I am restoring a 1978 XL100 and am making pretty good progress.

Looking at my speedometer, Single round unit, the inside face for some reason has mud or dirt on it. The outside is fine.

I want to pull it apart to clean the inside face.

Has anyone pulled one of these units apart?

It looks like the back and front are glued together, how do you separate these?

 Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dorkpunch had some experience with this:

Also, here is a general article about it .. you won't have the crimp ring to deal with:

Thanks XLinSAV, great article.

The XL100 Speedometer looks like it is glued (?) together at the back and as you mention does not have a crimped ring(wish it did) to remove and have the Speedometer open up.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to separate the housing from the black plastic backing plate, guess you would have to work a knife(just guessing hear) between the back plate holding the speedo gear and gauge light bulbs and the outer housing, trying to break the glue bond. Hate to crack the outer housing in this attempt.

once the bond is broken, pull apart, clean the inside of the lens, lubricate and reepoxy together.

Any tips, tricks or advise is welcome.

Thanks

I picked up a spare speedo/tach set from e-bay from a '75 XL175 a while back to experiment with .. same as on the 250/350, just a different red-line.  I got the back loose using a jewelers screw driver.  I also considered a X-acto knife but I value my fingers.  I got to the point that I needed to get the trip-meter reset off but the screw in the bottom is rusted in and I haven't gotten back to it.  I think applying a little heat with a heat gun or hair dryer would make the plastic a little more pliable and help prevent cracking the case.
