I can't help noticing that as soon as this new administration took
power, we had a cut in the funding for stock in libraries - down from
?00000 last year (which was to be maintained "for the forseeable
future") to ?60000. There is a moratorium on buying stock until
crisis budgeting has taken place. We may have refurbished premises if
any part of Revitalise goes ahead (in years to come) but what is the
use if there is nothing on the shelves and no money for the excellent
events which have taken place in recent years? Will we see the closure
of more libraries, as happened under the last Labour administration
(Clapham Park and Streatham Vale)? An unacceptable excuse would be the
"inherited financial situation" ruse. All new administrations say that. Why are libraries the scapegoat again? This from a party whose priorities are inclusion, equality and diversity - tell that to the people who can't afford books, films, music and computers. Use instead the ?00000 allocated for spin doctors (cf South London Press) for the people of Lambeth, not the politicians.

SURELY LIBRRARIES COULD SAVE MONEY BY NOT HOLDING WINE AND NIBBLES EVENINGS AND TO BE USED AS A LIBRARY SHOULD BE. PREHAPS THE CUT BACK SHOULD COME FROM COUNCILS WHERE THERE IS A POOR TURNOUT.

That is part of the function of a 21st century library. It is not just about books, but community involvement.

I WOULD NOT SAY THAT LIBARIES ARE SCAPEGOATS BUT IN SCOTLAND WE RUN OUR LIBARIES MORE EFFICENT THEN YOU DO IN ENGLAND

Quite right, Black Watch! Libraries should also be funded centrally by one of the richest countries in the world!

but surely danlo dog why all the details about the library surely there is more important issues in the world which people should take note off? and where the money should go to better use. in my time a library was a library no wine and nibbles what a complete waste of the tax peoples money. things have changed over the years. surely all the mod cons we have noe i.e computers in schools, internet cafes why is there the need to pump so much money in libraries. ok reading books yes! but now money needs to be spent on what we really need. sorry leave the libraries has they were and put money where it is well and trully needed!

Anonymous - you miss the point of modern libraries. They are the gateway to information, to job seeking, to training, to languages (including English) and to education. They are a central part of the community and are there to be used by everyone. They should, therefore, be treated as an important free (at point of service) resource.

To the anonymous posters: PLEASE register if you want to have a go at someone or at least include your email. YOur tone is overly agressive for this board and future posts will be removed unless you either tone it down a notch or register.
As to the wine and nibbles, surely we want BOTH a good selection of books AND a welcoming enviromnement (a wine and chese evening is unlikely to set back the budget by more than ?0 or so). Morte importaant it is rather alarming about the budget cuts given thtat the whole revitalise thing was sold on the "we really love libraries" sticker.

Blimey ?0 must represent .001% of the budget. It would encourage people to visit the library. I thought about going but did not make it - but it did make me think about going. I don't know what you do but is every single penny in your organisation spent on the most narrow definition of your action plan? is nothing spent on marketing or some other function.
Maybe the council should not waste money on Christmas decotrations, or fireworks, it should sweep the streets once every two weeks and spend the money on important things perhaps. You are being very pruritan - who are you BTW?
BTW I should have said in my last email PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELVES IN ANONYMOUS POSTS.

Tell me but if there are cut backs all around. I.e fire services, health services, then surely why should the libraries not also have a cut in there funding.
