I hope to be there to adopt my first mustang. Right now it's looking like I won't arrive until late Friday night due to starting a new job, so I could use any help picking out a mare from those with more viewing time.
I'm also looking into driving routes as there may be snow and I have a sedan. I will be coming up from Sacramento probably via 395, but am worried about a possible need for chains.
And I will most likely need a hauler. Anyone have one to recommend or coming near Sac?
I know, a lot of obstacles, but well worth it!!!

Out doors and cold cold.
This will be the time to decide where to put your loyalties to a registers .
4 of the 6 will be onsite. Each with differnt reason and beliefs what a kiger is and where it will go.
Maybe each one can post here what they stand for.;
SMKR for one thing will not register any horse that has been regsiterd in the KMA since November of 2006. Only horse that trac back to the kiger Riddel herd . For you that have something to say about this it is as Josh and Ron seen it as well as me.
All come and have a good time and see some great horses.

Rick, many good things have been said about you and the way you conduct your registry. It is a hard to understand how any one can support a person that will ostracize a horse that has a connection to another registry. I thought your only concern was for the Kiger horse as a breed. I cannot believe any horse person can or could condemn an animal only because of who owned it or because of a piece of paper that says it is registered as anything other than SMKR. Since it is your registry I know you have every right to make the rules that suit you. What about the horse and the many people who have supported you and the horse over these many years? It does not give me the idea that you are supporting and/or promoting the breed if you refuse to register a Kiger when and if it meets the qualifications you have stated that makes it a Kiger. If it comes from Kiger or Riddle it is not worthy to be in SMKR because "in your own words a piece of paper stands in the way". I do not interpet this as supporting the horse, only as someone working to achieve their own personal agenda with bias.
If a loyal supporter of SMKR were to buy a Kiger, that came from Kiger or Riddle, that had been registered with the KMA will you change the rules or would you just say it is not a Kiger. This situation would not seem reasonable in any way. How can anyone justify this situtation!

Larry who ever you are you have some good points about me hurting the breed by doing this. Horses that were in the kma up to a point are ok with both but after that no. What I am trying to do is get people to understand that over 300 horses in kma are totaly wrong and will on keep muiltply at a great rate. For those that want to be part of that they can but not part of me and anything we do. I am hopeing over the next many many yerars new comers will understand what makes a kiger and go what ever way they wish. As for hurting a horse so what if it is a fake a real one stands on its own.

Air travel... Boise is 160 miles east; Bend/Redmond is the same to the west. Lodging is plentiful, as are the stars in the sky, but you won't see many of them on the local restarants. The locals are good people for the most part!
The adoption goings on are for the most part outdoors, with the horse viewing at the Burns Corrals west of town, and everything else at the fairgrounds (to the best of my knowledge). Some stuff indoors at the fair grounds. Parking is good at both venues, for most any sizew vehicles. Same at motels.
Most roads to Burns are basic 2 lane highways. Watch for livestock and wildlife which includes anything from kangaroo rats to elk, sheep to buffalo. Oregon is a free range state, which means if you kill a ranchers stock, you buy it, and he eats it! And you fix your own car! And if your going down the road and notice what looks like fresh cow manure on the pavement, slow down, cause you just might be approaching a herd of cattle on the highway. Keep in mind they only go 3 miles an hour, so just slowly and casually drive through. Excitement is driving through a hundred head with 6 ton of hay on your open trailor!
Weather may be very nice, shirt sleeve stuff, or as Rick says COLD! We have already had snow at higher elevations, and temps in the low 20's in the valley. From a driving perspective, be prepared for the worst. Keep you fuel tank filled. We do have AAA, but they can't help you if you can't reach them on your cell phone. And in most of the area, you can't!
Most roads are 2 lane, and have a lot of turns. Wild life and livestock are plentiful, with kangaroo rats to elk, sheep to 2600# bulls. It's an open range state, which means if you kill a ranchers stock, you pay for it, he eats it, and you fix your own car! Oregon speed limit is 55, but most go well over that. Just don't drive stupid!
Suzy... watch the Kiger web sites for pictures of the horses as they are brought into the corrals. Last time it helped, but you really do need to be there for a good look. I think they are going to do a sale catalog again. Watch for it and download it. Study that and it can save you some time. With that being said, I would really urge you to try and get here no later than Friday morning. It sounds like there will be 150 - 200 horses available. And that's a lot to look at. I don't know the exact time the actual auctioning of the horses start, but I think in '03 it was around 10:00 AM on Saturday. We came in on Thursday midday, and had no extra time.
Hope this helps. If anyone has any other questions, ask, and someone will answer, or you can call the BLM in Burns. ...Tom

