Hi Chip,
Realizing this group is very new to the Christmas Music scene, I understand they might not be considered "Traditional Christmas Music Genre". Well, here it goes.

Just finished watching "Straight No Chaser" on You Tube, their performance on the Today Show last year near Christmas. Just curious Chip, would you ever consider a new twist on promoting the Yule Log with Straight No Chaser?

I don't know. I just want to keep the Yule Log on air. Thinking a new twist on promoting it, a vehicle like SNC who are currently touring (just finished Harrah's in A.C.) towards their Christmas performances. Their videos are lively. They have the "new" viewership that could put a new "oomphf" into the 2010 ratings.

My marketing mind is spinning over here, all for the love of the log.

My Best to the Yule (B)Loggers.
Diane

Diane,

I'm not clear on what promotional idea you're suggesting.

Chip and Everyone,

My apologies to everyone.  Let me try again to explain what I am thinking here.

Instead of the news personalities announcing the promotion of the Yule Log, have a group or a singer who is currently touring and is known for their Christmas Music to promote it.  Get a well known name behind it that even Gen Y knows. If it worked, every year another group/singer could be the promotional announcer. That being said, I know full and well they will want some time of payment.

Having acknowledged that fact, even so...there are Glee Clubs and Choral Groups everywhere who have You Tube Channels, and perhaps they might do the Yule Log promotional for free.

Another idea is a YouTube ad that pops open on Christmas music videos, choral/glee groups promoting this year's Yule Log and time, and with the Yule Log website link embedded.

I don't know.  Just think we are a group of talented, (B)Loggers here there must be some way to land promotional for The Yule Log and grab new viewers.  I realize this has to be a handshake/agreement with the folks who own the footage, and place it on the air.
If the Yule Log were to be marketed/focused to a new group of viewers, such as the folks who are fans/followers of the "Straight No Chaser" who sing Christmas Songs re-worked, it would boost the viewership ratings, and bring new fans.

Maybe this is a "Bake Sale" idea, and I am just not seeing it that way.

Yours in Yule Log
Diane

Thanks for the suggestion, Diane; I appreciate it. However, since WPIX uses the program to promote the station, they will always use their own personalities to host/announce the show. As far as the long-term survival of the program is concerned, it's not the ratings that are an issue (as they are stellar -- click here), but rather the continued commitment of WPIX and the other Tribune affiliates to air it despite the fact that it is a revenue loss for them since it is shown commercial-free.

Chip,

As far as revenue loss goes, the past few years there have been sponsors, would you happen to know how much they offset the loss???  Just curious.

Thanks,
Henry

Henry,

Only WPIX has sponsors for their Yule Log telecast; all the other Tribune Broadcasting affiliates (including WGN America) show the program both commercial-free and sponsor-free, which means that if they really wanted to, WPIX could do the same.

As far as the revenue that WPIX earns from these sponsors, that is proprietary information. However, as long as the use of these sponsors guarantees that they continue to air the broadcast commercial-free, I am for them, even though it would be nice if it was shown both commercial-free and sponsor-free like all the other Tribune affiliates.
