Well, here I am at five minutes to seven on Christmas morning waiting for my first ever viewing of The Yule Log.

I'm snug in my daybed.  The TV is warmed up and tuned to the correct channel.  I've got a big mug of tea, a cup of nog, and a plate of fruitcake on the bedside table.

If only I'd thought to wrap myself a present so I could unwrap it this morning.

OK, three minutes to go!

See you later!

Will,

If you can remember, please make sure KZJO in Seattle shows the complete 4-hour program including my new hour. I want to make sure they don't repeat music in the fourth hour.

For the discography of the soundtrack, Click Here (the new fourth hour is comprised of songs #71 thru #93).

I'm way ahead of you Chip!

I've already got the web pages of the first three hours and the 4th hour up on my laptop.

And I'm counting down the last few songs of the third hour as I type.

Right now we're on:

66
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (Instr)
George Melachrino

We've got about 11 minutes to go until the fourth hour is due to start.

I'll post back as soon as I hear what they play.

Over and out.

Yup!  That's right, Chip!

As I type this out here in Seattle we are on:

74
Must Be Santa
Mitch Miller

So it looks like we're going to get the whole shooting match out here.

I'll let you know if they make any changes before the hour is out.

Percy Faith's "Hark the Herald" is playing as I start typing this at 10:57 am out in Seattle.

So, the good news is it looks like we got the whole four hours in Seattle.

The only minor glitch I noticed was a second or so of black screen and silence at the transition from  hour three to hour four.

My digital reception isn't very good, so there were some sound drop-outs, and minor picture break-ups from time to time, but I'm guessing those were from my reception problems, and weren't in the transmission.

We'll know more when I get to look at the recording that I hope was made this morning on an acquaintance's DVR.

Thanks, Chip, for my first Christmas Yule Log!

My wife and I are seeing The Yule Log broadcast (from our local station here in Harrisburg) for the first time in about 40 years and it is indeed a treat on this Christmas Day 2011.
I recorded it onto two DVD's for posterity and we're running it as we unwrap gifts this evening. We were following along with Chip's listing and suddenly the next song that was supposed to play was something completely different. After a bit of scrolling/searching through the list, it turns out it jumped from song #34 to song #71, went through to the end, #93, and then jumped back to #35 and has continued in order from there; we're currently on song #55 and I suspect it will continue through to song #70, Joy To The World, and end there. Basically, they did not air Chip's new fourth hour at the end which is kind of strange. But at least it looks like we've got the entire broadcast!

I had a similar experience here in Saint Louis while watching on KPLR.  The songs don't follow the order that they are listed on the web site here.  We are only getting a two hour version as well (not even the standard 3 hour version, let alone the added 4th hour.)

Chip had KPLR (Saint Louis) listed as broadcasting from 4:00 am - 7:00 am.  The time was changed to 5:00 am - 7:00 am instead.  Quite the disappointment.

I'm not sure whether to complain to the station for mucking it up and only giving us two hours worth, or to say a big "Thank You" for giving us the program in the first place, even if it is only for two hours.  I would hate to come across as not being appreciative, but still . . .

Will (Secret Video Agent Napoleon Soto):

Thanks for all the information. I'm glad to know that my friends at KZJO came through for me. A bright spot in an otherwise dismal day. Also glad to hear how much you enjoyed the program.

Perry:

Generally KPLR shows the full 4-hour program 8am-12pm. However, this year, because Christmas fell on a Sunday, they weren't able to show it at the length and time they wanted.

Just to confirm...

Our local station, WPMT in Harrisburg, PA, played the entire four hours but not in the correct order. They played songs 1-34, then songs 71-93 (Chip's fourth hour), then songs 35-70. Oh, and there were several brief commercial interruptions included. Weird.
Even so, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed all four hours of The Yule Log 2011. Great job on the fourth hour Chip!

I'm glad that you enjoyed the program, Jeff.

I don't know why WPMT played the songs out of order; I'll have to speak to program director Sandy Hawk about that.

