This In The Spotlight tribute is dedicated to one of the great new classic artists that I added to the Yule Log telecast in 2009 with the addition of my new fourth hour. That artist is the great folk group of the 1960s, The New Christy Minstrels; and the song is their incomparable and inimitable rendition of Sleigh Ride.

This magnificent song hails from the group's classic and legendary 1966 Columbia Records LP, Christmas With The Christies. The arrangements on this spectacular LP are outstanding, the performance impeccable and the total net result is sheer brilliance. But hey, I really don't think you would expect anything less than superlatives of this kind from me for an album that not only resides in the 1st Tier of my Top 300, but in my all-time Top 25, coming in at #23.

By the way, in the new fourth hour that I produced, I actually included 2 Christies songs from this sensational LP; the other song being their absolutely exquisite rendition of Here We Come A-Caroling. But for right now, for this well-deserved In The Spotlight tribute, I invite you to sit back and enjoy Sleigh Ride by the dynamic New Christy Minstrels.

Chip - I couldn't agree with you more - "Christmas With The Christies" is a fantastic album. I also love their version of "We Need A Little Christmas" which is on the same LP -- I always thought that this was the definitive version of the song. Always sounded to me a bit like "The New Christy Minstrels Meet The Ray Conniff Singers" !!

I also think that the Christies' first Christmas album "Merry Christmas" is great as well. "Beautiful City", "Tell It On The Mountain", and "Sing Hosannah, Hallelujah" are favorites -- they just make you want to tap your feet and sing along ! The album is full of catchy tunes and great vocal harmonies.

Chip - great choice for an In The Spotlight tribute !!

I agree Rich; the Christies version of We Need A Little Christmas is indeed the definitive version. And yes, their first Christmas album from 1963 was a great one indeed; and even though it is not ranked as high as their 1966 Christmas album, it still resides in the 1st Tier of my
Top 300, coming in at #56.

By the way, for anyone interested, I announced on the message board earlier tonight on another thread that I had spoken to Gordon Anderson earlier today and he will be re-releasing the Christies complete Christmas CD that he had originally released in 2001 with Collectors' Choice Music on his new Real Gone Music label next year for Christmas 2013. Copies of the out-of-print CCM disc are currently going for big bucks on Amazon and eBay; so my recommendation is to save your money and just wait for the re-release next year.
