Hi guys and gals.

I have a quick question for all of you. Generally, how  long does it take for a Kiger Mustang to mature to their full height? My mare's almost 5 and standing at 14.0hh. Her sire was 14.1hh I believe, and her dam was 15.1hh or 15.2hh. hoping she'll grow a little more, but if not it's all right.

What gorgeous snow pictures!

What about mental maturity, especially in mares?  I have read that they are slower to mature than the boys.

Is it the slower development mentally as well as physically that makes it wise to be patient and not ask too much too soon of Kigers?

Linda, good question, mav  is my  1st kiger and  1st mustang  so Im still learning all this also. I have asked the same questions about Maverick. He's 5 this year and still has a lot of maturing to do mentally and physically.  So maybe some of the veteran kiger owners could answer this for us....

RE:Question!

I had Smoke grow an inch between 6 and 7, but that was because he finally started gaining weight as well.   It seems to me that boys grow longer than the girls but that may be because the girls get bred at three or four.   What really makes a huge difference is if they are nursed though the winter instead of being weaned.   I let the dams wean their foals.   So the nutrition their dam gets while pregnant and the foal gets the first year is really key.   Sedona was very small when I got her at age three, my yearlings were as big.   She grew a tiny bit in the next year but not much even though she got tons of food and got pudgy.

I think mental maturity is an individual thing.   Bravo was ready for light saddle work at 2+, then took a break for a year before more work.   Mares are different than the boys.   More herd oriented I think.   Trick is to become their best friend.   My boys have been more social at an earlier age, have taken discipline more easily without holding a grudge, have not been as reactive to pressure and generally faster to train.   But because they were going to be possible   studs I think I focused on them more as well.   The girls have been more possessive and jealous, that best girl friend thing.   They have been very tied to their dams and more of an "I don't have to work for a living" attitude.   Every horse is born with a built-in personality that is unique though and someone else may have had different experience.

Hi guys. Thanks for your compliments. People on a horse forum have been telling me that she's probably done growing, but I'll have more faith in you guys since you actually have Kiger experience. She's my first Kiger Mustang-- friendliest horse ever! I got her from a girl in Albany who got her from a breeder in Cave Junction, OR. She's rump high ATM and i'm hoping she'll grow into it, if even a little bit. I'd also love to see her grow a few more inches, but i'm not gonna get my hopes up. Thanks so much guys!

wow I learnd allot from reading all these posts. I was under the impression that Stormy was done growing since she is 5 and the next year she will fill out, am glad to know she can grow for a few more years. Her hind quartes are taller then the front right now which is giving her a sway back look.
Your lady is also so pretty I love the color. she resembles Stormy allot.

Yeah, people told me April probably wont get any bigger since she's already almost 5 . She's pretty rump high right now and does have that sway-back look to her sometimes. Can I see pictures of everyone's Kigers?

This is April Desert Rose? Is this Morgan? Did you find a trainer? I had contacted you in March of last year. But you didn't want to sell, just find a trainer. She looks great. I just found your email: you wrote: "never seen a calmer, prettier, or more affectionate horse!"