Larry Scott asks : Why hurt the breed if you know you are doing this?
I suggest to everone to register with the SMKR first, then with the KMA if you would like to have a double registered Kiger.

Thanks Larry for that. I have tried to stop KMA from about 1993 putting bunches of outside horses in the breed and lost the battle big time. Why well maybe I was not very diplomatic in my approach or maybe greed for money by them was way to strong to over come. Anyway I lost as anybody can see by their stud book. Looking at Dream Horse site yesteday I see a 1/2 kiger 1/2 Suphuer asking $4000 but kma calling it a full kigre and this morning somebody tolled me about a horse full kiger from the Navada BLM kiger herd for sale. So it will never end with kma or the public greed so that is why I took the steep to end it at least for myself and otheres that are fed up with it. I do see your point that I hurt the breed some times but I have been since the fall of 1987 and about 700 horses invested with this breed and have met the best and worst people.

Thanks Tom! Unfortunately, I don't think i will be able to get out to view until Saturday morning. But I saw a flier on BLM site stating the auction begins at 12:00 and state 140 horses will be available. I'll just have to get there really early!
Anyone have any hauler recommendations from Burns to Sacramento?

Ok it seems my daughter really wants to go to see the horses, we can not adopt. But she promises to hold my arms down so I do not bid because well auctions are my weakness. We are thinking of coming if nothing else to meet and greet folks and see wome wonderful wild Kigers and take photos. We are not sure yet what day, possibly Friday or Early saturday morning. So i mught get to meet some other Kiger lovers out there and that would be nice.

Maybe we should all form a group of "enablers-anonymous" and all pledge to hold each other's arms down....I'm saying the same thing about not bidding to a bunch of girls I"m going with! Maybe we should all just focus on helping Suzy and vicariously live thru her....What do you think??? Suzy, would that be ok with you???

Thanks for the restaurant recommendations -- sounds like we'll be at the Meat Hook on Friday evening. I'm really looking forward to meeting some other Kiger owners. I've never been to an auction before and I'm a little nervous about driving 14 hours to buy an unknown horse of unknown price. I just hope we'll be able to load up first thing Sunday morning because we have a long drive ahead of us. If we load up on Saturday, we'll have to drive overnight and I would prefer not to do that. It will be an adventure...

Joanna,
BLM will gladly ablige you on loading Sunday. Saturday is a mad house so if you request a Sunday loading they will be happy. If any of you are interested KMA will be eating at the Casino and having a general membership meeting.
KMA Fall meeting Nov 9th from 5 PM there will be a conference room available for all meetings at the Old Camp Casino in Burns Oregon. The KMA board will meet there at 7 PM.
Our Fall meeting is Saturday Evening Nov 10th at 7 PM starting with dinner at the Old Camp Casino. The dinner is chicken and steak for 14.95 plus 18% gratuity. So 17.64. It is a steak and chicken buffet with salads, bread, vegetables and cheescake for dessert. As you walk in you are handed a $20 match play coupon for the casino. I need to receive your reservation before I leave for Burns. I may be able to take some late reservation in Burns. Come to the KMA booth to check. Guests will be welcome. I'd love the help!!! I'm assuming the corrals will be open Sat morning before the auction.
My ideal will be a dun (possibly grulla) young mare 3-4 years old. Good sloping shoulder, good bone width, and big engine behind. My plan is to use her for endurance for a bit and then breeding both Kigers and Arab/Kiger crosses, again for endurance. Not too small, but not tall either. I'm 5 foot. I want a good reaching stride if movement can be seen. I would prefer an alpha type, but not meanly so. One who seems currious, interested in what is going on, willing to make eye contact, not terrified or hiding nervously in the back. Oh, and a lovely long thick mane & tail and minimal white would be the icing on the cake. Am I asking for too much? ?nbsp; Any suggestions?
Still needing hauler info too. I will be calling Burns BLM for any they recommend.