RE:Yule Log Newbie

I'm a Yule Log "newbie",  having been on the Message Board for a few weeks now. I'm really enjoying - and educating - myself. I do have a question for Chip, but I've been hesitating to ask it. I consider myself a traditionalist and a purist in many areas, especially Christmas music, so this question isn't coming from someone who doesn't appreciate what the Yule Log represents. I am not suggesting or proposing a change in any way in the appearance and/or presentation of the annual Yule Log broadcast. From reading your various posts, Chip, I realize how much you respect the tradition - just the way it is. Anyway, here goes...

Over the years, in your thoughts and discussions concerning the Yule Log, did you ever consider displaying the song titles and the artists' name, somewhere on the screen, at the beginning or ending of the respective songs? Now, I'm not talking about turning the Yule Log into an MTV or VH1 video, please don't misunderstand me. But, I am wondering if a number of people who are watching the presentation - and enjoying it - might be curious as to what and who they are listening to, and might even be interested in obtaining the tune(s). I know I have personally "discovered" a lot of new music that way. I realize the purpose of the Yule Log is not to market the material, but it could lead to people broadening their musical horizons if you will, assisted directly by the Yule Log!

Am I banned from the board now? (just kidding)

Max,

In his original November 2, 1966 interoffice memo proposing the idea of the Yule Log, WPIX general manager Fred Thrower had considered a crawl at the bottom of the screen to display the lyrics of the songs that were playing; however, in his very next sentence he reconsidered and said: "On the other hand, I think if the idea is kept startlingly simple, it will have its best chance of being effective." (Click here and scroll down to the last paragraph.)

The reason why Mr. Thrower nixed the idea of the crawl is because he knew it would spoil the effect of the video fireplace -- the concept of which is supposed to project the illusion that the fire is actually in your living room blazing away. This would be the exact same problem if we were to now show on the screen -- even if only briefly -- the song title and artist name at the beginning and end of each musical number. So no, this is not something that will ever happen. However, if folks want to see the song title, lyrics and artist name of the musical number that's currently playing, all they have to do is utilize the closed caption option for their TV and it will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Thanks for your quick and detailed response, Chip. I absolutely agree that simplicity is a key to the charm of the Yule Log.

One of the reasons that I proposed the question was because of the passage of time, and Mr. Thrower's very last paragraph of the memo is an example of this. Mr. Thrower mentions that "the stereo aspect of the sound would not have any meaning for TV..." He is basically still correct; stereo is still not a major component of the Yule Log, even though viewers now watch/listen to the broadcast in many more forms than 1966, forms that Mr. Thrower never could of imagined.

As you realized, I wasn't proposing something like a crawl, which absolutely would be a distraction. My idea was more of the 8-10 second - what word is it? - "posting" of the title and artist, much like the Music Choice stations. Yeah, it would take away from the effect (slightly?), but it might also add something. Just thinking out loud...

Thank you for mentioning the closed caption option; I didn't realize that; I'm wondering how many people do.

Just to clarify - the Yule Log is perfectly fine the way it is!

RE:Yule Log Newbie

Chip,

I didn't realize that there was "Closed Captioning" available for The Yule Log.  Not that I don't know who the artist/s are or the words to the song, etc.  Someone had to go through a lot of effort to create that.

I was going to explain to Max about Fred's initial interoffice memo, but that is really your question to answer and it basically is directed towards yourself.  I had thought about "Closed Captioning" and was going to ask you about it myself as a possible idea, but you beat me to it and now I know it already is available.

The only thing that I don't like, is that they have the Station Logo on the screen.  I don't believe the 2010 broadcast from WPIX had it onscreen the entire time, just every once in awhile.  But a few years before, WGN America had it onscreen almost the entire broadcast and it was very opaque and took up quite a bit of the bottom right hand side of the screen.

It was distracting to say the least.  I believe this was during one of the 2-hour broadcasts because of time constraints they couldn't broadcast the entire restored 3-hour soundtrack.  The station logo was so bad that even when a larger ember falls off the logs and drops onto the other embers, you could barely see it drop.  Most of us "oldtimers" know when each spark is going to happen etc.  It's burned into our mind, as is the 3-hour soundtrack.

