Has anyone got the abc notation for the John Spiers's version of Stoney Steps? Heard him play it at Whitby a few days ago and it's a tune I've kept meaning to learn. Went to a really good workshop of his at the festival. The best Barn Dance Band there was anmed Dan Quinn's All Stars for the occasion : with no rehearsal at all they really wowed the dancers. Best thing I've heard since the Bismarks stopped. The line-up was Dan, Jon Boden plus 3 more fiddlers (sorry I don't know your names!) Mary Humphries on keyboard and Anahata on Cello, crowned with Simon Ritchie on Drum Kit (complete with cow bells etc. etc.). Fantastic festival again, and very well done since the new team took over this year from Malcolm Storey.

Hi Everyone! I've found the tune now on a John Spiers CD, but apparently he learnt it from my friend Anahata! it really is a lovely tune. Looking forward to learning it.

In case you wanted to know, there is a very good version of it in the Black Sussex Book. It is in C, but is otherwise very similar to John Spiers' (they are after all, the same tunes).

Hi Maggie,
In "Hardcore English" - Barry Callaghan's (RIP) new book, published posthumously by EFDSS, and also available from EATMT, there is an extensive section about the Stoney Steps tune with several different versions from various sources, including one which is pretty much the same as John Spiers's.

The English Folk Dance and Song Society printed a book called the "Sussex Tune Book" - edited by Anne Loughran and Vic Gammon with music drawn by Martin Carthy - in 1982. It is full of 120 jems including the aforementioned Hornpipe (which is in G not C, I confused it with Morgan the Rattler which this book has in C).
The book's cover is black, except for a picture of Micheal Turner's grave, the editor's and drawer's name, and the title. I think I've heard people call it the Black Sussex book somewhere, but I may be creating memories.

Thanks for info, I'll look into that.
You might be interested in the Lewes Favourites. The Lewes Arms folk club (Lewes is the county town of East Sussex)publish a book of tunes called the Lewes Favourites which IMHO is brilliant. You can also download it in Noteworthy or ABC format.

That is a very cool collection, the Sussex Book has a fair number of the tunes there as well!

Really great info. Have looked at both the links and am really grateful. I've also now written out the dots for the tune from John's CD track, and can play it brilliantly on the piano accordion and even on the hammered dulcimer, but the range is two whole octaves, and I need a bit more time to get it right on the old D/G :-) Thanks for all the pointers everyone. Maggie x

I agree - It is a great site isn't it?! I've used it lots in the past, but this particular version isn't there, but not to worry - it's all now in my head and notated on computer.
Thanks Tom

The "best" source is IMO JC's Tune Finder it searches many more sources than The Session which only has its own list. JC's uses The Session as one of its sources.

Hi Lester
Just followed your link and had a quick butchers. I have a minor whinge: I found a couple of my own tunes on this site, uncredited, but that isn't a massive problem. The problem is that the ABC files on one are pretty inaccurate and on the other, also slightly awry, there's someone else's "C" music added on to my original, again uncredited. Please don't misread me - I'm not red-faced with prima donna indignation, just making an observation.
Probably just the healthy evolution of tradition.
Cheers
Martin

John Chambers (JC) has written a web crawler which wanders around finding ABC files on the net. So, although he servers them the file contents are mostly other peoples work so the quality of the ABCs is variable (as they are everywhere) and not many people fill in the C: composer tag even if they know who wrote them. But I quite understand your point of view.
