I noticed that this morning's WPIX presentation of the Yule Log was not just MONO instead of stereo, but it wasn't even a combination of the stereo mix, only one side of it.  Meaning on tracks like "A  Musical Christmas Card" by Fred Waring or any song that had a split chorus (males on the one channel, females on the other), only one side of the chorus was audible.

I thought perhaps it was just the feed my cable company was getting (I live in NJ where Comcast is the provider) but I went to Long Island for the annual Christmas with family and caught most of the new 4th hour and it was like that on their feed as well. (They have Verizion FiOS.)

It really ruined the new fourth hour for me to hear only "half" the tunes so to speak in many cases.  I wonder what the problem was?

I noticed it right away when the program began at 4am. I was up all night with engineering trying to get it resolved. They couldn't find a problem, but it was so painfully obvious that there was one -- especially when the Ray Conniff songs played due to the fact that they have a distinct separation between the left and right channels. Needless to say, I was exasperated by this. I am determined that this problem won't happen again next year. I'll be in contact with WPIX engineering director John Seminerio on Monday to try and get this mysterious technical glitch resolved.

Hey Chip,

Did you ever find out what was wrong with the audio on this year's broadcast?  Was it like that on the WGN feed as well?

It is still under investigation, but apparently the problem was not system-wide as some folks didn't experience any audio problems with the broadcast at all. Therefore, we have still yet to determine if the problem was with the WPIX feed, or the cable/satellite provider's re-transmission of the signal. As soon as I have more information on this, I'll report it here.

Here I thought my old RCA Solid State was the problem. Comcast here, North NJ. Yes, I heard it too, but I figured it was my tv since the switch, even though I have cable, I loose either some picture, or sound quality. Chalked it up to new technology streaming through old equipment and just enjoyed the show. My Best Wishes.

So far, we have been able to determine that the problem was limited to selective cable TV subscribers. Satellite TV subscribers seemed to receive the program fine. Now we have to determine why.
