(1) You may not be aware of this, but 1930s' child superstar Freddie Bartholomew had a very checkered career after WWII because he had grown up, and he eventually switched to television and behind-the-camera work. He was the television director of WPIX from 1949 through 1954. I found this out while researching Freddie for his Wikipedia article (which I wrote most of). Broadcaster Guy LeBow, a fellow WPIX employee, devotes an entire small chapter, which is both sad and hilarious, to his experiences with Freddie (or Fred, as he was known by then) at the station in his book, Watch Your Cleavage, Check Your Zipper! A couple of the stories are recounted at the end of this: Freddie Bartholomew: Part 3.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you with connections to WPIX had any further information about Freddie, or any resources/access to stories about him? His post-Hollywood life is unbelievably obscure and almost completely undocumented.

(2) To make this post more topical, I'll discuss my checkered relationship with The Yule Log. Even though I lived in Manhattan from 1979 to 1992, I deliberately did not own a TV for most of that time (I decided it was rotting my brain). So I wasn't really cognizant of The Yule Log until I viewed the 1990 film Metropolitan, in which the lead character watches the program on Christmas Day. Since I've seen that movie over a dozen times, I was then well aware of what The Yule Log was when I bumped into this site a few days ago!

All the folks at the station who worked with Freddie are long gone. Fred Thrower (former President/GM and creator of the Yule Log) would have been the best source of information, but he died in 1999.

MMMKay thanks, Chip. :)

By the way, I'm not getting e-mail notices of replies even though I always check the box. Is anyone else having these problems? I think the only way I've been able to force e-mail notifications is to click that pushpin icon above a thread, but then I get a notice of my own post as well!

No, you're not the only one. Unfortunately, Aimoo is having issues with the email notification service.

Ah, OK thanks C. Well, that just gives me an excuse to hang around the board more, eh? :)
