Ghost Radio is a book that is as frightening as it is
enticing. With every turn of the
page I was launched deeper and deeper into the world of Joaquin, the
non-believing, believing host of Ghost Radio. His vividly written journey into the world of the paranormal
left me wondering, could there really be something out there? Just like Joaquin, I thought it was
just some ghost stories, but I became more and more entranced by the idea that
our world and the other world were coming together and that spirits or phantoms
or ghosts or whatever you call them might actually have found some way into our
world. The book continues to get
more and more twisted the more and more I read until my head was twisted up
right with the book. But, it’s
just a story, right? That kind of
stuff doesn’t really happen.
Despite how many times I told myself that, it still plagued my thoughts
for weeks after. And then I saw
this on CNN, and I had to ask myself, was I really listening? http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/living/2008/09/25/dnt.ghostly.images.on.tape.kshb

I loved Ghost Radio. It was perfectly scary and thrilling and the characters were well-drawn with interesting back stories that weaved them together. The book exists in this weird space between the American view of death as something fearful and finite and the Mexican view which is more fluid and natural. The book deals with the host of a radio show where callers share their otherworldly experiences. It serves as a common space for those who have dealt with the uncommon. It is cathartic - they are not alone, but not everyone is able to deal with their demons in the same way. Joaquin, the host of the show, has demons of his own, both literal and figurative. We follow him through about fifteen years, from his DIY punk origins to his corporate radio success. Joaquin never changes because the events of his life, each more horrible and inexplicable than the next make it clear that he is in some way destined to fall and will never escape from the haunting voices that torment him. The book is written in both first and third person narratives, with a few characters sharing the first person duties. In this way, we are not only able to see the confusing and very real events of Joaquin's life, but how from the perspective of those around him, it appears that he is descending into madness marked by hallucinations and fears. Is he stuck in an alternate reality or is he simply insane? The mystery of the tragedies that mark Joaquin's life are unraveled in the story and aided along by the ghostly encounters that are called into the radio show. This novel provides a fresh take on the horror genre by infusing it with nuanced, layered characters, punk music, sex and opposing cultural elements from the US and Mexico.

Ghost Radio was crack, I couldnt put it down. I agree with what everyone has said about it but I'm surprised no one looked into it more. After i had finished reading it i looked it up on Google and I found the home page. Lemme just say, as if I didnt love this book enough before, but after going to the website I saw all the movies about it and watched the short film I'm obsessed. They have tracks by the deathmuertoz as well, which, as your reading the book, you can put on and it totally sets the mood, especially when they listen to specific songs. This already very animated book has been made even more animated for me, truly coming off the page with this multimedia Ghost Radio experience. I applaud Leopoldo Gout on taking this step towards making it real and creating a universe in which we can experience so much of Ghost Radio, not just the book.
