Has anyone tried this product, any results? Sounds like a good product. I'm constantly cleaning out the water trough because of algea growth. In Southern Nevada water is something we have to be very conservative with. Her trough is fitted with a floater so it stays full but it algae is a common problem.

I have never used Krystal Trough...
Only worry about algae here in the late spring thru early fall....I do know several people that use fish in their tanks for algae control.....One thing I have used that works is apple cider vinegar(to at least keep the algae at bay)....a cup per 25 gallons once your horse is used to the taste...An old cowboy I know swears by it and says not only does it reduce algae in tanks due to the pH change but it also helps with flies and if you are ever away from home and your horse is not liking the different water, all you have to do is add a bit of apple cider vinegar to the water and they will have no problem drinking it...I thought this was a cool tip considering it's natural and cheap!

Shelley,

Sorry if forgot to get back to this. I needed to check the name of the product when I went to the barn and forgot to post.

I use a product called Biogard in my stock tanks and it is WONDERFUL! I highly recommend it! It is a very safe enzyme and beneficial bacteria that works on organics in the water to keep it fresh, clean, clear and odor free. It comes in teabag type packets that will treat 500 gal a day for a month. You buy a starter pack first because you need the cup size reuseable weighted dispenser to put the packet in so that it drops to the bottom of the tank.

I have a power washer that I deep clean the tanks with to get the crud off of the inside of the tank. You should start with a clean tank and then add the Biogard and my water stays clear and palatable and they drink more. We have lots of rust in our water so it get nasty quickly in the summer and causes the tanks to scum up fast and grow algae. Also, in the summer I keep the water level so that I can add more cold water on hot days to keep it cool. When the water is too warm horses don't consume as much. Bo coliced once in hot weather, prior to using this product. It was very hot and very humid and tank cleaning was on the days agenda, but we were a day late evidently because when we went to power wash the tank we found Bo very sick, and I believe that he had not been drinking enough that day, as the water was not fresh. It may have also just been that he was sick because he had a fever and was weak. He had eaten well in the morning but I think that he just didn't want the tepid stale water. If he was sick that would have made it worse. That cost me $400.00

I can assure you that will never happen again! Fresh clean cool water first and foremost!

http://www.bioverse.com/tank.htm I see that DrsFosterSmith a veterinary supply company also recommend and sell it. Google stock tank cleaners and there are a number of products and companies.
