Buckeyes and horse chests are not considered true chestnuts although the resemblence is somewhat close. Buckeyes or horse chestnuts are not suggested for human consumption. And are listed as poisonous plants of the United States and Canada. Even if they were considered edible, the nut is quite bitter and would need considerable leaching before they would be considered palatable. However, It is true that at one time the Indians roasted, peeled and mashed the nuts, then leached them in running water for several days prior to using them. It was reported that in 1860 "The powdered seeds and bruised branches, if thrown into a small pond and stirred, would intoxicate the fish which would then rise to the surface and could be taken by hand". This would be impossible in any body of moving water as the water refreshes itself continuously. However in a small pond it would be feasible. As far as oxygen depletion in the water, I cannot say.
