In Canada there is a climbing vine with large leaves that in appearance resemble a grape leaf. The fruit even has the appearace of grapes, but they are black in color. what are they andare they safe to eat?..

I believe the plant that is in question is called ' Canadian Moonseed' The fruit and leaves have the appearnce of a grape vine . The fruit it dark purplish black in color. The fruit ripens between September and October. About the same time as a normal grape. Beware...The fruit of Canada moonseed are poisonous and can be fatal. While foraging for wild grapes one should examine the seeds of the fruit closely to make sure one is not eating moonseeds: moonseeds are crescent, in shape, while grapes have circular seeds. Differences in taste should also be an indicator of whether or not a specimen is grape or moonseed. If in question DO NOT eat the fruit....
