I had an interview yesterday with a real estate development firm. The owner also owns a bank, is politically active for the wrong party, has a foundation for his charitable activities, and is a very successful, high-maintenance kind of guy. This is what his employees made a point of telling me about him.I gather they wanted to make sure I would be okay with catering to the whims of a successful multi-millionaire.I think that will depend on how much it pays.?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comAnyhow, they called today and want a second interview, so I must not have blown it.I am going to go out this weekend and get some more bankerish interview clothes. This is a very formal work environment. The office space is just beautiful.I will not be able to work from home.I?e sent out about 8-10 resumes, but I haven? had any other interview requests.I really nailed the cover letter on this one. Maybe the first time will be the charm. The positive vibes and happy thoughts are helping bunches.Keep ?m comin?Posted on the Fringe and the Foyer for my clique-y best buds.

It sounds like it could be a great job.  My only question is what kind of work/life balance are you going to be able to strike if you decide to take the job?  You ds is still little, right?  OTOH, maybe it will bring in enough $ that it won't matter.

Woo hoo!  Keep us all posted.

Yeah, that's been in the back of my mind, too.  And I hope (hope) that if they offer me the job, they'll let me finish the semester.

The job has some variety - on-site trouble shooting and some automation stuff.  It sounds like it will be high stress, but I hope it will also pay well.  But then, they haven't offered me the job yet.

Hey, after you win this cherry job, I'm going to have to discuss a couple of things with your new boss. Mainly, we need to make sure that the new position, while demanding, will still leave room for your Foyer Time. I'm sure he'll be reasonable. Please e-mail me with the appropriate contact information, and I will be glad to deal with this situation.

GOOD LUCK AND KNOCK THEM DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most of all, tho, just be yourself and have fun.

toodles.

PS. Wanna give me some advice? I've got an interview myself next Monday with one of the government agencies that I applied to.

"Wanna give me some advice?"  PF, you so funny.  I'm the Advice Queen!

Be direct.  Prepare answers to the questions "what are your three greatest strengths" and "what is your biggest weakness."  Couch the latter in terms of recognition and what you're doing to overcome it.

Within reason, just say what you think, and don't worry about letting some personality out.  Be yourself.

Wear a suit.  I didn't, but I'm going to the next time...

IMO, most jobs are won by the candidate who's most likeable.  The other people in the office will want to work with someone they like.

Also, governmental agencies, from the CIA to the Patent Office, want worker bees.  They want people who will do what their bosses want them to and make their bosses look good.  If you want to change the world, the gov't is not the place for you.

Good luck, you two babes.  I expect to hear about your new jobs very soon!

Question for you guys: The department I am interviewing at has a webpage which, while adequate, doesn't really reflect the forward thinking tone they are trying to adopt. Do you think it would be out of place for me to design a mockup of what I think their webpage or other promotional materials could look like and show it to them at the interview? Kinda like a homework assignment, but not....just to show them what I could do with their material and to perhaps show a little bit of initiative and interest.

Also, I've seen it recommended on job sites that you prepare 3 or 4 questions to ask an employer. Again this is supposed to show initiative and interest while making sure that you are matched with a company you like. What do you guys think of this? I tried it on the interview that got me the job with the magazine in Sandy Eggo, but since my boss was Mormon, I am still unsure how much of that was me, or my Mormon background.

Gracie: That seems to be pretty true. I know my bf's workplace won't hire people they don't get along with, no matter how talented and qualified they are. The hiring process there includes a company lunch of sorts, with five or six other employees, and they see how they interact with the team in a non-traditional environment where their guard isn't up and they aren't in interview mode. (I was there for that part of it actually and I got to meet all the wives and girlfriends of the other employees before he was ever even hired.)

PF, that is an EXCELLENT idea!  Hell, I'd hire you just on that thought alone.

Yes, asking questions is a very good thing.  Gosh, I didn't even think of doing that.  (Why are these people giving me a 2nd interview?  They must have liked me.  Maybe it was my inadvertent sucking up?)

Don't ask questions about things like hours, benefits or vacation, though.  The time to ask those questions is during negotiation about the $$, after you have an offer.

Well, since it would be a government job, I can look up the benefits online already.

Nanna, darlin', the writer of that article lives in Massachusetts.  There haven't been any new jobs in that state since the Johnson Administration.  They have it bad even when the rest of the world is flush.  And it's one of the most expensive places I've seen.

