Yesterday Ideveloped this spot on the roof of my mouth way back where my back molar is. I don't see it, but it feels a little raw when I swallow water. I'm thinking it's oral cancer.

The spot doesn't hurt anymore. I'm guessing it's not oral cancer. Maybe I scratched the roof of my mouth while eating salt and vinegar chips.

Oral cancer is another thing that everybody gets all freaked out about.  I was at the dentist last week getting my teeth cleaned.  The hygienist who cleaned my teeth had been doing it for 22 years.  I asked her how many cases of oral cancer she had seen in 22 years.  She said 2, and both cases were at the base of the tongue, on the side.  That's why when you have your dental exams they have you stick out your tongue and they look at the back of your tongue, on the sides.  Many times you scratch the roof of your mouth, your gums, or your cheeks when eating something sharp like chips or hard crusty bread and you don't even realize you've scratched yourself.  The inside of your mouth is very sensitive, but heals quickly.  Val.

My dentist cleans my teeth. He's never told me to stick out my tongue. Does everybody else have to do it?
