It it Thanksgiving weekend and my home is now decorated for Christmas.  That is how I chose to spend Black Friday.  Beats going to a mall!

When the sun set, I turned on the lights for the first time this season while Percy Faith's Music of Christmas played in the background.  Yes it's officially Christmas at my house!

Decorating this year has a special meaning as I've lost a loved one just this week.  My cousin, with whom I spent many Christmases passed away at age 68.  He will be buried tomorrow.

Christmas will be different this year but despite the heaviness in my heart, I will enjoy it as best I can.  I've been down this road before and always found Christmas to be very therapeutic.  It's times like these when as the song goes, I need a little Christmas!

Sorry to hear about your cousin, Frank... 68 is way too young to go. Although, I must say you have a good attitude in dealing with your loss this year.

Moral of this sad story is that life is indeed too short, which is why I decorate so early. I put up my tree on October 26th and the rest of my Christmas decorations on November 1st right after I took the Halloween decorations down. As I said last month on the board: it's funny, because in January, even after putting everything up as early as I do, it seems like it was hardly up at all. The time just goes so doggone fast.

Nice to see you back on the board.

Frank,

I'm so sorry for your recent loss too.  I lost my longitme companion in July and this Christmas will be difficult.  But I did manage to put my tree up on November 1st.  I had to move to a much smaller place since the loss of my companion, and the property management company doesn't allow any outdoor decorations so I am bummed because I can't set up my Blowmolds or other outdoor lights this year.

I'm also limited as to what I can do indoors being I went from 6 large rooms down to 2 very small rooms, but I do have a few lights in my windows and would like to run some along the perimiter of my living room where the wall meets the ceiling, but it's hard to get thumbtacks to stay in and 9 out of 10 times they bend before I can get them into the wall.  I tried tape, but the lights are too heavy and I can't use nails or screws because they would leave a large a hole and that would be considered damage to the apartment.

I really hate HUD Subsidized Housing.  They have so many rules and regulations, but I have to make do with what I am able.  I really do love to decorate for Christmas and it saddens me that I can't do as much in my new apartment.  But any decorating is better than none at all.

Chip,

So far, to my knowledge, with the exception of stores, you are the only person I know who puts their Christmas tree up before Halloween.  I have tried to do it but neighbors complained so I wait until November 1st.  (I know that being it is inside my own apartment, that I have a right to do what I want, but people didn't like seeing my tree in the window before Halloween) If I had the space, I would love to leave my Christmas tree up all year, but I would have to do a lot of dusting and I have a lot of vintage ornaments and wouldn't want to take the chance of breaking any of them.  I do usually leave my decorations up until between January 7th. and 12th.  If I had outdoor lights up, they would stay until it was warmer because the wires would be too stiff from the cold or even buried in snow but they wouldn't be lit after the 12th. of January.

Susan,
One suggestion with hanging up stuff! 3M makes a product called "Command Strips" which come in different sizes. You put an adhesive strip on the spot where you want to hang something and then push the hook onto the adhesive strip. They work fairly well! I use them a lot. Works best on glass or other smooth surfaces but I use them on plaster walls as well! I use the smallest ones on mirror and glass to hang lights and garlands. You need bigger ones for the heavier stuff!

Hope this helps! Merry Christmas!

Ray

Frank,

I thank you for your condolences too.  It will be difficult, but I'm sure I will get through Christmas with GOD's help.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ray,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have been noticing that other tenants have been putting up outdoor lights, so I will probably do that next year.

It's been getting too cold to try and mess with stiff wires now but in November, it's usually warmer outside.
