Here's my comments to Lambeth Council regarding Revitalise Clapham:

I am very much interested in the outcomes of the revitalised scheme and the impact this will have on the community. I think overall it is positive, however many clapham residents will agree that apart from the area suffering from a lack of cultural and retail amenities, the high street and its environs in particular offer very one-dimensional services that cater mainly to students and young graduates in their 20s and early thirties. There are very few amenities and facilties to attract people aged over thirty-five, mothers with children and very young people to the high street area. It has an exclusive twenty-something feel with nearly all of the shops, pubs and bars between clapham north and clapham common catering exclusively to that age group. This is a shame for a prime Lambeth and London neighbourhood that promises much potential. It also means that because there is very little in this part of lambeth to attract families, the borough will continue to suffer from attracting a mainly transient dormitory population with people staying only for a short while and moving on. This isn't good for building the economy and social capital of the area. I think this issue needs to be addressed as part of the overall strategy for revitalise Clapham, otherwise it will be missing a crucial factor for the successful regeneration of the area.  Perhaps lessons can be learnt from neighbouring boroughs such as Wandsworth and Southwark who have successfully addressed this issue.

Clapham High Street will benefit immensely from having a healthy mix of age groups and amenities that cater for all age groups and sections of the population instead of being used as a staging point for students and young graduates performing their 'rights of passage' to other more deserving areas.
