life in the New York area and I remember gathering the blankets and pillows on the living room floor to watch the Christmas Eve airings of the Yule Log.
Now the Yule Log is a morning tradition with my family as we open gifts and tune to WPIX.  I hope those of us in the "tri-state" area will always be able to stay home with the original.
Thanks.

I never thought it was such a bad little tree.  It's not bad at all, really.  Maybe it just needs a little love....

Thanks Chip,

I didn't know that "Antenna TV" was in the works before Tribune file for Chapter 11.  I was thinking it was a new venture after the fact adn if they could afford to start a new network, why couldn't they afford to broadcast The Yule Log?

Thanks for extra email address.

RE:Conversation with Sean Compton regarding national coverage

I posted a question to Antenna TV on Facebook about whether or not Dish Network would be giving us Antenna TV and this is the response I received

"Hi Susan,
Steve M. Russo commented on Antenna TV - Tribune Broadcasting Company's wall post.
Steve wrote: "Sub-channels such as the ones that carry RTV,THIS and ANTENNA-TV are not on Dish or DirecTV as the DBS services are not required to carry sub-channels by the FCC under “must-carry“ rules, only the primary channel. There's also the factor they just don't have the space - who knows what will happen with then FCC requires them to carry the sub-channels - that would require bandwidth and channel assignments for over 1000 channels! As ANTENNA-TV is being broadcast in local markets on sub-channels, so don't except Dish or DirecTV to carry them anytime soon. Also, FCC "must-carry" rules do not require cable companies and telecos (U-Verse,FiOS,etc) to add these channels. However, for the most part these channels do get carriage (Picked-up), but it’s not automatically given. The biggest issue facing any broadcaster is getting clearance of the "sub-channels" on all cable systems in the broadcast area.

Reply to this email to comment on this post.
Thanks,
The Facebook Team"

The part it red type I added after I went back to Facebook and commented back to Antenna TV so the paragraph in black type after that was part of my original post

I did a response back to Antenna TV on Facebook, but don't know if they will delete it but here is what I said:

"
Susan Rasmussen Thanks Steve. So, once again it looks like a lot of us won't be able to see The WPIX Yule Log next year either being WGN America is what most of us are able to get on our cable and satellite systems and we were promised that we would be able to see it this year on WGN America, but on November 4th, we found out that WGN America changed their minds and disappointed thousands and thousands of viewers."

So for folks who don't have a Tribune Affiliate that will have Antenna TV as a sub channel of their local Station it looks like they still won't be able to see The WPIX Yule Log next year.  My only suggestion is to call Dish Network (I don't like to promote companies) and ask them if you were to become a subscriber, would they let you get Superstation WPIX?  It's $2.00 more a month and wouldn't be in HD, but it would be WPIX's broadcast.  That is how I was able to watch The Yule Log this year.  We get Retro Television and THIS TV Networks as sub channels of our locals, but we have to use a Digital To Analog Converter box or a Digital Tuner built in to our HDTV and an external antenna to pick them up because Dish Network only gives us the main channel for each of our locals.

If you are already a Dish Network customer, but not in the NYC/NJ area, call them and ask if you can add Superstation WPIX.

DirecTV won't even offer WPIX so that is why we switched to Dish Network a year ago.

EDITED 12/30/10  I received a couple more follow-ups from Antenna TV

Steve M. Russo ‎@ANTENNA TV - NO sub-channels are being offered by either Dish or DirecTV - I suggest you folks keep up with the facts before passing information on to the viewers.

End of responses.

Chip,

From what I read initially, when you were telling us that WGN America changed it's mind and wasn't going to broadcast The Yule Log this year, it sounded like everyone would be able to receive Antenna TV but being it is a Digital sub-channel of WGN America, obviously if you don't live in the Chicago area you won't receive it.  I did see a blurb last night on WPIX 10 PM news about WPIX carrying it on Digital channel 11-3 I believe.

Steve Russo's last comment is rather sarcastic.   From the way you explained that Sean Compton assured you that next year Antenna TV would be the home of The Yule Log  It mad it sound like it would be made available to everyone and not as a sub channel of their Digital channel.

I don't know if Sean intentionally mislead  you or not, but if it helps, please feel free to use what I have posted about my contact with them on Facebook in any further contact with him.

Our CW station isn't a Tribune owned station so we won't be getting Antenna TV

Susan,

Just a reminder that you don't have to edit your last post to add additional information as long as the new information that you are posting is on the next calendar day. Remember: it's only same-day double-posting that is not allowed on the board. Click here to reacquaint yourself with the policy.

As for the new Antenna TV network, Sean did not mislead me in any way. He wouldn't do that.

As I said in my post of November 5, 2010, this new channel in time should be much more widely available across the country than WGN America, as it will be offered for distribution (as a subchannel) to Tribune and non-Tribune stations alike, including your locally owned by LIN Broadcasting CW affiliate in Buffalo. It is totally up to each station as to whether or not they choose to carry the new Antenna TV network.

