I really missed being able to check in with you folks the last few days.

And I got to thinking about how the disaster preparedness guides urge people to set up an emergency out-of-area contact, where family members and friends can check in.

After a couple of days of not being able to get in the The Yule Log I posted a message on All Things Christmas, and this morning got a message from one of their contributors letting me know that The Yule Log was back in business.

The value of The Yule Log for me is not in the software, but rather the nice group of people who check in here regularly, whom I've come to regard as online friends.

So, I'm wondering, is there another Christmas themed web site that many or most of you also visit, that I could add to my bookmarks,  so that we could keep in touch in the event of The Yule Log being unavailable to us?

Also, maybe some of us could trade email addresses, so we could let each other know when The Yule Log comes back online after being closed for a while.

Will,

Yes, it's good to have TheYuleLog.com Message board back up.

There are a ton of Christmas themed groups out there, but if it's music, especially Christmas music, then this is the place to be.

There are several Christmas Groups on Yahoo Groups.  Then there is My Merry Christmas which has links to all kinds of Christmas Groups  There is Christmas Top 50  Which has 50 sites you can click on.  There is Christmas Junkie They all usually require you to sign up, but it's free and through these groups you can find others.

Yep, glad to see it back up!

CluelessInSeattle - funny you mention allthingschristmas.  A couple of years ago I found it, joined, and posted for a few weeks.  Then people were talking about decorating for Christmas and showing outside links.  I had just found some guy (while web surfing) in the NE US who had a stellar display and showed it, and previous years' displays on his site.  I posted the link in a reply and ended up getting banned for life!  The thread as well as others had numerous outside links.  I tried contacting the mods but they never answered.  Later when checking a thread I'd posted to, one mod stated that I was more intent to publicize my website than participate in the forum.  This was after I had written a lengthy note stating it was not my site, nor did I even live within 1000 miles of the guy with the Christmas display.  It still has me scratching my head.  Luckily, the event prompted more searching and I found this place.  I've learned a lot here...but feel more green than when I first arrived!!!

Thanks, Susan, for those links.

Yes, Christmas music collecting is my main interest.  Followed closely by Christmas movies and TV shows.

So, of course, The Yule Log is the best site on the web for that.

But, if The Yule Log were to go dark again, is there a single web site you could recommend where we Yule Loggers could check in to keep each other company until the lights come back on again at The Yule Log?  Do you ever run into other Yule Loggers when you're web surfing those other sites you mentioned?

Hi Will,

You're welcome.  Alas, I don't know of any site that we could all go to when TheYuleLog.com message board is down.  The reason being, is we all don't necessarily use the same username when we sign in to other sites.  Then too, we don't always mention our first name, so it would be hard to tell if any particular member on those other sites is also a member of TheYuleLog.com message board.  Another problem, is the other Christmas sites may not have anything to do with discussing The WPIX Yule Log or asking questions about a particulars Christmas song or artist etc.  They have sites where people discuss sending Christmas cards.  How they decorated for the Holidays and when do they start.  just to give you an idea that these other sites are nothing like our sited and you have to admit that TheYuleLog.com is a unique site compared to all the others out there.

If our site is down, but Aimoo.com is up an running, you could always use the mail Icon that is on the top of the page on Aimoo.com  It's to the right after your user name, and Sign Out, there is an icon of a person which would be for your profile, than an icon for images, and then an icon that looks like an envelope and you could use that to message other members on TheYuleLog.com message board.

But too, if there is a foreseen problem with the message board "Chip" will usually let us know and if it is something that is unforeseen, he will try to let us know through our regular email addresses that we used when we signed up.

I agree with Susan.  When it comes to Christmas music, this is the place to be.  I found this site as a result of an internet search for information on the Jack Halloran Singers ("Christmas Is A-Comin'").  That was a few years ago and I don't remember now the string of events which eventually led me here, but I do recall reading a discussion about the origin of the Harry Simeone Chorale version of "The Little Drummer Boy" and how the song was first recorded by the Jack Halloran Singers.  The website escapes me, but I think someone had posted some erroneous information and Chip set the record straight.

That's how I found Chip's name and so I came to visit this site as my definitive source for all Christmas music information.   This is the place to learn of new releases such as the complete Perry Como collection and the Mantovani reissue a couple years ago.  I believe it was here I also learned that instrumental Christmas music by the Buckingham Strings, the kind heard on those old beautiful music stations, was available for download under the name Tony Osborne.

Isn't it great having someone with Chip's knowledge, not only for music, but for movies and television, too?  Something on here that was really memorable was reading about Alvin Greenman, the actor who played Albert in Miracle On 34th Street.

Jim,

I would trust Chip's information more than anyone else out there. He has amassed so much information because of his contacts with people in the Music Business, the Record Companies, Family or Family Spokesperson for deceased artists.

He has shared a letter from Kenneth Mantovani, he Knows Mitch Thrower, who's' father is Fred Thrower (The creator of The WPIX Yule Log) He has Cousin's in the music business (all which he has mentioned here on the message board) So who better to go to for finding out about a particular song or artist? He's even a Classic Movie Buff so he has information about them too. But I would guess he probably has more information about Christmas Music.

A few people have mentioned to Chip that he should write a book about Records being he has the most accurate information of anyone I know of, even books/magazines that specialize if this often have inaccuracies. Ted Neely and Gold Mine.

But a book takes a lot of time to write and then can you imagine how thick it would be?, if he included all the information about the albums, the artwork, if there were re-issues and just so much more information that could be included in a book.

