Next Friday, Nov 6, a new 3D version of the Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" will be released.  From a technological standpoint, I'm sure it'll be marvelous.  Will it be able to stand up to the perennial Alistair Sim classic from 1951 or the George C Scott TV version from 1989?  Only time will tell.

I don't usually run right to the local cinema to see the latest Christmas movies as most of them can't hold a candle to the classics everyone on this board cherishes so much, but I might give this one a chance.  I won't expect it to be anything resembling earlier versions, but given that this one will be in 3D might make it fun.

I took the plunge and yesterday went to see Disney's "A Christmas Carol" in 3D.  Just as I thought when it was released, it was fun seeing it in 3D.  It made everything lifelike.  It had a great soundtrack.  I'll try to get the soundtrack CD.

The only problem the movie has is that it has the Disney brand name on it, making parents think its for kids only.  Not true!  I would say it's for no one younger than 12.

Earlier cinematic adaptations, notably Alistair Sim and a TV version starring George C Scott are excellent, but this is one for the digital age.

Go see it.  It's a fun ride, especially in 3D.

I'm not a Jim Carrey fan at all, so was hesitant in going to see this, but was talked into by my better half and I had to admit, this was very well done.  I totally enjoyed this film and thought there was perhaps just a scene or two that seemed to drag on a bit, but other than that, it got a big thumb's up, from me.

I pre-ordered Disney's "A Christmas Carol" on Blu-Ray and DVD 2 disc set that is going to be released on November 16th Disney's A Christmas Carol (2-Disc) (Blu-ray + Standard DVD) (Widescreen) (Widescreen)

I didn't get to see it at the movie theater last year and I don't really think I would like to see it in 3-D because it messes up my vision for a little while after watching 3-D movies.  I still have a VHS of "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" that is in 3-D and I can't watch it anymore even without the glasses because it's basically 2 images of the movie slightly overlapped in two colors and it messes up my eyes too.

I've heard good and bad things about the movie, but I figure it would be worth a shot to see this adaptation.  One thing I heard is that they used similar, if not the exact same scenes from another release that Disney had done, but I can't remember for sure what it was.  I think it has to do with an image of the flame on the candle when scrooge snuffs it out, but again, I can't remember what it was for sure and there was supposed to be another scene that was from something else that Disney had done too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think A Christmas Carol is the most-filmed story in cinematic history.  It's been done time and again, every time with a slightly different approach to the Dickens' classic.

Some of us might recall an animated TV version in 1962, Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.  I wouldn't say it became a classic, but just another take on a story that is told every Christmas.  Don't remember that last time I saw that one.  Not sure if the Mr. Magoo version ever made it to VHS much less DVD.

Frank,

Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol has not only been released in the past on VHS, but also on DVD, and this year, on Blu-ray as well.

And this is definitely a classic.

I guess I lost contact with Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.  I haven't seen that one in many years.  Glad to hear it's still with us.
