Clapham Market on the High Street is a bloody mess and a complete eyesore. I don't want this kind of crap on our high street. The proposed development looks good and would suit that space - let's hope it's approved quickly.J.

I agree with GJ. There is toilet roll in the shops, and there are plenty of charity shops on CHST to get strange and weird clothes....but how crafty of Clapham Market. When they finally decide to build the proposed development...the market homies will be object thro loss of income...market rights etc. What happened to the cool French market on cinema street and the proposed Spanish one?? Much more useful than Bog Roll Market!

Watch this space.

Is the DVD guy still there?  That was something that the other shops in the High Street weren't offering...

There was also a really nice looking bread stall there one Saturday.

Woolies sell DVDs and this market cannot be compared to the gourmet market they have on Northcote Road.

It's simply got to go!

I totally agree... when the market was first set up, I though it was someones idea of a joke !...

Totally lowers the tone of the high street... and its not even as if its selling anything worthwhile,...

The worse bit is the 'put together in 5 minutes' stalls !... what happened ????

I don't think you quite got my point about the DVDs...

Anyway, no, it's not a patch on Northcote Road, and yes, I am in favour of something less scuzzy being put on that site.  So - what are we going to do about it?

Lobby All Bar One to come and save us?  How about Burger King?

The proposed mixed development photo next to the mark looks "nice".  Not sure what the mixed development is.

Hopefully not a scuzzy market!

Too right. That market thing is totally shit. In all seriousness, is there any way we can get rid of it. Does anyone know how to go about petitioning the council? That crappy market has probably knocked about 20% off the price of my house already. Get some new bars / restaurants / flats / gyms in there instead.

I sent a email to our local ward cllr and his response makes for interesting reading:

MY ORIGINAL E-MAIL
Did the makeshift "market" on Clapham Highstreet receive planning permission?

It is on the site on the old garage and it is a complete eyesore and completely
lowers the tone of Clapham.

I and many others are not at all happy with this development.

I see there is a noticed for a proposed mixed development on that site but
it is not clear what the development is or when it will be developed.

This market cannot be compared with the gourmet/craft market on Northecote road.

I would not be sorry to see it go.

Who is responsible for regulating this market and what is happening to the
approval process for the proposed development.

Many thanks for any information you can provide.

RESPONSE FROM CLLR Sanders

You have raised an issue which has been troubling both of us for a while.
I will try to answer your questions.

The market has not got planning permission - it was set up anyway.

We are not happy about it - inded, we have worked with Cllr Gentry (who
is copied into this email) to get Lambeth to shut it. The councillors whose
ward this is in have been strangely silent on the issue.

Cllr Gentry and us have assurances from officers that it will be shut. We
will need to take up these assurances. I do not know about the approval
process.

Sorry the answers are incomplete, but they represent what we know. We want
to see more markets - French and Farmers', the latetr to encourage small
business in the area - but not this, which is someone taking advantage.

Yours sincerely,

Cllr Darren Sanders (for him and Cllr Meader)

I was walking along the High Street Saturday afternoon and heard some poeple arguing in the market. Then a fight broke out between two girls and they really started going for it. It was horrile to watch two girls fighting. Luckily I was on the other side of the street and was able to avoid the fight. However, if I had been on the market side there would have been little I could have done to avoid it.

If the market attracts poeple like this - then it should definately be closed down.

Also - Cllr - does the proposed development have planning permission? If not then letting the market on their land causing an eyesore is probably the developers tactic/ ploy to getting permission. If so - just give the developer planning permission. The flats would look much better - you and I and everybody else knows that.

Clapham Market has revolutionised my life. As i suffer from IBS finding a large supply of affordable toilet paper had been a problem! Thanks to everyone at clapham  market for their efforts. As we do indeed live in a classfull society where there is an ever growing disparancy between the rich and the poor its could to know the area supports consumer needs on all levels......not just those who moved into the area in the last ten years with aspirations of making profit from properties. I'm sure you are all aware of the high rise council estates that still exist for those who do not have large disposable incomes.

Long Live Clapham High Street Market - the peoples market.

If you dont like it..................move.........and cash in on your beautifully maintained homes.

I have to admit day 2 of it's opening i rented a stall and made a tidy profit on all my surplus military gear from my marine days... I think we should chill out a little...it appears it will not last so utilise the best perfumed toilet roll in south London....

