I just discovered that Mantovani's second Christmas album, "Christmas Greetings From Mantovani," is available on CD as an import! It was released in the U.K. on CD in 2006 by Dutton-Vocalian Records. Unfortunately, they did not see fit to use the original London Records artwork (as pictured below) and the album has been re-titled "A Song For Christmas." However, it has been digitally remastered and has all the songs from the original LP and in their original order, and this in itself is a first. Before this, all that was offered for Mantovani were various compilation CDs of the Maestro's Christmas material -- something I have never been able to understand.

What's surprising, if not startling, about this release is why they didn't release Mantovani's first Christmas album, "Christmas Carols," which by far was his greatest triumph. I very much hope this will come later. Mantovani was the 2nd greatest instrumental Christmas music artist ever, second only to the master and King of Christmas music, the great Percy Faith.

By the way, this album by Monty (as he was affectionately known by his friends and fans) was originally released in 1963 -- not 1964 as stated on the Dutton-Vocalian website. This is another quintessential example of the lesson, "you can't believe everything you read."

There are a total of 3 songs from this LP that were used on the Yule Log soundtrack over the years2 songs aired on the "classic" program that was broadcast in various forms from 1973-1989 (and was the model for our audio restoration for WPIX in 2006), and 1 song aired prior to this, in the early years of the Yule Log. And just in case you're wondering, there were a total of 5 songs on the Yule Log soundtrack that were taken from Monty's first Christmas album: 2 songs aired on the "classic" program (1973-1989), and 3 songs aired in the early years.

Below is an excerpt from a post I filed in September of 2006; I think it bears repeating:

Mantovani's music brilliantly reflected something his father taught him as a child: he said, "Put feeling into your music, my boy -- music without feeling is little more than a noise."

As a result of his unequivocal success, we are now left with a legacy of a lot of great music with a hell of a lot of feeling.

Hi Chip,

Thank you for your interesting post on the release of "Montalvani's Christmas CD".  I cannot say that I ever had a copy of that album in my collection but I do have a copy on vynil of his other Christmas record "Christmas Carols".  I too agree that that album should have been released on CD as well.
Tthe latter title was something I wanted to discus with you

Before this site was established, I had an inkling that there might have been a few songs that came from the YL and I was right... "Oh Christmas Tree" and "O' Holy Night".  The former title was my favorite version of all time and it was the most sought after piece in my Christmas collection. Also, the latter title I could not help but confuse this version with the version done by Percy Faith as they were both instrumentals and had certain similarities.

Now, here is what I wanted to ask you: The copy of "Christmas Carols" that I have on vynil has a purple colored London label with silver print and design.  Of course, the two songs mentioned above came from this album.  I could not resist buying this album for only two bucks.  Prior to buying this album, I found another copy of what appears to be the same record but this version had a burgundy-ish color London label but the version of "Oh Christmas Tree" sounded noticeably different. In addition, the band for the song on the record was also noticeably wider thus making the song a bit longer.  Was this in fact an earlier version, perhaps recorded in mono? Or was this an alternate version, altogether?

Rich,

You asked this very same question before, on October 3, 2006, and I answered it quite extensively that same day.

In case you forgot, here is a link to the thread; your post is the second to last post on the thread (the 17th one down dated October 3, 2006), and my post, which directly follows, is the last post (18th one down) on the thread:

No problem. As we get old, the memory is the first thing to go.

O Christmas Guru:  I have some questions about an album of MP3's I have, which I think are by Mantovani.   The CD was one of a group of several unrelated CD's in a Christmas collection that we received at our office several years ago, and I no longer have the set of CD's.

Here is the listing of the tracks (in alphabetical order):

Christmas Medley
Ding Dong
Good King Wenceslas
Merry Christmas Medley
Nativity Medley
O Come All Ye Faithful
Silent Night
The Holly and the Ivy

The music is an orchestra with a group of singers.   Sometimes a children's chorus joins in.
The music sounds to me like something from England from the early 60's.

Here are my questions:

Is this a compilation from several different albums?

Can you tell me the name of the Mantovani album or albums that these tracks originally appeared on?

When and where were these recorded?

Any information on the vocal group?   Was it the Mike Sammes Singers?

If these were on one album, can you tell me the correct sequence of the tracks?

Any other information on these recordings would be great.   Thanks.

Welcome to the message board, Bill!

I cannot answer your question fully without hearing several of these songs since Good King Wenceslas, Adeste Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful), Silent Night and The Holly And The Ivy were recorded by both Mantovani himself and then later re-recorded by the "Mantovani Orchestra" with a totally different conductor.

However, because of how the songs are grouped together in your list, and especially because you referred to a children's chorus, I can pretty much tell you that it is very likely that all of the songs in your list are from an album that was recorded long after Mantovani had died called The Great Songs Of Christmas. It was released in 1982 on Bainbridge Records and featured the Children's Choir of St. Clements Dane. Click here.

By the way, the Mike Sammes Singers were in fact the vocal group on Mantovani's second Christmas LP, Christmas Greetings From Mantovani, which was released in 1963. And that they did in fact sing the song The Holly And The Ivy, but this is not the version that is on the 1982 LP that the songs you listed came from.

OK, Chip, thanks for that link.   That album consists of 4 medleys.   The CD I have has numbers 1, 3 and 4.

Medley 2 and the other (instrumental) tracks appear to come from the album "Christmas With The Mantovani Orchestra":

Here is a link to that album.

When were the instrumental tracks on "Christmas With The Mantovani Orchestra" recorded?

That Christmas CD which you provided the link to on Amazon is just a compilation. I'm not sure what album those other 3 songs (the Swedish Rhapsody song and the two Sleeping Beauty songs) were pulled from, but it's completely immaterial as none of this is genuine Mantovani music anyway.

I don't pay any attention to this spurious music as none of it compares to the genuine music that Monty recorded himself. Take my advice and stick with the real McCoy.

Thanks Chip -  I am starting to understand that "Mantovani" is the name of a franchise as well as a conductor.

I will check out "the real thing" more thoroughly now.

I still enjoyed the "Christmas Medleys", even though they were not conducted by Mantovani himself.   I've had those in my collection for several years, but just now got around to listening to them.
