I was fortunate enough to have the foresight to tape the last airing of the Yule Log in 1989. I had a hunch that WPIX was thinking about scrapping the program when I saw how they had pushed the airing of it on Christmas morning earlier than it had been on and they didn't seem to promote it as much. For those who didn't see the last few airings of the program, I can say thatin the end, the film had been chopped so badly that it is a minor miracle and a credit to WPIX that they cared enought to restore it as well they did.By '89, the program was two hours BUT had been severely edited. My recording of that year preserves that some songs were cut right in the middle, there were long pauses of silence, the usual half-hour pan out and then pan-in was replaced with a jump shot etc. Sad. When the program reaired for the first time in years I compared it to the tape of 89 and I couldn't believe the excpetional quality! The 89 film LOOKS tired and old and worn.On another note, I don't recall seeing anything after last year's airing regarding how it rated etc. Anyone know?

An average of 275K viewers in NYC for the four hours between 8 am and Noon.  This according to Variety (12/28/04) in the "Christmas Presents" section.

That's a nice average for Christmas morning! Considering everything today, that Ch 11 is not a network, no more tv guide or newspaper ads for the show etc, the show does well!

Does anyone know how many viewers tuned in 2005?

I was Also fortunate enough to have taped the last (in 1989,just before moving to Florida-and just before it made a remarkable "Comeback" in 2001) Yule Log as well! That year, the show was wilted down to a anemic 2 and a half hours! I'm so GLAD they've FINALLY restored it to its original time frame(IT'S ABOUT TIME!!)! I'm looking forward to re-recording it (only THIS TIME..on WGN superstation Channel 9!) Looking forward to that...Michael boyce

Michael,

The original Yule Log presentation consisted of 3 hours of original music. In 2001, when WPIX brought the program back, thanks to Joe's write-in campaign to get it reinstated, the station deleted an hour's worth of music and aired an abridged 2-hour version. Then, when they saw how well the show was doing in the ratings, they decided to capitalize on it by airing the same 2-hour abridged program back-to-back. So, at least up to last year's 2005 broadcast, the program was still not being shown in its entirety.

As for this year's 40th anniversary presentation, well -- all I can say is Joe and I will have something to say about this in the coming weeks -- so stay tuned.

In my own opinion,The Yule Log should win an Emmy (or several, for that matter!) for its longevity...who would've thought it would be,along with "Frosty The Snowman","How The Grinch Stole Christmas" and "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol",among others, it would be still talked about...still adored by millions (Including me,of course!)! It still boggles people's minds outside N.Y. ...BUT,OF COURSE,WE KNEW IT ALL ALONG,NOW,DIDN'T WE? SPREAD THE WORD AROUND...THE YULE LOG IS BACK....THANK THE LORD ON THAT!! YIPIEEE!! Michael Boyce