So in conclusion, this is the best place to come to for information. If he doesn't know the answer immediately, because of his archives, and having to search through them, but he eventually comes up with an answer for us.

Thank you Chip for all the effort you put into the Website, Message Board and the help you give us all.

OK, since it looks like there's no fall-back web site where we could hang out and keep each other company in the event of The Yule Log going dark again; would any of you be willing to exchange email addresses with me?

Sort of like being stuck in an elevator in a skyscraper during a blackout; we'd at least have someone to make conversation with while waiting for the lights to come back on.

P.S.  One nice thing that came from Chip taking the Message Board down for a couple of days was that he cited the bug in the "Today" feature.  Up to then, I hadn't known about that feature, and instead had been wending my way through the various forums like a rat in a maze each time I logged in.  Now I use it every day!  Thanks for that heads up, Chip!

Thank you most kindly Jim and Susan for your flattering words and strong endorsement of me, my website and message board and what I do. It's truly my pleasure to help folks in any way I can. The work I do for the Yule Log broadcast, the Yule Log.com website and message board, and in getting classic Christmas LPs released on CD is truly a labor of love for me.

In the event the Yule Log is down, you can use Facebook to keep in touch. After you sign in, do a search for The Yule Log Appreciation Association. All are welcome to join.

I hope Chip, doesn't mind my chiming in here.  The Yule Log on Facebook has no connection to The Yule Log. Website or this Message board other than the name and that The Yule Log originated on WPIX TV and this website and message board are dedicated to The WPIX Yule Log.

The Yule Log on Facebook is a Community, and was created by WPIX TV.  There aren't any discussions on Facebook's Yule Log about the music that we discuss here and other things.

Also, the people who are friends with The Yule Log on Facebook may not even be familiar with this website.  There is a second site for The Yule Log and it's described as a TV Show, but the picture they used is not the Fireplace from The WPIX Yule Log.

A few members here are on Facebook and have checked "Like" for The Yule Log on Facebook but the majority of members here on this message board are probablly not even on Facebook, but that is just a guess because we sometimes have different user names.

I'm not saying there is anyting wrong with Facebook's Yule Log being it is the Legitimate WPIX Yule Log and is maintained by someone from WPIX, but it isn't a place where people here can discuss things like we do here, so if the message board is down, the Facebook Yule Log really isn't the place to ask questions about music that isn't on The Yule Log Soundtrack and all other discussions including Chip's "In The Spotlight" here where Chip, will spotlight a particular artist, especially if they have passed away recently i.e. Andy Williams.  He also spotlights other artists from The Yule Log soundtrack and doesn't just talk about their Christmas music, but posts other videos of thier other music.

Chip, I apolgize that this isn't coming out the way I meant it to sound and maybe I should have just let you respond, but I have been here a long time and feel comfortable enough to chime in if I am able to.  Sometimes my information isn't 100% accurate, and if it isn't, it will be corrected.

I just don't want people to get the wrong idea and think that if Aimoo is down which is the hosting site for the message board and therefore the message board would be down, that the Facebook Yule Log would be the place where we could meet.

Fanoftheyulelog, I know you are trying to help, and yes, people could probably meet there, but it isn't set up like a message board or Forum and again not everyone who is a member here is not a member of Facebook and the members of the Facebook Yule Log don't necessarily know about this message board.  So basically all we could do is ask how each other is doiing?  Being there is no way to have access to all the information that is on this message board.

There hasn't even been much activity over at the Facebook Yule Log, and it has 725 Likes.  There really isn't any acivity there except something from 2009, 2011 and a couple from this year.  I think as Christmas gets closer there will be a post from whomever maintains it that it might have a post that would be like this  "Be sure to watch me on 12/??/2012 from ??:?? - ??:??".

Chip, again, if I am out of line here, I apologize again.  But I think you understand what I am trying to get across.

I'll admit that I'm not a facebook user.  This is partly due to the fact that I hate the interface, partly because I don't much care for pics of the awesome dessert a friend had on vacation, and mostly because they play fast and loose with personal information in ways that make privacy advocates shudder.  I prefer to control with whom and how I communicate.  That said, I have a good many friends who use it in one capacity or another.  I can see some utility here and there, but I've simply made the decision to dump it early on.  Luckily, I didn't provide them with much info before I figured out it wasn't for me.  I still get email from them at a dump email address...several years later.  Look up the folks who have left facebook and see a number of horror stories.  Ever try to kill your account?  Even if you think you succeed, your old account is still there.  I'm not trying to sway anyone here.  I just think the way facebook is portrayed as the haven for discussion is both overrated and glosses over the problems it presents.  For those interested, I'm not going to get long(er) in the tooth here, you won't have to search long to get to the Facebook problematic areas online.  If you dig it, that's fine.  Some of us don't.

Facebook definitely doesn't care about your privacy and if you play any games, or use any of their Apps. expect to get tons of SPAM emails.

I blocked access to all games and apps for the most part and my SPAM email has dropped to almost nothing.

But I do get posts on my wall from people or organizations I know nothing about and I have my privacy setting to Friends Only.

Also, Facebook has hurt people applying for jobs, because prospective employers look up these applicants on Facebook and if they happen to find them and see somethings they don't like, they won't hire that person.

All Facebook cares about is itself and I guess, it's just the 1 owner now even though it was 2 college friends who came up with the idea and 1 cheated the other out of millions and he won in court, but that's another story.

I don't trust Facebook, but it's the only way I can stay in touch with some family members.