As I've mentioned in other threads that if I'm listening to the radio or even to my album Percy Faith "Music of Christmas" and I hear ""Joy to the World" I expect to hear Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians "A Musical Christmas Card" after "Joy to the World"  because the music is burned into my mind.

I'm guessing that TV stations probably do this so that if anyone was to DVR it, companies wouldn't be able to sell it for profit.  It's like watermarking for copy protection.   But during commercials, they don't show the logo.  I'm not referring to The Yule Log when I mention commercials.  But just in general, any broadcast that the TV stations do, their logo is onscreen during the program, but not during the commercials.

Our "Antenna TV" affiliate, has their station logo in the upper left hand corner and it is very opaque and while watching some of the B&W Classic TV programs, it's very noticeable.  I can't say about the Yule Log Broadcast being we just got Antenna TV a couple weeks ago so I wasn't able to view the 2011 Yule Log

But so far, I've only seen our local TV stations Logo and not Antenna TV's logo.  But when we used to get Retro Television Network, we had both logo's onscreen.  It's such a shame that they have to make it so opaque because it really does distract you and ruins these Classic TV programs.

Susan,

With the closed captioning service for the Yule Log, please be aware that for the lyrics on some of the songs it is not always entirely complete and it is not always entirely accurate. The company that did the service for us used the standard lyrics for most of the songs; so if an artist took poetic license with the lyrics on a particular song and tweaked them in some way, then that would not be reflected in the closed captioning.

As far as the station logos are concerned, WPIX did not superimpose their logo on their main broadcast for Channel 11 here in New York, nor did they do it on their national coverage on their cable/satellite station, Superstation WPIX. They also didn't display their logo on their local Antenna TV affiliate coverage here in New York as well. I cannot speak to the other Tribune affiliates, but I know many of them unfortunately did indeed elect to display their station logos on the screen during the broadcast.

RE:Yule Log Newbie

Chip,

I was sort of thinking that they would probably have used the standard verses on the songs and then they may have even done then on the instrumental versions where there wasn't any singing at all.  But I didn't know that Closed Captioning was available.  But it was interesting to find out.

I have noticed that when I have gone the the ER for one reason or another, that they have HDTV's in the rooms and they have the Closed Captioning on the screen, and they often omit words that were being said but you can clearly hear them.  Then they even add things likde "phone ringing" "police siren" "doorbell"  They often use the characters name too so you know who it saying what.

But I guess for people who need to use Closed Captioning, that it is helpful to them to get an idea of what is being said even if it isn't 100% accurate.

I did look at my VHS copy of WGN America's 2-hour broadcast as I don't think I made a DVD of it and their logo was onscreen for the most part the entire broadcast.

It's good to know that WPIX didn't superimpose their station logo over their main broadcast in New York, but alas I wasn't able to view it at all this year except for my 2010 broadcast from WPIX.  So I don't know it any other affiliates either Tribune or Antenna TV did or not.  I really wish I could get Dish Network back.

I miss Lionel's portion of the news and sometimes he has the whole studio cracking up.  I also miss The Honey Mooners and missed WPIX Thanksgiving Day and Christamas programming in November and December.

I just think the station logo detracts from the viewing pleasure.  If I can do a still a program that is in B&W on our Antenna TV Affiliate, I will post the image so you can see how distracting it is because it isn't transparent.

I guess it's just an unfortunate sign of the times but you would think that for this one occasion, they wouldn't superimpose their logo on the screen durning the Yule Log broadcast.  Also, the person watching that particular station would know what one it was, so why do they have to remind them by superimposing their logo onscreen?

Susan,

Just to let you know that with the closed captioning for the Yule Log, the lyrics are not displayed for the instrumental songs.

As for the on-screen station logos, yes, I agree that they are quite intrusive and annoying.

Oh OK,

Thanks Chip,  I was just wondering if they might have done the lyric for the instrumentals but now I know that they didn't.  But too, if anyone else knows anyone who might be hearing impared or not know the words, this would be a way for them to let them know that there is Closed Captioning availabe.

Thanks again.