In addition, service providers such as Comcast can carry the new Antenna TV network by directly adding it to their channel lineup. As a result, in due time, I believe Antenna TV will be as readily available as Nickelodeon and TV Land are today.

By the way, what you said about folks in Chicago not being able to receive new Antenna TV network is not true. They can receive it in two waysas subchannel 9.2 of local WGN (Channel 9), and directly as channel 353 on Comcast cable.

Click here for the current list of Antenna TV subchannels and service provider affiliates.

RE:Conversation with Sean Compton regarding national coverage

Thanks Chip,

The way I read it, I was under the impression that it would be a whole new channel and not a sub channel of Digital 9 in Chicago.  And being a sub-channel, I already know that cable and satellite providers don't have to provide the sub-channels.  I knew this long before Steve/Antenna TV's responses to me.

I don't understand about where I mentioned that people in Chicago wouldn't be able to receive Antenna TV.  The only reference I can see where I mentioned anything close to this was, and I'll quote part of my previous comment

"Chip,

From what I read initially, when you were telling us that WGN America changed it's mind and wasn't going to broadcast The Yule Log this year, it sounded like everyone would be able to receive Antenna TV but being it is a Digital sub-channel of WGN America, obviously if you don't live in the Chicago area you won't receive it.  I did see a blurb last night on WPIX 10 PM news about WPIX carrying it on Digital channel 11-3 I believe."

Is that what you were referring to?

If our local CW decides to offer Antenna TV, we will have to use an antenna and Digital Tuner or Converter box to receive it and most likely the picture quality won't be that great and they probably won't be in HD.  We get Retro TV, and also get THIS TV, but the images look like a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a VHS or BETA tape or watching a very poor quality YouTube Video.  But the Station ID's are crystal clear.  We get shows like Peter Gunn, and they picture is very grainy even with Night Rider, the picture is grainy but again the station ID's are crystal clear.

This is only a guess, but I believe the image resolution for the actual programs is 320 x 240 so you can pretty much see every pixel while watching the channel.

Thanks again.

According to the affiliate list, there are plenty of markets where Antenna TV is not available on cable or digital sub-channel.  So far, there is no cable coverage in the New York area, but this won't be an issue as long as The Yule Log is on PIX 11.

Fortunately, it is a long time until Christmas 2011 and much can and will likely change by then.  I hope that Antenna TV is more widely available by next Christmas so that the many New Yorkers who now make their homes elsewhere can have a piece of home with them wherever they are.  Happy New Year everybody!

Susan
:

Again let me stress that Antenna TV can be offered as both a subchannel of another channel, and it can be offered as an independent standalone station by a service provider like Comcast. That's why in Chicago folks can receive Antenna TV two ways: as subchannel 9.2 of local WGN's channel 9, and if you have Comcast cable, directly on channel 353. Hopefully most local service providers will add Antenna TV directly to their lineup as a standalone channel as that is the most practical way to make it available to the largest number of people.

Lastly, thanks for clarifying your statement on the Chicago viewers; my eyes missed the key word "don't."

Frank:

Please understand that the current affiliate list of subchannels and service providers is only the beginning. I ask you to bear in mind that the station is still in its infancy, and like any new station, it will take time for it to catch on.

You're welcome Chip,

And I thank you.

I emailed our LIN Broadcasting CW station to see if they will be getting Antenna TV but haven't heard anything back yet.

We're already getting OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) on Dish Network channel 189 but I think they dropped an channel at that spot to give us this channel.

If Dish Network doesn't carry Antenna TV I hope that more CW affiliates will, even the not Tribune owned ones but also it would be over the air and the sub channels aren't always in the higher resolution, and in HD.

Will let you know if I hear anything back from our local CW affiliate.

Thanks again.

No Michael; Antenna TV is most definitely not replacing WGN America. It is an entirely new network. As for your cable company, Bright House Networks, I personally do not know whether they will be carrying the new channel. However, for all you Floridians down there, I certainly hope they do.

Antenna TV, as the name implies is just what it is - FREE TV by using an antenna!  Now you just have to get you local TV station to carry "Antenna TV" as an HD-2 or HD-3 channel - the picture might not be too great, but the sound generally is quite good on the HD-2 & HD-3 channels.
Again, pester your local over the air TV stations to ADD "Antenna TV" as a 'sub channel'.
I bought an 'old fashioned looking' TV antenna from Amazon for less than $30, and I pick up all my local TV stations and sub-channels for FREE - AND the picture is BETTER than the cable connection, as they cram so many channels on the cable it makes it worse.
In short - time to pester your local station to ADD "Antenna TV", then get yourself a little antenna for your attic.

I must stress yet again that the most practical way to receive Antenna TV is as a standalone channel from your cable or satellite company, not as a subchannel of a local station where you will need to buy an additional piece of equipment to view it.

