Re:Are you a Clapham resident fed up with noise, fights etc disturbing your slep every weekend?

I have objected to every licence extension and change of use over the last five or six years all to no avail. You get sympathetic noises from your local councillor, but then the planning commitee divide on party lines and the buggers get their late licence. I would love to know how Aquuam got a licence. Their application wasn't even seen by the planning commitee but went through on "the nod", despite not having planning permission.
Reading between the lines, it's all very similar to "Boss" Tweed's New York at the end of the 19th century. If you have deep pockets you will get whatever you want in Lambeth!!

I couldnt agree more. Lambeth Council have run Clapham into the ground, no thoughts on the residence they just hand out late night licences willy nilly and yes of course they are corrupt and taking back handers, probably the most corrupt council in the UK! I'm moving out to Fulham, Clapham exists soley for the night clubs and bars these days, a real shame.

Fulham is not too different. The local council has complained too but are trying to do something about it. The problem is that Lambeth Council appears to have designated Clapham as an area for the drinks/bar industry and nothing else, therefore it attracts all the louts that go with it. If you look at it, most of what opens up in clapham apart from beauty salons are bars. Lambeth does not have an economic planning policy so planning of this nature is arbitrary and because you can make loads of money setting up a drinks bar in clapham that seems to be the norm. We need more quality retail shops, galleries and restaurants not souless bars that attract riff raff from across south london and beyond. As for the high street most claphamites steer clear of it on weekend nights when it is taken over by non residents out for a good time. Rather than leaving the area i think pressure should be placed on the council to make changes, they are currently consulting on barring consumption of alcohol in public spaces across the borough which is a good start. You can also influence that process so log on to the council's website.

I hope they don't ban alcohol on the Common - that would be step too far. Ssensible people that like to have a glass of wine with our picnics full of lovely goodies from Esca!

im sure they won't ban it from the common, most clapham folk are decent, but its the visitors that come drinking and mess up the place. They obviously don't live here and so do not give a hoot about the place. There's so much that the council can do in terms of physical enforcement but if they agree to open more bars than it's worth then they need to take responsibility for ensuring law, order and decency.

I too an thoroughly fed up with Clapham High Street on Friday and Saturday nights, and try to avoid it as far as possible - a sad state fo affairs where you don't want to go out near where you live. Let alone the mess that you see early the following mornings...

I have known clapham for over 13 years and lived here for over 7. Things are a lot better that the rough old days when the place looked like a third world and there were bars up over the off licence on the high street! (like the wild west). There have been a lot of improvements over recent years, but I am also a bit worried that we are reaching a "tipping point" where the big boozing Ibizia bars and crowds end up defining the neighbourhood. I have noticed a lot of flats in the area changing from homes for people to rented out flats with a constant stream of "to let" signs, sofas and rubbish chucked out on the street, and no respect for where they live. I want to live in an area where there is a good mix of people, where families and well as young people can enjoy life, but things seem to just moving towards a booze trash crowd who spend a couple of years here getting plastered and move on. I think some kind of limit on the opening on new boozers might help, but also need the council doing some creative thinking to bring some "soul" back to the place.

Yep totally agree.
When I moved here it had SHOPS, remember those !
At least three proper greengrocers including the really good one on the High Street just round the corner from Clapham North.
I saw the signs coming years ago.
It's a real shame. You need a mix of businesses, not just something that resembles a rubbish Spanish resort.
When people ask me what Clapham High Street is like, I say it's somewhere where people come to be sick on a Friday Night.
I'm selling my flat and I'm off to Balham.
