At my center we translate TTY caller's ASL to conversational English, but type voice person's response verbatim. We had a workbook of examples to translate, it was like school. I don't think typos were specifically covered, but I've corrected them in surveys and in training and never received any negative feedback on it.

I do standard stuff like "me want go shop store tmw" without even thinking about it. I think it makes the calls go much smoother, less "(nervous laughing) I have no idea what they're saying..." from the voice person. If the ASL is extremely thick? I do my best, and if the voice person doesn't understand it they can ask to have the TTY user clarify. Even the most difficult stuff gets worked out and understood within a minute or two. It takes patience. I've also had a few (not the majority) blind TTY users who only get about 30% of their message down correctly. You just do your best.

Being given the freedom to translate some of the TTY messages is one of the only ways I really feel we're able to facilitate the call process so it's more enjoyable or productive for both people.

Wow. That was a rant. Anyway? I don't translate scam calls or prank calls. The stupider these people sound? The better.

newOpp... strictly speaking, what you're doing is not by the book. It's not totally transparent. What I do in that situation (text user starts typing before the voice user is done speaking) ... I just treat it as what it is...someone interrupting another person. Basically, I start reading and interrupt the voice user just the way it would happen in real conversation. If you don't want to do that, I suppose you could interrupt and say something like "opr here, I'm sorry the person has begun typing again." Most people don't get mad at the operator for that, and I've seen some voice users really get onto their deaf friend for being rude and interrupting before it was their turn. Some people I know will just continue typing out the voice user, like you said, but that's not truly how the conversation should go (since it's doubtful th

We (not going to give my center name) just say "opr here the person is interrupting" or "opr here one moment pls the person is correcting" when they backspace or retype or whatever

Your company must have different rules about the ASL translation, because I've never heard of such.

Nor have I -- We've had it pounded into us over and over -- exactly as voiced -- exactly as typed. No "translations" no changes -- no nothing. Type everything you hear and voice everything typed. Simple.

When interrupted on full screen stop typing immediately

When interrupted on split screen continue typing

We recently got an update that when the internet person is using ga as punctuation ops can run paragraph or sentence together and voice only the final ga

Example:

Hi hunny ga I'm in the car on the way home ga Gonna stop at 7-11 for ice cream for the kids ga U feeling better qq ga Love u ga see u in about 5 mins ga

Voice as: Hi honey. I'm in the car on the way home. Gonna stop at 7-11 for ice cream for the kids. You feeling better? Love you. See you in about five minutes. ga

Helps with call flow.

Yeah, well, I have no problem with that.  I am absolutely mystified by deaf users who haven't figured out that the GA ("go ahead" for those of you deaf users who haven't figured it out) is not interchangeable with a period.  It's like someone on a two-way radio saying the word "over" and then continuing to talk.

Which only reminds me of how voice users who don't know how to use relay just LOVE to respond, replacing GA with "over..."  I'd just love to smack their cheeky little craniums.

As far as I'm concerned when it comes to pranks. Anything typed prior to the phone being answered is not part of the conversation. If they aren't smart enough to figure out that no one is on the line for me to relay what their typing, then oh well.

I always laugh at the clutzes that reach an ans mach and then leave some long, vulgar msg, then disconnect before I can redial. I think (Leaving msg pls hd) is pretty clear on what u are supposed to do.

Well I was taught by a guru that whether it was specific states or old relay or something like that that "go ahead" was not necessarily the term used and that some relay services from who knows where did use "over" or "stop" as the signal for the other person to respond so they dont bother me I even did a vco to voice call where both users would say "back to you" as the signal I thought it was kind of funny I didn't get upset over it at least they are using the relay concept properly I just understand it as a "ga" and process the call, and hope it lasts long enough that I don't have time  to get a prank call or fraud call before my next break in 5 minutes