Therefore, I strongly encourage everyone to submit a channel request form with your local service provider requesting Antenna TV. I know that Comcast will let you do this over the phone. And I am quite sure that other service providers will let you as well.

RE:Conversation with Sean Compton regarding national coverage
(Date Posted:05/03/2011 19:45)

I spoke with Sean Compton recently about the upcoming 2011 broadcast of the Yule Log and Antenna TV programming in general.

First, with the Yule Log, Sean told me that his tentative plan is to air the complete 4-hour presentation twice back-to-back with the first airing to be broadcast late Christmas Eve night/early Christmas Day morning (whichever way you prefer to look at it) from 2am-6am, and the second airing to be broadcast from 6am-10am on Christmas Day morning. I pushed hard for a Christmas Eve prime time showing, but like with WPIX and the other Tribune affiliates, it would just be too much of a financial sacrifice to air it at that time.

However, some good news: Sean is making special plans to air Christmas episodes of classic TV shows on Christmas Eve night. He is also hoping to air Christmas-themed movies on Christmas Day afternoon.

As for other programming news, Sean is adding Burns & Allen and Soap to the Antenna TV lineup beginning Memorial Day weekend. And more new shows will be forthcoming in the future.

As I receive further updates from Sean, I'll post them here.

By the way, Antenna TV is continually being added by local service providers to their channel lineups. To see if Antenna TV is yet available in your area, Click Here.

I hope that WGN America airs the complete 4 hour Yule Log on Christmas Day. It'll break my funky little heart if they don't air it on WGN two straight years.

Sorry Dan, but Sean will no longer be airing the Yule Log on WGN America
. The program's permanent new home for national television coverage is now on Antenna TV. This is in addition to the local coverage by the various Tribune affiliates across the country.

For your area of Asheboro, North Carolina, you will be able to pick up Antenna TV on the following stations:

Over the air:
Fox WGHP (Digital Channel 8.2)

On cable:
Time Warner (Channel 126)
Charter (Channel 175)
Windstream (Channel 511)
North State Plex (Channel 19)

I've begged the Toledo over-the-air TV stations to add "Antenna TV" as a digital channel to their signal, but one station took it as an insult that their main channel programming isn't good enough (which actually is true, but I didn't try to convey that).  I doubt my cable system will add it as they are taking channels away and raising the price (just like the stores giving you less product in the same container for the same price).
Oh well, I'm not giving up on Antenna TV, nor will I give-up letters to Collector's Choice Music for some great re-mastered Christmas music from Percy Faith !!!!

I've contacted every local TV station in my area of Western NY State and really didn't get much of a response.  Part of the problem is our CW affiliate is a non-Tribune owned station so they most definitely run a competitor's programming.

Our NBC affiliate give is Retro Television Network which is a competitor of Antenna TV.

Another local channel runs THIS TV which is a competitor of Antenna TV.

Then our ABC and affiliate never got back to me.

Our MyTV and Fox Affiliate are owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group.

We have a PBS affiliate but they don't even run a lot of the National PBS Feeds, especially durning Christmas.  They run their own programming and interrupt it with pledge breaks.

Then we have a Christian channel that is a TCT affiliate and one of their sub-channels is TCT Family and they broadcast a few classic TV Series like The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, The Beverly Hillbillies, Bonanza and a few others so they are somewhat of a competitor of Antenna TV.

I've gone as far as contacting all our local TV station owners corporate offices as well as Antenna TV and the only possibility of getting Antenna TV would've been from MyTV or Fox, but When I called Sinclair Broadcast Group, they told me that they were talking with Antenna TV.

But with my corresponding with Antenna TV via Facebook, Sinclair Broadcast Group isn't going to be carrying Antenna TV on any of their affiliates.

Right now, I really don't have to worry about watching The WPIX Yule Log because we have Dish Network and we can get WPIX, WSBK, KWGN, WWOR and KTLA as a group of Super Stations or on an individual basis, but because we are not in NYC or NJ, we can only get the WPIX SD feed and not their HD feed, but at least watching it on WPIX, we don't have that huge WGN America logo splattered on the bottom of the screen and it's opaque and stays on the screen through the whole broadcast, but I've only been able to see the 2- hour version on WGN America.

The only thing I worry about is if it is snowing and it sticks to the dish because we will lose signal and wont' be able to watch it.

We can pick up a few of our local digital channels with an indoor antenna, but being none of them will carry Antenna TV, I wouldn't be able to watch The Yule Log at all if we lose satellite signal.

So if any of you have Dish Network and are not in the NYC or NJ Area, contact Dish Network and see if you are eligible for their Super Station Package or get them A-La-Carte for $2.00 a month per channel.  The package would be cheaper but all we wanted was WWOR and WPIX.  But again, they won't be in HD.  This way you would be guaranteed of being able to watch The Yule Log on WPIX as long as the weather doesn't interfere with the satellite signal.
