http://www.chamaric.com/ I mentioned this software for Windows PCs in the bedding-in thread but nobody picked up on it, so here it is again. Maybe you can't read enough French, or maybe the idea of using computers is anathema to craftsmen, but this looks like an extremely useful and well thought-out tool aimed squarely at tuners of free-reed instruments, although it can be used for other instruments too. You define or choose a tuning scheme for all the box's voices - you can listen to the vibrato this will give on the computer before you start - and then you check each reed against it. In addition to the visual display a voice will apparently tell you (in French of course) whether the reed needs to be sharpened or flattened. Schemes can be saved and re-used and you can save a job in progress for later finishing. You can even choose different pre-set temperaments other than equal and I think define your own. It costs 300 euros can be used with or without a pedal and a push-pull switch that you can buy for an extra 50 euros - I'm not quite sure how it works, but you capture the sound with it rather than using a microphone connected to your PC if I'm not mistaken. You can download a trial version (allows 40 captures). Any interest? Steve

Another piece of tuning software (in English, also free trial) was mentioned in a recent post in the Squeezebox newsgroup (rec.music.makers.squeezebox). It's at http://www.instrument-tuner.com/

I use APTuner, (free download shareware, but inexpensive), which I find a reasonably good tool, though you can get false readings at the extremes, so the things on the sides of your head are also useful (and free!)

I have been using Korgs for years, but the screen keeps getting smaller, especially when I can't find my glasses, whereas with APTuner you have a nice big window on your moniter. It is at least as accurate as a Korg if set up properly, and I do periodically check the results against my trusty Korg just in case....

Having come to computers a bit late in life, I guess I'm still a bit distrustful of computers, rightly or wrongly. I run an accounting programme too, but always check the figures manually . However, this is thread creep, so I'll stop here.