Oooops! Forgot the MeatHook! It is good. A little on the pricey side, but not overpriced, and very well worth it! All locally grown beef! ...T
At the "03 adoption, we spent a lot of time viewing the horses, and selected several that we liked. We put them in order according to what we wanted, and then compared that to the order they would be auctioned. It is possible the top 2 or 3 horses you like all come up after all your "second" choices. If you pass on the second choices, you may be in a situation where your first choices all go for high prices.
We selected two horses that met our first priority. The first one that came up (my wifes first choice) just happened to be the filly everyone was ooohing and aaahing in the pens. When bidding started I asked my wife if she really wanted her, and she said yes. I made one bid (quite high), after other bidders had dropped out, and and let her go. When the second horse came up, there were fewer bidders, and they were not as aggressive. I bought her for about 1/2 of what I bid on the first horse, and I've always felt we got the better horse.
We set near a young lady who had picked several fillies, but had a limited budget. She was out bid on 3 or 4, and was quite frustrated (tears and all!) by the prices that were being paid. When a really nice filly came up that was near the last on her list, she cautiously bid, and ended up buying the horse. A very happy new Kiger owner!!!
I think it's important to know what you want, and what you will accept, with perhaps alternatives. Also consider if you would accept a nice but lesser horse than your first choice if it could be bought for under your budget, and under the going rates. I think that those who have been to auctions and bought previously will have there own way of doing things that works for them. I hope this helps those who are coming to Burns for the first time.
I have been to the corrals, and spent some time looking over the horses. There's some nice ones out there. Some of the old timers will tell you that the horses we have today are better than those originally offered, primarily because in the past the best horses were always put back out on the range. Hopefully everyone will find one to take home! ...T

Are there any website's where you can see the corral's, pic's of the one's gathered? I may be mistaken and thinking of something else, but is there going to be an online auction for some of the one's gathered?
From the one's on here that have adopted one from the adoption, what did you do when you got them home, as far as getting them calm and trusting to you? Was it hard? Sorry for all the questions, I've just never adopted one from he WILD and don't know anyone that has around here, and would be very interested in hearing your stories on training and how the horse's handled the change.

Angel... There was a printed catalog and online pdf version in '03. I was told it was going to be done this time as well, but havn't seen anything yet. Maybe not time yet. Andi, who is caring for the orphan colt, has done photo's in the past, but I don't know if she will have time this year. I don't have a camera that will do well enough to try, plus the time thing. I will try to find out more on photo's.
Tiffany, two suggestions. Don't do an adoption application! (But you can do one there if you really find one you can't live without - pretend I didn't say this!)
Some pretty good training tips can be found at: http://www.kbrhorse.net/pag/train.html Read everything you can, books. articles, all of it! Tapes and DVDs too! Then apply common sense. Take the time to get to know your horse, and to for him to know you. Learn every movement he makes, because what you do will be based on what he does. And watch his eyes. I think it's better than if they spoke to you. They will relate much to you. Most of all, be the herd leader. They will be looking to you for leadership and guidance. If you don't provide it, they will try to assume the role, then you have a problem. But they really do want you to lead them. ...Tom

Thanks Tom! Some great advice and I'll get on that website and do some reading.
I just read that there will be 20 or more for sale on the internet later in the month after the adoption. To all of you that are going, please take some pic's, I would love for you to share them with all of us that aren't going to be able to make it, and for all of you that are lucky and able to adopt one, please share those photo's and there progress!!! I can't wait to hear all of your stories.