There, there, now.  Stop reading stuff like that.  Go take a nice walk and clear your head.

Hey, Nanna, when's that second interview? Is it next week? Whenever it is, good luck. Be loose, and just let your innate competence and good nature show through. People hire people who they think they would enjoy working with. It's all about personality and fortunately, you got the goods on that one, baby! [cleavage wouldn't hurt, either...] Knock 'em dead!

It's Tuesday, at 1:00.  I hope to exude competence, confidence, and good natured-ness.  This interview, like the other one, is with a woman, so cleavage won't help.  Thanks for the good wishes.  I'm trying to stay positive.

This interview, like the other one, is with a woman, so cleavage won't help.

You never know.

In other news, my interview today went pretty well. I was the first applicant interviewed, so that makes me simultaneously nervous, anxious, and relieved. Nervous and anxious, because I have to wait nearly two weeks for them to interview the remaining eight applicants. (Which they have to--they can't offer the job until they've seen everybody eligible who applied.) And then a little relieved, because at least there's no chance they've already fallen in love with a particular applicant, and are merely giving the rest of us face time as a formality. If anything, I get to be the benchmark.

But they liked my mockup web site, and they enjoyed my art (and the interviewer even read my comic online) and we got along pretty well it seemed, conversing for the better part of an hour and a half. (Maybe even an hour and forty five minutes.) So....it seems like I have a good shot.

Good luck tomorrow, Nanna. I'll have my fingers crossed for you too.  (PS. You guys can send out positive vibes for me too--I've still got a followup email and phone call to go.)

PF, it's great that you took something concrete to show them.  Two weeks is forever to wait, though!

I had my 2nd interview today and I'm a bit bemused about what to do next.  The woman I was supposed to interview with was not there (sick child; this is a good thing, in that it means that if you have a sick child they don't expect you to come to work anyways).  But, and here's the thing, the guy I met with instead didn't really seem prepared to spend much time with me.  We talked briefly about what they do to interface with the downtown office; made some chit-chat about living in New Orleans, and then I took a test to identify my interpersonal style.  He said they are talking to two or three people.  If the other folks got to meet with my absent appointment, I'm concerned that I'll be at a disadvantage because I didn't actually meet with her - she's the longest term employee in the company (23 years), and it's likely she is the eyes/ears for the Big Cheese himself.

So, on the one hand, I don't want to dis the guy I met with, 'cause he was a nice guy and it was a very pleasant conversation, and I may just be imagining a problem where non exists.  But on the other hand, I don't want to miss out on an opportunity to get what seems like an interesting and decently paying job that's right up my alley just because somebody else had a sick kid.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Nanna,

You might consider giving a call to the woman who couldn't meet you. Tell her you're sorry that you couldn't meet with her and give her another opportunity to do so, if she wants to. Couldn't hurt, if you do it pleasantly enough.

Good luck for both of you.

nanna -

I agree with King sansfoy.  Maybe tomorrow, give her a quick call and express interest in the position, and in meeting with her again if she's available.  I'd preface the whole conversation with a comment about how much you enjoyed meeting with Mr. _______.  You won't lose points by expressing an interest and disappointment that you weren't able to meet with her, IMO.

Interesting you wound up meeting with a man after all.  SEE, I told you cleavage wouldn't hurt!  You should know by now to listen to me!

Good luck.

Ahh I am just kidding nanna.. I am sorry about the job.. This economy SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS.. Hold your head up girl.. Smile and remind yourself over and over again how awesome you are and how qualified and talented.. Don't let things get you down.. I had a friend that is an incredible chef.. It took her a bit to find a good job and she started doubting herself but she kept her head up and ofcourse things have worked out and she has a good job.. It wasn't her dream job but it is solid and a good company.. How are your classes going?  What do you think of college so far? BTW why did you decide on a bachelors rather than one of those 10 month paralegal courses etc?  Just curious?

Well Nanna, Here is one for you from another angle.  I have faithfully paid my tithing since the day I was baptized.  Up until about 9 months ago willingly.  Up until Wednesday I as unemployed for over 3 years and living off of savings supporting a wife and six kids from 18 to 7 in age.

It was not until I started to believe that paying my tithing to the LDS church was only going to further the Morg's agenda but do VERY little for me except drain my resources that things started to trickle in the right direction.

So what does that mean Nanna?  Was that inspiration and blessings for not believing in paying my tithing to the Morg?  Should I bear my testimony?
