Has anyone else noticed the Parakeets on Clapham Common? I first became aware of them around this time last year, but now find it is more likely to see or hear them than not when out on the Common.

It is actually easier to hear than to see them. They are very loud and make a noise like a wheelbarrow with a squeeky wheel being pushed very fast, amplified. They tend to stick to high tree branches and fly very quickly. They are bright green.

I've counted as many as twenty at a time. I found them fascinating to begin with, but now see them as the new 'grey squirrel'!

RE:Parakeets take over Clapham Common
(Date Posted:05/03/2008 2:19 AM)

Well I am now in Aus trying to shake off a nasty persistent infection and parakeets, cocateels and other big budgies are everywhere.

Have to say had not seen any of the above in Clapham but visiting a friend in Wimbledon found out that they are well established there.

It is a pity that such pretty birds have such a horrible call... but I guess God is not perfect after all. A picture of the noisy birds would be nice.

There is a fantastic Rainbow Lorikeet here that just sits in local trees and looks lovely. Now if we could get that on the Common!!!

All the best
Steve
