Well,I tuned in just in time to catch the top 10 things and was impressed with the amount of time the show gave to The Yule Log program! Ranked 7, the spot on the show was a few minutes long (maybe 4 or 5) compared to the ones before that was minute to 90 seconds at most.BUT, I'm wondering if I saw yet another example of sloppiness and bad research on tv when the program told viewers the second version was shot on a "Hollywood Soundstage"!To my knowledge, and as its documented on this site, the re-shot video took place in a private home in California. I was always impressed that PIX sent a crew to look for a similar-looking fireplace in California but can't believe they would pay for a Hollywood studio set.ALSO: this got me wondering. SInce Mayor Bloomberg does not live in Gracie Mansion and the house is mainly open now for special events and tourists, what, if anything, could or would PIX do if Channel 5 in NY requested to shoot a video of the fireplace and air it?Dueling logs..THAT would be an interesting NYC tv event.

YG,

In my talks with the production crew on the BRAVO special, never did I give information that the reshoot was done on a Hollywood soundstage. Their information was also incorrect when they said the Log was originally shot in black & white. As you know, all information that gets posted on this site is acquired from people who were originally connected with the actual production of The Yule Log. As far as a different station shooting a Yule Log, maybe in other cities. But I'm hoping that other stations would have the respect not to medal with a fellow NYC broadcaster's long time tradition.

Hey Joe!

Happy Yuletide (as Ed Norton says) to you. Hope things are going well. Good to see ya on the program. Geez, you would have thought they would have used your site as a source for material concerning the show's history, production etc.  When I heard the wrong info, I right away thought to myself, "huh? didn't they bother to talk to Joe?"

Since I work in media and know a lot of these NYC based media outlets are filled with younger pups who aren't skilled in research and don't have the proper supervision to ensure good fact-checking, seems to me this was another rush job (partly based on the arrogance that is pervasive anyway in the places). I mean, why go to you and the site when they 'know it all'. Then again, MAYBE they got the info from someone at PIX itself?

On another note, I'd love to see another Yule Log program enter the scene. I would enjoy seeing, say, channel 5 offer a newly videotaped Yule Log from Gracie. Nothing will ever replace PIX's program but it'd be fantastic to have two choices and see a new generation program and how that would look.

Any luck ever finding or having someone send you the original PIX loop from Gracie yet?

I agree with Joe. I don't give a doggone what they do in other cities across the country. But here in New York, I hope competing stations will have the good sense not to try to imitate the WPIX Yule Log with a version of their own.

In my humble opinion, dueling Yule logs would be a sad and disastrous NYC TV event. God forbid that ever happens. Not only could they never duplicate the great footage of WPIX's classic fireplace, but the music they would probably chose for the most part, would be the same contemporary Christmas music that stations predominately play today -- most of which is execrable.

I just love Chip's vocabulary. He's the only guy I know that can get away with going from doggone to execrable in the same post.

I'd have to disagree with you fellas on this one. I'd like to see how another station would attempt a Yule Log-style program today. I'm going to predict that with the PIX Yule Log now being syndicated in house at Tribune stations and earning respectable ratings, it' s only a matter of time that a tv station OR a production company will attempt their own and market it to other stations as Christmas programming. AND, they will somehow incorporate sponsors in it too.

We'll see....

On another note, from what I can see, the MSG Network will not air its own yule log this year for the first time quite a few. Last year, I believe their log program was on from about 9pm Christmas Eve to Noon Christmas Day.

That's cool Yank, we can't all agree on everything -- except our passion and love for great Christmas music and the Yule Log. Eh?

Did anyone else (except me) notice that VH1 used some Yule Log footage on "I Love the Holidays"?
