Topic :   We need more shops in clapham

Hi all i think we need more shops of a higher and better quality and which are affordable in the Clapham Area. Presntly there are too many bars in the area and nothing else for the community. Unless you're a drinker and young there's pretty much nothing else to do in Clapham.

Re :   ARGOS COMMING TO CLAPHAM HIGH ST.

I agree that more shops are needed as I fail to understand why only bars seem to open up in clapham and nothing else. even the few no bars opening are over priced like the bars so that only certain people with money can afford to eat in them. It would be nice to have a couple of affordable chain shops to improve shopping prosepcts

Re :   ARGOS COMMING TO CLAPHAM HIGH ST.

Uniqueness ? You obviously havent lived here very long. When I moved here over ten years there were shops.

Can't see what is unique about having a Sainsburys, next to a Tescos, next to a Sainsburys. (However did Sainsburys get away with that....)

Most of them gone, replaced by binge drinking establishments. The trendy shops are pretty much useless, if I want to buy something useless I'll go to Camden Market thanks.

As for the shops selling "tat", there are a life saver, there was a time a few years ago you could even buy a paint brush.

( There used to be a paint shop on the high street, owned by Leslie Ash's mum. He daughter turned it into another bar...)

The "independent" book shop is half the size if used to be, the previous owners went bust. I predict in 5 years it will turned into another bar.

The "deli" isn't up to much either. There are better in Balham.

I don't think an Argos would be a bad thing at all.

Re :   Aircraft Noise in Clapham

It's always been loud being right under the flight path.

As for it being quieter in the past, I'm afraid that's not true. Don't you remember Concorde going over ?

Re :   I'm moving to SW4 what are best parts?

Very uniformed post about the Clapham North area.

There are lovely streets that you wouldn't know were there unless you walked round.

Mayflower Road, Tregothnan Road to name but a few. Also a mention for Ferndale Road which has some lovely properties.

Although owned by a housing association some of the most beautiful properties in the whole of Clapham are on Atherfold Road.

There are both near the circle bar which (at the moment) is one of the friendliest bars in Clapham.

I lived on Tregothnan Road for over ten years and love the convenience. Ten minutes from Stockwell to avoid trying to get on the Northern Line in the morning, or 5 minutes from Clapham North when it calms down at the weekend.

If you fancy going to a gig - Brixton Academy is ten minutes through the lanes.

I'm actually moving to Balham (hopefully) because I'm a bit tired of Clapham being viewed by the council as simply a drinking venue and like Balham for the fact it has shops.

Having said that, I've loved Clapham and will probably move back here in the future and will always be back at the weekend to sit on the common.

Re :   Are you a Clapham resident fed up with noise, fights etc disturbing your slep every weekend?

Yep totally agree.

When I moved here it had SHOPS, remember those !

At least three proper greengrocers including the really good one on the High Street just round the corner from Clapham North.

I saw the signs coming years ago.

It's a real shame. You need a mix of businesses, not just something that resembles a rubbish Spanish resort.

When people ask me what Clapham High Street is like, I say it's somewhere where people come to be sick on a Friday Night.

I'm selling my flat and I'm off to Balham.

Re :   Are you a Clapham resident fed up with noise, fights etc disturbing your slep every weekend?

I have known clapham for over 13 years and lived here for over 7.  Things are a lot better that the rough old days when the place looked like a third world and there were bars up over the off licence on the high street! (like the wild west).  There have been a lot of improvements over recent years, but I am also a bit worried that we are reaching a "tipping point" where the big boozing Ibizia bars and crowds end up defining the neighbourhood.  I have noticed a lot of flats in the area changing from homes for people to rented out flats with a constant stream of "to let" signs, sofas and rubbish chucked out on the street, and no respect for where they live.  I want to live in an area where there is a good mix of people, where families and well as young people can enjoy life, but things seem to just moving towards a booze trash crowd who spend a couple of years here getting plastered and move on.  I think some kind of limit on the opening on new boozers might help, but also need the council doing some creative thinking to bring some "soul" back to the place.

Re :   Are you a Clapham resident fed up with noise, fights etc disturbing your slep every weekend?

I too an thoroughly fed up with Clapham High Street on Friday and Saturday nights, and try to avoid it as far as possible - a sad state fo affairs where you don't want to go out near where you live.  Let alone the mess that you see early the following mornings...