It was set-up illegally without planning permission, it STILL is a bloody eyesore and if the the events posted above are indicataive of the people running the stalls, present coming excepted Tony, then a good riddence will not be too soon.

Trading Standards & Office of Fair Trading found many, many irregulaties and shut a number of stalls.

Promoting enterprising businesses and supporting local startups is one thing - this type of shite is not what I personally want in my town and it appears the majority of people are in agreement with this.

The pathethic arguments about moving in during the last ten years to make a quick profit at the expense of  "locals" are not worth wasting my heavily champagne soaked breath on.  These are the same individuals of people that believe smashing in the windows of McDonalds/Starbucks is going to put an end to globalisation.  Have you actually read Naomi Klein's book?

Close the market and close it now!

I agree the market was an eye-sore. But it gave local people a chance to earn some money. I think that most people see only the middle class side of Clapham. The market however badly it was put together provided an alternative to the rest of the High Street. I passed there once and they had a really nice homemade bread, hand made soap and jewellery stall.

I spoke to a stall holder who was not happpy with it's construction and management but she had a good response from the locals.

It is - as always six of one and half a dozen of the other.

Ok, stop whinging on here - your time has come! Planning permission notices for the market have gone up (yesterday) on adjacent lampposts - you've got till September 9th to send in your objections to/support for the market. I'm afraid I didn't have the pen or the inclination to write down full details of who to contact, but interested parties can of course pop down the street with a notepad.

Hope this is helpful!

Yes, it's gone.

I was walking along the High Street on Saturday, and the garage was blocked off, with the stalls dismantled.

To be honest, it felt a bit sad.  Whatever the problems with the market, while it was going it livened up that spot next to Nando's, and the High Street now feels emptier without it.

If someone can get proper planning permission for it, and have a good range of stalls stocking stuff not easily available locally, I wouldn't have much objection to it re-opening.

It would be better than another development of flats, anyway!

I have just heard that the Planning bods have given permission for the market to reopen. This MAY be brought up at the meeting tonight.

$%*'`[claphamite]%*'`@Jimmy nail is about the only person I agree with on this matter!!! I am not originally from London and how close rich to poor live in such close proximity assumably riles these debates. The market was not that bad, it may not match some poser's ideals of whtas acceptable and whats not. Its enterprise regardless if theres a new shiny sign or not. I have wandered through a few times on my walk back from the tube station and often found it to remind me that there are people who still smile, that everything in this city is not sterile, that we are tolerant and accepting and embrace a wide variety of cultures. Not everything fits in a box people, and should your cosy little house prices decrease from the markets existance, I suggest that is a problem with society, not the marketplace.... however, I find this most difficult to believe!!!! In regards to someones argument about two girls fighting- Ive never seen anything of the sort - but I have walking down the high street at 2am on a Saturday observing some of the 'classiest' members of society doing some extremely 'un-classy' things. However, as these things often occur on a weekend, at amarket, in sainsbury's bla bla bla I wouldnt hold it against the bars or clubs OR the market

I guess it depends on who owns the land.  If the council don't (and I'm assuming that's the case), I don't think there's a lot they can do to speed up any redevelopment.  From what I've seen in the past, it can take quite a long time between planning permission being received, and things actually starting to happen.

There is currently a planning application being considered by the Council's Planning Officers. There is also an earlier one at appeal.

There is also a strong argument that development on this site should be together with the redevelopment or restoration of the building next to it Mary Secole House.

Dear GJ - was it a foggy day when u looked at the proposed development 4 the X Clapham Market ?

It is hideous - and unfortunatelly asimilar 2 the 1 opp. Pearl's chemists - so xxxxxn' reminiscent of photos I've seen of 4, eg. East Berlin in the 50's.

And - once again - they are residencial - but not for the likes of me and probably the majority of Cla'mites! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Altho I've only lived in Clapham 4 ap 20yrs - sure I've seen lots of Hi St changes - now - maybe it could be renamed Clapham Restaurant St - BUT - at least the businesses bring people into the area providing jobs and some vibrancy.

Incidentally, I have tried 2 conntact the developers <as per para 1 - no-one is ever available - strange?>

Best wiishes GJ - there are still a cpl. of opticians left in the Hi St.................................................
