Little overkill there on Isabella the She-Wolf's part, hmmm? Wonder just how pissed off Despenser made her & why?

Anyone ever read Penmarric by Susan Howatch? It's a novelization loosely based upon the reign of Edward II & in it she has Patrick (Edward) eventually become impotent with Sarah (Isabella) so invites the Despenser character (whose name escapes me) to join them for a menage a trois that involves a great deal of unpleasantness for Sarah's backside if you know what I mean Sarah later jokes with Maxwell Drummond (Roger Mortimer) that she wants the guy's cojones as a necklace for it.

I have to wonder exactly what Despenser did to Isabella (was it something along the fictional lines above?) to make her hate him THAT MUCH.

OMG FA!!!

I absolutfreakinlutely love Susan Howatch's 'family' novels. I read Penmarric several times before realizing that it was based on the characters of those Plantagenets. My favorite book(s) of hers is the two-parter "Wheel of Fortune" where she brilliantly takes on Edward III and his children. I've always wanted her to go on with into the Wars of the Roses with the characters in WOF, but she got religion & started writing her Church of England series. Those books are OK, but I love her family historical sagas. She is brilliant at using different narrators to bring out different versions of events. Penmarric, Wheel of Fortune, The Rich are Different & Sins of the Fathers (the last two are based on the Cesar/Cleopatra/Mark Anthony story) are on my permanent bookshelf and usually read once a year or so.

Carry on - back to A Plantagenety November.....

You know what, I got the title wrong....it's Cashelmara that does Edward II. Penmarric does Henry (Mark) & Eleanor (Janna) & Fair Rosamund (Rose) & bastard Geoffrey (Adrian) & Richard (Philip) & John (Jan-Yves). I wore out my paperbacks of them & then I was lucky enough to score them in vintage hardcover at a used book sale for a buck apiece, less than the paperbacks cost new in the 80s. I can't believe I screwed that up because Cashelmara is actually my fav of the lot, but I did read Penmarric 1st & I was all OMG this is about the revolting eaglets ROFL & then started looking for more by her. Pity she never made it into WOTR, that would've been fun. I also can't believe I can remember all their names save Despenser's. What the heck was his name? Something Scots is all I recall (too lazy to rummage for it). WAS it Hugh? That would be too funny if I were blocking on something that obvious.

Carrying on with Plantagenety November....Tomorrow the elder of the PITT was born in Sanctuary at Westminster....for a diva Elizabeth Woodville sure spent a whole lot of time cloistered, didn't she? Bet the religious folk weren't fond of her:

Fabulous headgear ROFL Can you imagine how much it hurt to pluck back that hairline? Ouch!

O & begatswise....Joan Beaufort, who demised this month, was not just Gaunt spawn but also the mum of the Rose of Raby & great-grandmamma of the PITT. I bet Cicely Neville was mighty ticked at having to cede place to La Diva Woodville up there when she should've been queen if Richard of York hadn't been such a dummy ROFL I think it's interesting that the Mother of All Yorkists was born a Lancastrian.

Can't believe I mixed up Cashelmara & Penmarric either, as I've never liked the Penmarric story near as much - it's the huge family saga of Cashelmara, the Irish potato famine & Sarah become a strong woman that fascinates me. Oh, and it was a Hugh in her story, Hugh MacGowan.

Thanks for posting that glam pix of EW. I know that plucking the hairline was stylin' back then, but I agree with the YEOWCH!! response. smiley4

Oh, and thanks for reminding me the begats of La Cis, I knew that she had Beaufort blood, but couldn't remember how far back. I'm reading through PG's latest, about EW in fact, and while some of it is shudderingly horrible, that thing about Cecily Neville's bloodline was nagging at me.

Yesterday Richard of York got to be the heir, ticking off MoA. Even after the depositions of RII & EII, was that divine right of kings still so strong that no one piped up & said, Henry sucks, have a crown, Dick? Maybe it's because Henry was merely incompetent & had no favorites to irk the rest of the nobles? They all had to have known Warwick was a prime candidate for royal favorite in the event Richard took the throne.

And what's even weirder is that Edward strolled into London not long after Pops was killed, said MINE, & they all said, OK. What was up with that? Esp considering Edward's age (18) & the backing of Warwick for it.

9 mos from this date, Edward II had sex with a woman PMSL as tis Edward IIIs BD today. Interesting that E2 was imprisoned on the same day as his firstborn son's christening, knowing the kid was to succeed him in his own lifetime & be manipulated by Mortimer. Wonder if E2 remembered the date as they locked him away & thunk, ungrateful lil bastard! LOL

LMFAO @ FAs "wow....go Team Mortimer". They REALLY wanted to make sure Despenser was good & dead, didn't they? Betcha it was quite the spectacle & peeps made lots of groats selling meat pies & ale to the spectators.

Ironic that Mortimer got his in the same week, 4 yrs later, hmmm? E3 must've really despised him to show his contempt by insisting on a commoner's death for a noble. And how would you like to be him having this conversation with Mummy about her BF? ROFL

I just saw something recently that said ever since Richard II was invested as Prince of Wales, it's been done. Do you think E3 was listening to how much the English folk seemed to despise Gaunt when he planned this event?

Does anyone know how long it took all those Eleanor Crosses to go up? There's only the one in Charing Cross left now, right?
